Korean midfielder happy to draw attention from opponents

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — After being named the Player of the Match in a 2-1 victory over Czechia last week by recording a goal and an assist, Korean midfielder Hwang In-beom is expected to draw plenty of attention from Mexico in their upcoming match. And it suits Hwang just fine. "I hope they pay a lot of attention to me," Hwang said Wednesday at the prematch press conference at Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan, western Mexico, the site of the Group A match showdown between the two countries at 7 p.m. Thursday (local time), or 10 a.m. Friday (Korean time). "We have many players that are better than I am, and they will end up getting opportunities if the focus is on me," Hwang added. "I have faith that our attackers will capitalize on their chances. The important thing for us is to execute our plans to the best of our abilities." Korea went down in the second half against Czechia before Hwang netted the equalizer and then set up the go-ahead goal. But Hwang said he isn't content with just winning the first match. "I tried to forget about the first win as quickly as possible and instead focus on t

Why Rio Olympics can be a huge success

The Olympic rings are placed at Madureira Park ahead of the Rio 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Sunday. / Reuters-YonhapBy Valter JuniorThere always have been concerns about mega-events during their build-up phases. The press points its fingers to every single problem. It has been this way and will keep going like that. Being an emergent country maybe put bigger on pressure Brazil than on other countries. But in the last decades, each of the cities that hosted a World Cup or an Olympics suppressed their problems and held pretty good events _ the Munich Olympics in 1972 was the only exception, when  the Palestinian terrorist group Black September killed 11 on the Israeli Olympic team. Time erases issues. Who remembers of the terrorist attack during Atlanta 1996? Everybody has in mind the great stories but few can recall the tragedies. So, Rio de Janeiro has a great chance to host one of the best Olympics ever. The world is not used to the Brazilian way of doing things _ everything is ready just by the end of the day _ but in the end, most of the time, there is a happ

Southeast Asia, another destination for K-Leaguers

Pohang Steelers’ former striker Kim Seung-dae celebrates after scoring against the Thai club Buriram United during the 2014 AFC Champions League group game in this March 11, 2014 file photo. / YonhapBy John DuerdenThe great thing about football being popular around the world is that there are opportunities around the world for Korea’s players. The country has been to more World Cups than any other nation in Asia and more than any on the planet except 16 countries.Around Asia especially, the Land of the Morning Calm is very well-regarded and this helps to ensure that doors are often kept open. There have long been Koreans in Japan and in recent years they have been heading in increasing numbers to leagues in China and the Middle East such as Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. This is not always welcomed in Korea. There are no problems with players going to Europe but it is sometimes felt that players moving elsewhere in Asia are moving to inferior leagues than the K-League. If so, there are questions to be raised about their continuing professional devel

Amid Zika scare, Korea sends largest medical team to Rio

South Korea will be sending its largest medical team to a multisport competition at this year's Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics, hoping to keep its athletes healthy amid the Zika virus scare, pollution problems and security challenges. The Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) said Friday it has put together a medical team of nine doctors, physical therapists and nurses. They're joined by a pair of infectious disease specialists from the National Medical Center. The KOC will also bring on board a Korean doctor based in Brazil to ensure coordination with local medical authorities. With the first Olympics in South America under a month away, Rio has lost much star power in men's golf, as the world's top-four players have pulled out citing fears over the mosquito-borne Zika virus, linked to birth defects, and other health-related concerns.Guanabara Bay, the site of the Olympic sailing competition, is badly polluted, and sailors in practice last week complained that an oil slick turned their white boats brown. Then there is the issue of rising violence.
