KBO clubs shutting down key pitchers as All-Star break nears

With the end of the first half in the Korean baseball season around the corner, clubs have decided to give their ailing pitchers extra rest starting this week. The LG Twins, tops in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with a record of 50-30-0 (wins-losses-ties), will keep left-hander Song Seung-ki on the injured list for an additional two weeks. Manager Youm Kyoung-youb said Thursday that Song, who had been expected to return from back spasms next Tuesday, will instead take the mound after the July 10-15 All-Star break. Song led all rookies last year with 11 wins and a 3.50 ERA. He was also selected for the Korean national team at the World Baseball Classic, and posted an excellent 1.42 ERA across his first five starts of this season. Things took a sudden turn for the worse for Song in May, though. He endured a stretch in which he allowed 18 earned runs in just 16 2/3 innings, as his ERA jumped to 4.71. Song tossed 5 1/3 shutout innings on May 30 but then was roughed up for six runs on nine hits, including two home runs, in two innings on June 7. He hit the sidelines the next day, with

Son Heung-min to visit Tottenham next Tuesday for 1st time since departure

Former Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min will visit the North London club next week for the first time since leaving them for Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) in the summer. Tottenham announced on their website Wednesday (local time) that Son will return to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to bid farewell to home fans before the club's UEFA Champions League match against SK Slavia Praha next Tuesday. Son played his final match in a Spurs shirt in an exhibition against Newcastle United at Seoul World Cup Stadium on Aug. 3. He then traveled straight to Los Angeles to join the Major League Soccer club. Son spent 10 years with Spurs after arriving from the German side Bayer Leverkusen in 2015. He won the Premier League Golden Boot as the top goal scorer in the 2021-2022 season with 23 goals and captained Tottenham to the UEFA Europa League title in May this year for their first trophy in 17 years. Jeju SK hold off Suwon Samsung to begin K League promotion playoffs

Jeju SK FC took a big step toward avoiding relegation to the second division in Korean football Wednesday, as they won the first leg of their key playoff series on the road. Yuri Jonathan's 67th-minute penalty stood as the winner as Jeju SK defeated Suwon Samsung Bluewings 1-0 to open their K League promotion-relegation playoffs at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, some 30 kilometers south of Seoul. The return leg of this home-and-away series will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Jeju World Cup Stadium in Seogwipo on the southern island of Jeju. Jeju SK ended up in these playoffs after finishing in 11th place in the top-flight K League 1. They must win this series to stay in the top division and avoid falling into the K League 2 for the first time since 2020. Suwon Samsung, four-time K League 1 champions with several other major trophies, were relegated to the K League 2 after the 2023 season. This year, they qualified for the promotion-relegation playoffs by finishing in second place in the K League 2 but now find themselves in a 1-0 hole heading into the away leg Sunday. There will be no away goals

Veteran pitchers to join nat'l team training camp for World Baseball Classic

Two seasoned veteran pitchers have made the Korean national baseball team's training camp roster ahead of next year's World Baseball Classic (WBC). The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) unveiled the 29-man training roster Wednesday, with manager Ryu Ji-hyun set to run camp in Saipan in the western Pacific Ocean from Jan. 9 to 21. Ryu Hyun-jin, the 38-year-old starter for the Hanwha Eagles, and Noh Kyung-eun, the 41-year-old reliever for the SSG Landers, are among 16 pitchers. The camp will also feature 13 position players, including KT Wiz outfielder Ahn Hyun-min, the 2025 Rookie of the Year, and Kia Tigers infielder Kim Do-yeong, the 2024 KBO MVP. After Korea played four exhibition games last month, two each against the Czech Republic and Japan, with a youthful squad, manager Ryu spoke about needing some veteran presence on the pitching staff. Ryu Hyun-jin, a former major league All-Star, went 9-7 with a 3.23 ERA this year, ranking ninth in ERA among pitchers who threw at least 120 innings. Ryu represented Korea at the 2006 Asian Games, the 2008 Summer Olympics, the 2009 WBC and the 201

Ex-KBO club GM banned for life over bribery allegations

Former Kia Tigers general manager Jang Jun-suk was slapped with a lifetime ban by the league Wednesday over bribery allegations, despite being acquitted of those charges last year. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) imposed the penalty on Jang following its disciplinary committee meeting on Monday. Along with Jang, former Tigers skipper Kim Jong-kook received a 50-game ban and was ordered to 80 hours of community service over his own bribery charges. Jang and Kim were both accused of receiving 100 million won ($68,100) from the CEO of a food company in October 2022 in exchange for helping the business sign a sponsorship deal with the Tigers. Kim faced separated charges of receiving 60 million won in exchange for putting the company's logo on the Tigers' uniform. In October 2024, the Seoul Central District Court found both not guilty, saying the company did not receive any favor from the Tigers and ended up paying more for its advertising than it normally would have. The court added it found no evidence of any preferential treatment offered by the ball club to the company. However, the

Coach Hong Myung-bo heads to Washington for World Cup draw

It’s that time again — the draw for the World Cup takes place Saturday morning, Seoul time. When fans wake up, Korea’s three group opponents will be known, the excitement will move up a level, and the planning can really start. For the 11th time in a row, Korea is involved. It really is a remarkable streak. The last time it didn’t happen was way back in 1982. You have to be in your 50s to remember a World Cup without the Taeguk Warriors. You don’t have to be quite so old to remember the last time the tournament took place in the United States. That was 1994, when Korea finished third in Group C behind Germany and Spain. Hong Myung-bo scored in both of those games, and he now returns to the U.S. as Korea’s head coach. There is some optimism. The tournament has been expanded from 32 teams to 48. Whatever the rights and wrongs of that decision, it not only takes the pressure off during qualification, with Asia sending eight teams instead of four, it also makes getting to the knockout stages easier. The top two from each of the 12 groups of four will advance to the second round,

Dean is coming back for his fourth season in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) at up to $1.7 million, with $1.1 million in salary, $300,000 in signing bonus and $300,000 in incentives. Chirinos, the Twins' Opening Day starter in 2025, is returning for his second KBO season at up to $1.4 million, with $900,000 in salary, $300,000 in signing bonus and $200,000 in incentives. Tolhurst, who joined the Twins in August and was the winning pitcher in the deciding Game 5 of the Korean Series against the Hanwha Eagles, agreed to a $1.2 million contract, with $800,000 in salary, $200,000 in signing bonus and $200,000 in incentives. Dean has been one of the most productive first basemen in the KBO since arriving in Korea in 2023. In 395 career games, Dean has 86 home runs, 322 RBIs and a .315/.384/.560. During the 2023-20

KBO MVP Ponce signs with Blue Jays; ex-Eagles teammate Weiss joins Astros

Cody Ponce, the Korean baseball MVP in 2025, has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays. Team sources told Yonhap News Agency on Wednesday that Ponce is joining the Blue Jays, confirming earlier reports out of Toronto and the United States stating that the right-hander had agreed to a three-year deal worth $30 million. Ponce was named the MVP of the 2025 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season last month after winning the Triple Crown with 17 wins, a 1.89 ERA and a league-record 252 strikeouts in 180 2/3 innings for the Hanwha Eagles. Ponce has 20 major league games under his belt, all of them with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2020 and 2021. Before joining the Eagles for the 2025 season, Ponce had pitched in Japan for three seasons. The 31-year-old now joins the reigning American League (AL) pennant winners whose rotation will be fronted by the incumbent ace Kevin Gausman, former Cy Young Award winner Shane Bieber, and a big offseason signing Dylan Cease, the 2022 AL Cy Young runner-up with five straight 200-strikeout seasons. The Blue Jays also have a rising young star in Trey Yesavage, who thr

Courtney Sarault of Canada led the way with five gold medals and 980 points. "Throughout the World Tour season, I felt the Canadian skaters had improved a great deal," Choi told reporters at Incheon International Airport, just west of Seoul. "Skaters from other countries have also made strides, but I also came away convinced I can still get good results (at the Olympics) with good preparation."
