KBO clubs shutting down key pitchers as All-Star break nears

With the end of the first half in the Korean baseball season around the corner, clubs have decided to give their ailing pitchers extra rest starting this week. The LG Twins, tops in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with a record of 50-30-0 (wins-losses-ties), will keep left-hander Song Seung-ki on the injured list for an additional two weeks. Manager Youm Kyoung-youb said Thursday that Song, who had been expected to return from back spasms next Tuesday, will instead take the mound after the July 10-15 All-Star break. Song led all rookies last year with 11 wins and a 3.50 ERA. He was also selected for the Korean national team at the World Baseball Classic, and posted an excellent 1.42 ERA across his first five starts of this season. Things took a sudden turn for the worse for Song in May, though. He endured a stretch in which he allowed 18 earned runs in just 16 2/3 innings, as his ERA jumped to 4.71. Song tossed 5 1/3 shutout innings on May 30 but then was roughed up for six runs on nine hits, including two home runs, in two innings on June 7. He hit the sidelines the next day, with

Global anti-doping conference closes in Busan with new code, declaration on stronger cooperation

BUSAN — The sixth edition of the World Conference on Doping in Sport wrapped up Friday in the southeastern city of Busan, as the next edition of the global anti-doping code was finalized. The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) held its biggest international gathering in Asia for the first time this week, after holding the conference in Switzerland, Denmark, Spain, South Africa and Poland. On the final day of the meeting, WADA's Foundation Board approved the new World Anti-Doping Code and its Executive Committee approved the accompanying International Standards. These documents will take effect Jan. 1, 2027, and will be in force until 2033. "The revised Code and Standards prioritize the human rights of athletes, especially minors and other protected persons. They also increase the responsibilities of the entourage and of anti-doping organizations," WADA President Witold Banka said. "In other areas, the rules are also becoming more flexible to ensure they can be applied in a way that is both strong and fair. The Code was never meant to stand still. This is the fourth such revision, and it wi

Posted KBO star Song Sung-mun not pushing for contract provision to refuse minor league assignment

While awaiting offers from Major League Baseball (MLB) clubs this winter, South Korean infielder Song Sung-mun said Friday he will not pursue a provision in his contract that allows him to refuse an assignment to the minor leagues. Song addressed the issue after receiving the Player of the Year award from the Korea Professional Baseball Players Alumni Association at an annual ceremony in Seoul. Song, an All-Star third baseman for the Kiwoom Heroes, was posted for MLB teams last month, giving all 30 big league clubs an opportunity to negotiate with him during a 30-day period. That window will close at 5 p.m. Eastern time on Dec. 21. "There's a team that I'd like to join, but it's more important to see what kind of offer I get from a team that wants me," Song said. "I will wait patiently until I get offers. I guess I will have to wait until the Winter Meetings (which start Sunday in Orlando, Florida), and the next 10 days will be crucial." Song batted .315/.387/.530 with 26 home runs, 25 steals and 90 RBIs this year, while ranking second among all Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) players

FC Seoul parting ways with ex-Man United star Jesse Lingard

FC Seoul announced Friday they will part ways with captain Jesse Lingard after the English star's two seasons in Korea. FC Seoul said they sought to exercise their option for Lingard's third year in the K League 1, but the 32-year-old midfielder, even though he enjoyed his time with FC Seoul, wanted to take his talent to a different league at this stage in his career. "We had in-depth talks with Lingard, trying to persuade him to stay with us for a little longer, but in the end, we decided to grant him his wish," FC Seoul said. "Over the past two seasons, he was more than just another foreign player, serving as our captain and showing great commitment to the club. We'd like to thank him for his contributions as a player who embodied FC Seoul, and we'd like to express our deepest admiration." Lingard, former Manchester United star and England international, became the biggest name to arrive in the top Korean league when he signed a shock deal with FC Seoul in February 2024. He netted six goals and had three assists in 26 matches last year, and put up 10 goals and four assists in 34 match

Ex-KBO MVP Kim Jae-hwan signs with Landers after release from Bears

Former South Korean baseball MVP Kim Jae-hwan has found a new home after being released by his former team last month. The SSG Landers announced Friday they have signed Kim, 37, to a two-year contract worth up to 2.2 billion won ($1.5 million) — with 1 billion won in total salary, 600 million won in signing bonus and another 600 million up for grabs in incentives. By signing with the Landers, Kim is returning to the western city of Incheon where he played middle school and high school baseball. Kim, the 2018 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular-season MVP, was released by the Doosan Bears on Nov. 26. His four-year contract with them expired after the 2025 season, but instead of exercising his rights as a free agent, Kim chose to first negotiate a new contract with the Bears. When the two sides couldn't come to an agreement, a clause kicked in that allowed for an unconditional release for Kim. Teams that sign free agents must offer compensation for those players' former teams, either with a combination of cash and a player or with cash alone. However, because Kim was unconditionally

Eyes of football world fixed on 2026 World Cup draw with Trump presiding

WASHINGTON — The draw for the 2026 World Cup takes place in Washington on Friday, with Donald Trump set to play a prominent part in a star-studded ceremony that will mark out the path to glory for contenders at the first-ever 48-team finals. The most logistically complex World Cup in history will be held across North America from June 11 to July 19, with 16 more teams added to the global showpiece, up from the 32 nations involved in Qatar in 2022. Friday's ceremony, which takes place at the Kennedy Center on the banks of the Potomac River from 1700 GMT, reaches far beyond football, with several of the biggest stars in the American sporting world participating while Trump takes centre stage. FIFA president Gianni Infantino has developed a close relationship with Trump, including making several visits to the White House. Now the US President is expected to be the first ever recipient of the FIFA Peace Prize, which will be awarded during the draw ceremony, "to recognize the enormous efforts of those individuals who unite people, bringing hope for future generations," as Infantino put it. 2026 Winter Olympics flame handed to Milan-Cortina organizers

ATHENS — The flame for the 2026 Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics was handed to the host city organizers on Thursday in an Athens ceremony for a two-month torch relay in Italy before the Games open on February 6. "Today marks a magical moment for all of us," Giovanni Malago, president of the Milan-Cortina organizing committee, said at the Panathenaic Stadium, where the first modern Olympics were revived in 1896. A storm forecast forced Greek organizers to shorten the ceremony and cancel the planned attendance of thousands of schoolchildren. Similar changes were necessary on November 26 in ancient Olympia, birthplace of the Games in 776 BC, where a backup flame was used for the official lighting ceremony. Following a nine-day torch relay around Greece, the flame was kept the previous night at the Acropolis in Athens. It heads to Rome on Thursday for a 63-day, 12,000-kilometer course through Italy's major cities, the Colosseum in Rome and the archaeological site of Pompeii. The Winter Olympics take place from February 6 to 22 with the Paralympic Winter Games following from March 6 to 15. As wit

Bears sign Japanese pitcher Tamura to fill Asian quota

The Doosan Bears signed Japanese pitcher Ichiro Tamura as their Asian quota player for the 2026 season in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). The Bears said Tamura, 31, signed a one-year contract worth $200,000. The right-hander had pitched for the Saitama Seibu Lions in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) from 2017 to this year after being selected as No. 6 overall in the 2016 draft. The reliever has logged 182 2/3 innings over 150 career NPB games, going 4-2 with two saves, eight holds and a 3.40 ERA. In 2025, Tamura had a 3.58 ERA over 27 2/3 innings with the Lions while also appearing in 16 games and recording seven saves as the closer for the Lions' minor league affiliate. The Bears put him through a test during their end-of-season training camp in Miyazaki, Japan, in November, and said they liked his fastball command during his bullpen session and live batting practice. The Bears added that they see Tamura, with his four-pitch mix of a four-seam fastball, forkball, curveball and cutter, as a high-leverage reliever. Starting in 2026, KBO teams are allowed to sign a player fro

Tigers re-sign free agent pitcher Yang Hyeon-jong

The Kia Tigers said Thursday they have re-signed their own free agent pitcher Yang Hyeon-jong. Yang, 37, agreed to a two-year contract, with an option for a third season, worth up to 4.5 billion won ($3.1 million), including incentives. Yang has spent his entire Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) career with the Tigers starting in 2007, after the Tigers picked him first overall at the previous year's draft. The latest deal likely ensures the left-handed pitcher will finish his career with the same club in his hometown of Gwangju. Yang is the KBO's career strikeout leader with 2,185. He also ranks first among all KBO pitchers with 442 starts and 184 wins in starts, and ranks second with 2,656 2/3 innings. He is also the only pitcher in KBO history to toss at least 1,500 innings in 11 straight seasons. He has won three Korean Series titles with the Tigers in 2009, 2017 and 2024. In 2025, Yang went 7-9 with a 5.06 ERA in 30 starts, for his lowest win total and highest ERA in a dozen years as the Tigers missed the postseason in their title defense. The Wiz said Hilliard, 31, agreed to a one-year contract worth $1 million — with $700,000 in salary and a signing bonus of $300,000. Hilliard was selected in the 15th round of the 2015 draft by the Colorado Rockies and played there from 2019 to 2022, and again from 2024 to 2025. He was with the Atlanta Braves in 2023. In 332 career major league games, Hilliard has a .218 average with 44 home runs, 107 RBIs and 26 steals. In 376 games in Triple-A, including 91 this year, Hilliard put up a .275 batting average with 93 homers, 282 RBIs and 60 steals. The Wiz described Hilliard, who bats and throws left, as a line drive hitter with good bat speed, and a quality defender at both first base and in the outfield. Throughout his professional career, Hilliard has logged times at first base and all three outfield positions. The Wiz have now signed all four foreign-born players for the 2026 Korea Baseball Organization season, including one Asian quota
