Padres' Song Sung-mun hits 1st MLB home run in loss

Song Sung-mun has hit his first home run in Major League Baseball. Song hit a solo shot off Chicago Cubs starter Colin Rea to lead off the top of the fifth inning at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Wednesday (local time). Song drilled a middle-middle fastball from Rea and sent it 385 feet into the stands in right field. The line drive shot left Song's bat at 107.7 miles per hour, with a launch angle of 20 degrees. Song had hit a double in his first trip to the plate in the third inning. The former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) All-Star flied out in the sixth and grounded out in the eighth. The Korean is batting .233 in 33 games in his first major league campaign, and has a home run, nine RBIs and six steals. Song's home run cut the Padres' deficit to 9-1 and they went on to lose by 23-3. San Diego starter Walker Buehler served up three home runs and reliever Kyle Hart, a former starting pitcher in the KBO, also surrendered three dingers. Catcher Rodolfo Duran, who pitched the final two innings of the blowout, gave up two more long balls, as the Padres suffered their fifth consecutive loss.

Eagles sign new pitcher Hernandez, reunite with outfielder Perlaza

The Hanwha Eagles announced their signings of two Venezuelan players Saturday, newly acquiring pitcher Wilkel Hernandez and reuniting with their one-time outfielder Yonathan Perlaza for his second tour of duty in South Korea. The Eagles, the 2025 Korean Series runners-up, said Hernandez will make up to $900,000 on his one-year deal. He took a signing bonus of $100,000 and his salary will be $650,000. He can earn another $150,000 in incentives. The 26-year-old right-hander has never pitched in the majors but has 34 games in Triple-A under his belt, all from the 2025 season in the Detroit Tigers system. He went 3-7 with a 4.80 ERA in 114 1/3 innings in those 34 outings, including 19 starts. Over his minor league career, Hernandez has made 152 appearances, including 124 starts, with a 31-42 record and a 4.07 ERA. The Eagles are bringing back Perlaza, the switch hitter who batted .275/.364/.486 with 24 home runs and 70 RBIs with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club in 2024. He signed for up to $1 million -- $700,000 in salary, $200,000 in signing bonus and $100,000 in incentives. He spe

Korea seeking to co-host 2035 Asian Cup football tournament with Japan

Korea will pursue a joint bid with Japan to co-host the top Asian men's football tournament in 2035. An official with the Korea Football Association (KFA) said Friday the national governing body has informed the sports ministry of the plans for the joint bid for the 2035 Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup. "We have exchanged views on co-hosting the Asian Cup through working-level talks with the Japan Football Association," the KFA official said. "We've formed a consensus on how we can save costs by co-hosting the event." Korea and Japan also hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup together. In February this year, Korea submitted its "Expression of Interest" form to the AFC for the 2031 Asian Cup. The AFC received a record seven bids, with Korea joined by Australia, India, Indonesia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and a joint bid from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The UAE withdrew Thursday. The AFC later decided it will select hosts for both the 2031 and 2035 Asian Cups at the same time, and set the Dec. 31 deadline for the Expression of Interest for the 2035 competition

Bears re-sign own free agent pitcher Lee Young-ha

The Doosan Bears signed their own free agent pitcher Lee Young-ha on Thursday. The Bears said the 28-year-old pitcher agreed to a new four-year contract worth up to 5.2 billion won ($3.55 million). He received a signing bonus of 2.3 billion won and will make 2.3 billion won in total salary over the next four seasons. He can earn another 600 million won in incentives. Lee has spent his entire Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) career with the Bears, starting in 2017. In 2025, Lee appeared in a career-high 73 games and picked up 14 holds, also his most in a season. Lee also has some good history with the new Bears manager, Kim Won-hyong. ‘10 titles but only W1 bil. ?’ Even Chinese fans question An Se-young’s prize money

Badminton star An Se-young has set a new record for the most women’s singles titles in a single season, winning 10 international tournaments this year — yet even fans in China say her earnings are far too low compared with her dominance. An has earned more than 1 billion won ($740,000) in prize money this season. Despite the historic achievement, Chinese media and badminton followers say her compensation does not match her unprecedented performance. Currently ranked first worldwide, she has begun training at the Jincheon National Training Center ahead of the 2025 BWF World Tour Finals, which will take place in Hangzhou from Dec. 17 to 21. With the tournament lineup finalized, promotional posters were released this week. Although An has held the top global ranking for more than a year, she appears second on the poster after Japan’s Yamaguchi Akane, who won the world championships in Paris in August. World champions receive automatic invitations to the finals, regardless of ranking. An’s season has been one of the most dominant in badminton history. She won 10 World Tour titles acr

Bears not bringing back outfielder Jake Cave

The Doosan Bears have decided not to bring back American outfielder Jake Cave for his second season in Korea. Cave took to social media Thursday to announce he wasn't coming back with the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club. "I was hoping to get to play in front of you again but the team had other plans," Cave wrote in his Instagram Story. "I also was hoping to get the chance to play in the KBO again but the team has unfortunately made it impossible for me to sign with another team." With the latter part, Cave was referring to the Bears' decision to hold on to Cave's rights even after not coming to terms on a new contract. If KBO teams opt to retain rights to foreign players from the previous season without re-signing them, then those players aren't able to sign with another KBO club without their former team's consent. Teams make these decisions to keep their former players from hurting them while competing for a rival club. Cave became a fan favorite with the Bears this year with his hustle plays on the base paths and in the outfield. He batted .299/.351/.463 with 16 home runs, 87 RBI

Olympic flame begins journey to 2026 Winter Games

ANCIENT OLYMPIA, Greece — The Olympic flame began its journey Wednesday to the Milan Cortina Winter Games — missing a little of its usual magic. Bad weather lashing western Greece forced organizers to move the torch-lighting ceremony indoors, from Olympia’s ancient stadium and temples to a nearby museum. The flame is lit by focusing the sun’s rays with a concave mirror. But with skies overcast, officials used a backup flame kindled during a brief spell of sunshine at Monday’s rehearsal. Greek rower Petros Gaidatzis launched the torch relay, which, after reaching Italy, will be carried across the host country by about 10,000 runners before the Feb. 6–22 competition. The sun ultimately made an appearance over rain-soaked OIympia on Wednesday during the indoor ceremony. Italy is hosting its third Winter Games, but preparations have been plagued by cost overruns and construction setbacks. Organizers say there’s plenty for fans to look forward to: a program featuring 116 medal events, the debut of ski mountaineering, higher female participation and the return of NHL players to Oly

Wiz sign ex-MLB pitcher Caleb Boushley

The KT Wiz announced their signing of former major league pitcher Caleb Boushley on Wednesday. The Wiz said the 32-year-old right-hander agreed to a one-year contract worth up to $1 million. He will make $900,000 in guaranteed money, including a signing bonus, and can earn another $100,000 in incentives. Drafted by the San Diego Padres in 2017, Boushley made his major league debut in 2023 with the Milwaukee Brewers. After appearing in two games for the Minnesota Twins in 2024, Boushley pitched in a career-high 25 games for the Texas Rangers in 2025. He didn't have a win-loss record and had a 6.02 ERA over 43 1/3 innings in the majors. Boushley was selected off waivers by the Tampa Bay Rays in September but didn't pitch in a big league game for them, instead logging three games for their Triple-A team, the Durham Bulls. In 11 Triple-A outings this year, including five starts, Boushley went 2-1 with two holds and a 2.14 ERA. He recorded 24 strikeouts against 13 walks in 33 2/3 innings. Per Baseball Savant, Boushley threw a six-pitch mix in the majors in 2025: a sinker, four-seam fastball, cu

Ex-KBO MVP Kim Jae-hwan becomes free agent after unconditional release by Bears

The Doosan Bears announced Wednesday they have granted veteran slugger Kim Jae-hwan an unconditional release, making the 2018 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular-season MVP a free agent. The Bears and the 37-year-old Kim couldn't come to an agreement on a new deal after Kim's four-year contract expired at the end of the 2025 season. Instead of exercising his rights as a free agent this offseason, Kim chose to first negotiate a new contract with the Bears. It was belatedly revealed Wednesday that Kim's previous deal had included a clause allowing an unconditional release if the two sides couldn't settle on a new pact. Teams that sign players who declare free agency at the onset of the offseason must offer compensation for those players' former teams, either with a combination of cash and a player or with cash alone. However, because Kim has been unconditionally released after initial talks with the Bears broke down, he has hit the open market with no strings attached -- theoretically making it easier for the aging veteran to find a new team. Kim made his KBO debut with the Bears in
