KBO clubs shutting down key pitchers as All-Star break nears

With the end of the first half in the Korean baseball season around the corner, clubs have decided to give their ailing pitchers extra rest starting this week. The LG Twins, tops in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with a record of 50-30-0 (wins-losses-ties), will keep left-hander Song Seung-ki on the injured list for an additional two weeks. Manager Youm Kyoung-youb said Thursday that Song, who had been expected to return from back spasms next Tuesday, will instead take the mound after the July 10-15 All-Star break. Song led all rookies last year with 11 wins and a 3.50 ERA. He was also selected for the Korean national team at the World Baseball Classic, and posted an excellent 1.42 ERA across his first five starts of this season. Things took a sudden turn for the worse for Song in May, though. He endured a stretch in which he allowed 18 earned runs in just 16 2/3 innings, as his ERA jumped to 4.71. Song tossed 5 1/3 shutout innings on May 30 but then was roughed up for six runs on nine hits, including two home runs, in two innings on June 7. He hit the sidelines the next day, with

Korea to take 'scientific approach' in selecting World Cup base camp: coach

Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo said Friday his team will need to take "more of a scientific approach" when selecting their base camp for next year's FIFA World Cup. Hong returned home after attending the World Cup draw in Washington last week and then checking out base camp options for the Taegeuk Warriors in Mexico, one of three co-hosts alongside the United States and Canada. Korea ended up in Group A with Mexico, South Africa and a European playoff winner to be determined in March. Korea will play all three group stage matches in Mexico -- two near Guadalajara and one near Monterrey. Hong told reporters at Incheon International Airport, west of Seoul, that he had visited eight base camp sites. "We focused on elements that we will need, and I liked a few places," Hong said. "But I think we will need to take more of a scientific approach. Climate, adaptation to high altitude and traveling distance were some of our most important considerations." National teams will submit a list of their three preferred choices to FIFA in January. FIFA will then assign camps, taking into account proximit

Teen snowboarder wins halfpipe World Cup title in China

Teen snowboarder Choi Ga-on captured her first World Cup title of the season in the women's halfpipe in China on Friday, after staging a massive comeback in her second of two attempts. Choi finished first with 92.75 points at the International Ski Federation (FIS) Snowboard World Cup in Zhangjiakou, China, 2.50 points ahead of Rise Kudo of Japan. Cai Xuetong of China finished third with 80.50 points. This was Choi's first World Cup victory since December 2023 and bodes well for Choi's medal prospects at the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics in February. Choi, 17, topped the qualification stage with 93.00 points earlier in the week, but she only earned 23.75 points in the first run of the final. By the time Choi was ready for her second run, she was in last place — with three boarders below her after the first run having all posted higher scores than Choi's initial score in their second runs. Choi went out and posted the best score by anyone in the final to snatch the comeback win. In a statement released by her Seoul-based agency, All That Sports, Choi said she attempted some of her best mo

Koreans well off lead after opening round of PGA Tour qualifying event

All three Korean players have found themselves well off the lead after the first round of the final PGA Tour qualifying event. Noh Seung-yul was the top-performing Korean after shooting one-under 69 on the Dye's Valley Course at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, to begin the PGA Tour Q-School's final phase on Thursday (local time). Noh had three birdies and two bogeys to sit five strokes behind the sole leader, Korean American Chan Kim. The top five players will receive their PGA Tour cards for 2026, while the next 40 finishers and ties will earn membership for the second-tier Korn Ferry Tour. Noh, 34, has one PGA Tour title to his name, the 2014 Zurich Classic of New Orleans. He had earned his first full PGA Tour membership for the 2012 season but has been on and off the tour since. Two other Korean players, Ok Tae-hoon and Bae Yong-jun, both shot two-over 72 to tie for 110th. Ok played on Dye's Valley Course while Bae began his round at Sawgrass Country Club. Ok earned a direct entry to the final stage after winning the Player of the Year points race on the Korea PGA Tour this

Giants acquire two new foreign pitchers, re-sign outfielder Reyes for 3rd season

The Lotte Giants announced their signing of three foreign players Thursday, with two new pitchers joining a returning outfielder. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club signed former major league pitchers Elvin Rodriguez and Jeremy Beasley, and decided to bring back outfielder Victor Reyes for his third season in Korea. Rodriguez and Beasley each signed for $1 million — the maximum amount allowed for first-year foreign players — while Reyes agreed to a $1.4 million contract. Rodriguez, 27, made his major league debut with the Detroit Tigers in 2022, and later pitched for the Tampa Bay Rays, the Milwaukee Brewers and the Baltimore Orioles. He has a 0-6 record with a 9.40 ERA in 52 2/3 innings over 15 big league outings, including seven starts. The right-hander from the Dominican Republic pitched for the Tokyo Yakult Swallows in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) from 2023 to 2024. In 39 combined outings there, Rodriguez went 2-6 with eight holds and a save, plus a 2.77 ERA in 78 innings. He had 67 strikeouts against 25 walks. Listed at 193 centimeters, Rodriguez can touch 1

Dinos bring back 2 stars, sign ex-minor leaguer to complete foreign player puzzle

The NC Dinos completed their foreign player signings for the 2026 season on Thursday by bringing back two stars and newly acquiring a former minor leaguer. The Dinos said they have re-signed first baseman Matt Davidson for his third season in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) at $1.3 million with $975,000 in salary and $325,000 in signing bonus. They will also have right-hander Riley Thompson for his second season in Korea at up to $1.25 million. Thompson will make $600,000 in salary in addition to a signing bonus of $400,000. He can take home another $250,000 in incentives. Earlier in the day, the Dinos had announced their signing of minor league pitcher Curtis Taylor to a one-year deal worth up to $900,000 — $420,000 in salary and $280,000 in signing bonus, plus $200,000 available in incentives. The Dinos had signed former Yomiuri Giants pitcher Natsuki Tado as their Asian quota player on Wednesday, and the trio of moves announced Thursday makes the Dinos the second team in the 10-team KBO, after the KT Wiz, to fill all four spots available for foreign-born players in 2026. Veteran reliever confident he can make WBC team

When Korea opens its first training camp for the World Baseball Classic (WBC) in January in Saipan, SSG Landers reliever Noh Kyung-eun will be the team's oldest player at 41. And the durable right-hander will be out to prove that he wasn't called up to camp just to be the proverbial adult in the room and that he can make the final team on merit. "I may get cut during the first camp," Noh said with a mischievous grin while discussing the upcoming trip Tuesday evening before the Golden Glove award ceremony in Seoul. Noh was the winner of this year's Fair Play Award, given to the player who best exhibits sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct on and off the field. "But seriously, I am confident I can make the team. I've been working hard to get into shape," Noh continued. "Ultimately, it will be up to the coaching staff to make that decision. I am just going to go out there and do my thing." If Noh pitches the way he has the last couple of years in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), then manager Ryu Ji-hyun will have no other choice but to take Noh to the WBC. Since 2023, no KBO pitcher

Dinos sign ex-minor league pitcher Curtis Taylor

The NC Dinos announced their signing of former minor league pitcher Curtis Taylor. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club said Taylor agreed to a one-year contract worth up to $900,000. The Canadian right-hander will make $420,000 in salary and took $280,000 in signing bonus. He can earn another $200,000 in incentives. A fourth-round selection by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2016 draft, Taylor has not yet reached the majors, having reached as high as Triple-A. In 2025, Taylor made 31 appearances, including 24 starts, for the St. Louis Cardinals' Triple-A club, the Memphis Redbirds. He went 10-4 with a 3.21 ERA over 137 1/3 innings, while recording 118 strikeouts against 51 walks. Taylor has also pitched in Mexico and spent time in the minor leagues for the Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs, Washington Nationals, Toronto Blue Jays, Tampa Bay Rays and Diamondbacks. In four Triple-A campaigns, Taylor has an 11-5 record with a 3.62 ERA across 196 2/3 innings, with 183 strikeouts and 78 walks. 4-time PGA Tour winner Kim Si-woo reportedly set to join LIV Golf

Kim Si-woo, a four-time PGA Tour winner from Korea, is reportedly on the verge of joining a Saudi Arabia-backed renegade tour next season. Tom Hobbs of Flushing It Golf reported Wednesday (U.S. local time) that Kim was in "late stage negotiations" to join the LIV Golf League, along with another high-profile Korean PGA Tour player. "It's unclear what is holding up the deal, but league sources are confident it will be agreed before the 2026 season starts," Hobbs wrote on X, with his report later picked up by other outlets. LIV Golf is bankrolled by the Public Investment Fund, the sovereign wealth fund of Saudi Arabia. Since its launch in 2022, LIV Golf has successfully poached some major names from the PGA Tour, including major champions Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau and Jon Rahm. In 2025, 13 teams, each made up of four players, competed in LIV Golf, which runs both team and individual standings. Iron Heads GC, captained by Korean American Kevin Na, finished dead last after recruiting the 2024 Korea PGA Tour Player of the Year Jang Yu-bin as the first Kor

Dinos sign Japanese pitcher Toda as Asian quota player

The NC Dinos have signed former Yomiuri Giants pitcher Natsuki Toda as their new Asian quota player for the 2026 season. The Dinos announced Wednesday that Toda, 25, agreed to a one-year deal worth up to US$130,000. His salary will be $100,000, and he received a signing bonus of $20,000. The right-hander can earn another $10,000 in incentives. Starting in the 2026 season, Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) clubs are allowed to sign an extra foreign-born player, either from an Asian country or Australia, in addition to their usual three foreign players. The Dinos became the seventh team among 10 clubs to fill their Asian quota, and Toda is the fifth Japanese player. Toda made his Giants debut in 2021, and he has logged 27 2/3 innings across 19 outings in 2021, 2022 and 2025, posting a 5.53 ERA with 15 strikeouts against eight walks. Toda spent the intervening years with the Giants' minor league club, where he pitched to a 2.42 ERA in 81 2/3 innings in 35 appearances, including seven starts, with a 4-4 record and 73 strikeouts against 14 walks. The Dinos said Toda has a six-pitch mix with fo

Ex-KBO pitcher Gamboa signs minor league deal with Red Sox: reports

One-time Lotte Giants starter Alec Gamboa has reportedly signed a minor league contract with the Boston Red Sox after an up-and-down half season in Korea. Citing league sources, reports out of the United States said Tuesday (local time) that Gamboa agreed to a split contract with an invitation to spring training. If Gamboa reaches the majors, he will make $925,000, but he will earn less while in the minors. Gamboa, 28, has yet to pitch in the majors. In 2025, he signed with the Giants in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) in May to replace injured starter Charlie Barnes, after pitching in Triple-A in the Los Angeles Dodgers system. Gamboa lost his first start in the KBO on May 27 but then won all five starts in June, pitching to a 1.72 ERA over 31 1/3 innings to win the Player of the Month award. However, Gamboa faded badly in the second half of the season, with a 1-7 record and a 4.55 ERA over his final 12 starts. The Giants also fell out of a postseason spot during their late season swoon. Three other pitchers who played in the KBO this year have gone back to the majors. Cody Ponce,
