Heroes, Bears make changes with foreign players

Two Korean baseball clubs made changes with their foreign players Monday, with a former league home run leader switching teams midseason. The Kiwoom Heroes said they will pick up former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) home run king Matt Davidson, who was released by another KBO team, NC Dinos, over the weekend. To make room for Davidson, the Heroes released their American starting pitcher Nathan Wiles. KBO teams are each allowed to carry three non-Asian foreign players, with a maximum two pitchers. Clubs typically sign two starting pitchers and one position player from overseas, but the Heroes have elected to go with two hitters and one pitcher, as Davidson joins Keston Hiura in the lineup while Raul Alcantara will be the lone non-Asian pitcher. The Heroes previously bucked the trend at the start of last season, when they had outfielders Yasiel Puig and Ruben Cardenas, along with pitcher Kenny Rosenberg. Davidson led the KBO with 46 home runs in 131 games in 2024, his first campaign in Korea. He followed that up with 36 home runs last year in 112 games. Davidson had eight homers in 63 ga

Korean streaming service Coupang Play announced Friday that Newcastle will face Team K League, a squad of All-Stars from the domestic league, at 8 p.m. on July 30 at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, just south of Seoul, as part of the "Coupang Play Series." It is an annual event by Coupang Play that invites European clubs for summer exhibitions. Then at 8 p.m. on Aug. 3 at Seoul World Cup Stadium, Newcastle will face Tottenham, their fellow Premier League club captained by Korean superstar Son Heung-min. This will be Tottenham's third visit to Korea in four years for the Coupang Play Series. The August match will be the first all-Premier League showdown since the series launched in 2022. 2 Koreans in early contention at US Open

Korean veterans Kim Si-woo and Im Sung-jae have put themselves in early contention at the third major tournament of the 2025 PGA Tour season. Kim and Im each shot a two-under 70 to tie for third in the first round of the 125th U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, western Pennsylvania, on Thursday (local time). The par-70 course played at 7,372 yards in the first round. Kim and Im are tied with the two-time U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka, with J.J. Spaun of the United States alone at the top at four-under. Thriston Lawrence of South Africa is in second place at three-under. Kim, who has four tour titles, and Im, a two-time tour winner, are both seeking their first major championship victory. This year, Im tied for fifth at the Masters in April, and Kim tied for eighth at the PGA Championship in May. Kim, who had a 7:51 a.m. tee time, said he was lucky to have played in less windy conditions in the morning. After starting his day at No. 10, Kim had two birdies on his first nine holes, and then two birdies and two bogeys over his remaining nine holes. "I played the last couple days

Fueled by failed KBO title defense, Twins slugger Dean keeps focus on team success

After the end of his second season in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) in 2024, LG Twins first baseman Austin Dean collected a few individual awards. He won his second straight Golden Glove as the best overall player in his position and also nabbed his first KBO Fielding Award for his defensive excellence. Dean also received a trophy for leading the league in RBIs with a franchise-record 132. Still, Dean went back to his home in Houston with, in his own words, "a bitter taste in my mouth." That's because the Twins, after winning the 2023 Korean Series title, came up short in their title defense, losing to the Samsung Lions in four games in the second round of the postseason. Back for his third KBO season in 2025, the American slugger remains steadfast in his focus on achieving team success above all else. "Winning the Golden Glove and the defensive award last year was awesome. I'm super proud of the accomplishment. But for me, it just left a bitter taste in my mouth for us to not to get to the Korean Series," Dean told Yonhap News Agency on Thursday before the Twins hosted the SSG

Gwangju FC fined $7,390 for violating financial health rules

The South Korean football club Gwangju FC were slapped with a hefty fine and a ban on player signings for one year Thursday for violating league rules on financial health. The Korea Professional Football League (K League) imposed a 10 million-won ($7,390) fine on Gwangju FC, who reported a net loss of 2.3 billion won in 2024. The league said the ban on player acquisitions will be suspended until 2027 if Gwangju FC improve their financial situations in accordance with their plans submitted to the league office in February and if they resolve their current state of impaired capital by 2027. The K League implemented rules on maintaining financial stability before the 2023 season to help reduce clubs' reliance on their corporate owners or local governments, and to prevent them from spending excessively on player payrolls. Violators can be fined or can get docked points. In an extreme case, teams can also be relegated. Gwangju FC, who had a loss of 1.41 billion won in 2023, are the first team to be disciplined for their financial mismanagement. Also on Thursday, Gwangju FC head coach Lee Jung-h

Tigers lose infielder Yoon Do-hyun to broken finger

The defending South Korean baseball champions Kia Tigers have lost yet another player to an injury, with infielder Yoon Do-hyun ruled out for four weeks with a broken finger. The Tigers announced Thursday that Yoon had suffered a broken index finger on his right hand while trying to field a ground ball during Wednesday's Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) regular-season game against the Samsung Lions. Yoon had been filling in nicely for injured veteran Kim Sun-bin, who has been out since late May with a left calf injury. In 19 games, Yoon was batting .279 with career highs of four home runs, three doubles and nine RBIs. The Tigers, the 2024 Korean Series champions, are already without the reigning league MVP Kim Do-yeong, who went down in late May with his second hamstring injury of the season. Shortstop Park Chan-ho and first baseman Patrick Wisdom have missed some time earlier in the year with injuries. Outfielder and team captain Na Sung-bum hasn't played since April 26 due to a right calf injury. On the pitching side, reliever Kwak Do-gyu underwent season-ending elbow surgery in April,

Lee Jung-hoo's triple streak fuels Giants' 7th straight victory

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants continued his strong form, hitting triples in back-to-back games and helping his team notch a seventh consecutive win. Starting as the leadoff hitter and center fielder in a road game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver on Wednesday (U.S. time), Lee went 1-for-3 with two walks and scored three runs, slightly raising his season batting average from .274 to .275. His only hit of the game came in the top of the third inning. With the Giants already leading 2-0, Lee faced Rockies' left-hander Kyle Freeland and sent an inside fastball deep into right field for a triple. He later came home on a sacrifice fly by teammate Willy Adames. Though the fly ball wasn't deep, Lee's aggressive baserunning allowed him to score before the ball reached home. In addition to his triple, Lee drew two walks, reaching base three times and scoring each time. His final run proved especially crucial. Leading off the top of the ninth with the Giants holding a slim one-run lead, he drew a walk and later scored on a series of hits by his teammates, helping San

Former Korean Olympic chief suspended for 4 years by sports body

Former Korean Olympic chief Lee Kee-heung has been handed a four-year suspension by the nation's top sports organization, sources within the sports community and his aides said Wednesday. The suspension, which bars Lee from holding any executive role in a sports organization during that period, was decided at a recent subcommittee meeting of the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee (KSOC), the sources said. Lee had clashed with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism last year over allegations of misconduct, including questionable hiring practices and illicit financial dealings. The 70-year-old sought an unprecedented third term as KSOC president despite considerable opposition from within the sports community but was ultimately defeated by current president Ryu Seung-min in an election held in January this year. The KSOC said it could not confirm "disciplinary actions on individuals" due to internal regulations. However, it explained that the suspension was not related to ongoing police investigations but was based on the results of an audit conducted by the sports ministry last year. Le

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo belts 3rd triple of the season in return from back pain

San Francisco Giants outfielder Lee Jung-hoo has hit his third triple of the season in his first start since returning from injury. The Korean player had been out of the starting lineup for two games due to what the team described as minor back pain. He returned to the lineup as the leadoff hitter and center fielder in a road game against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Field in Denver on Tuesday (U.S. time), going 1-for-5 with two runs scored. His season batting average now stands at .274. The triple, hit off Rockies' left-handed starter Carson Palmquist, traveled 415 feet and would have cleared the fence for a home run in most Major League Baseball parks. Lee later scored on a sacrifice fly by Wilmer Flores. Lee didn't collect any more hits in the game, but his triple helped spark a late-inning rally that propelled the Giants to a 6-5 comeback victory. The Giants secured the win by scoring four runs in the top of the ninth inning, capped by a go-ahead RBI single from Mike Yastrzemski.

Hall of Famer Beltre to Korean minor leaguers: 'Sacrifice now for future'

After playing for 21 years in Major League Baseball (MLB) in his Hall of Fame career, Adrian Beltre knows a few things about longevity and sustaining success. In his address to Korean minor league players Wednesday, Beltre's message was straightforward: sacrifice the present for the future. "If you make your sacrifices today and endure difficult moments with your mental fortitude, then you can have a better career," Beltre told the Futures League players for the Korea Baseball Organization club SSG Landers in their training facility in the western border island of Ganghwa, Incheon. The Dominican Republic native spoke through a Spanish interpreter. "I've seen many talented players who didn't realize their full potential and didn't last long in the big leagues," Beltre added. Beltre, a four-time All-Star who was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 2024, was in Korea, along with former All-Star pitcher Cole Hamels, on invitation from their former Texas Rangers teammate Choo Shin-soo. Choo, after 16 MLB seasons, played for the Landers from 2021 to 2024 to wrap up his career an
