Korea needs a bigger and better coaching pool

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

With imminent Son Heung-min signing, LAFC schedule press conference for 'major announcement'

Major League Soccer (MLS) club Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) have scheduled a press conference for Wednesday in downtown Los Angeles, apparently to unveil Korean superstar Son Heung-min as their newest member. In a press release issued in both English and Korean, LAFC said they will "make a major announcement" at the presser at 2 p.m. Wednesday at BMO Stadium, or 6 a.m. Thursday (Korean time). The press conference will stream live on LAFC.com and on the club's social media channels — YouTube, Facebook and X. All signs point to Son joining LAFC, following a 10-year run with Tottenham Hotspur. Son left Korea for Los Angeles on Tuesday, apparently to finalize his deal with the MLS club that has been in the rumor mill for weeks. ESPN has reported that Son will join LAFC for a record transfer fee of around US$26 million. The previous record had been the $22 million Atlanta United FC spent last winter to acquire forward Emmanuel Latte Lath. Son, 33, played his final match for Tottenham in a preseason friendly against Newcastle United in Seoul on Sunday. He had announced the previous day th

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo stretches extra-base hit streak to 5 games

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has extended his extra-base hit streak to five games. Lee went 1-for-4 with his 26th double of the season in the Giants' 8-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park in Pittsburgh on Tuesday (local time). Lee hit a ground-rule double down the left field line in the top of the sixth inning, and now has an extra-base hit in his career-best five straight games. He had a double in each of the first three games of that streak before hitting a triple in Monday's game. With 26 doubles, Lee ranks eighth in the National League (NL) and first on the Giants. His nine triples put him alone in second place in the NL, five behind Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Lee is batting .450 (9-for-20) so far in August, having hit safely in all five games this month. For the season, Lee is hitting .258/.326/.410 with six homers and 46 RBIs in 108 games. Elsewhere in the majors Tuesday, Kim Ha-seong of the Tampa Bay Rays was held out of the starting lineup against the Los Angeles Angels at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California. Korean pitching prospect released by US minor league team

Once a can't-miss prospect, Korean pitcher Shim Jun-seok has been cut by his U.S. minor league team. The Florida Complex League Marlins, the Rookie-level affiliate of the Miami Marlins, said Tuesday (local time) that they have released the 21-year-old right-hander. Shim was regarded as a likely first overall pick at the 2022 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) draft, but he skipped the draft in hopes of landing a deal with a Major League Baseball club. Then in January 2023, Shim signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates, who gave him a $750,000 signing bonus. Slowed by injuries, though, Shim has not yet lived up to his hype. While with Duksoo High School in Seoul, Shim dealt with elbow, back and toe injuries. Over in the United States, Shim suffered back and shoulder problems. Shim logged only eight innings in Rookie ball in 2023. In July last year, the Pirates traded him to the Marlins for outfielder Bryan De La Cruz. Shim went 0-3 with a 10.80 ERA in 13 1/3 innings this year, striking out 16 but walking 23. In the 2022 KBO draft, the Hanwha Eagles held the first pick. After Shim pulled out, the Ea

K League 1 champions Ulsan HD hire ex-nat'l team boss Shin Tae-yong as new head coach

The three-time defending Korean football champions Ulsan HD FC announced Tuesday they have hired Shin Tae-yong as their new head coach. Shin, who coached the Korean men's national team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, will be coaching in the K League 1 for the first time since 2012. Shin, 54, is taking over from Kim Pan-gon, who was let go last week after barely a year on the job. Kim had led Ulsan HD to their third straight K League 1 title last fall as a midseason replacement for Hong Myung-bo. This year, however, Ulsan HD are unlikely to win their fourth consecutive title, as they are languishing in seventh place with 31 points, 23 behind the league-leading Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors with 14 matches remaining. Ulsan HD are winless in their past six league contests. Shin is widely considered one of the finest players in league history, helping Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma (currently Seongnam FC) to six K League titles and winning the 1995 MVP award. He holds the league record for nine appearances on the annual Best XI team. Shin was a member of the inaugural K League Hall of Fame class in 2023. In his p

LG Twins welcome back slugger Dean from injury

Trying to chase down the Hanwha Eagles for the top spot in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), the LG Twins welcomed back first baseman Austin Dean from injury Tuesday. Dean drew back into his familiar spot as No. 3 hitter for Tuesday's home game against the Doosan Bears at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. Dean hasn't played since July 1. He hit his 20th homer of the season that day but then complained of pains to his left side the following day, leading to a trip to the injured list. Through 75 games, Dean is batting .272/.369/.543 with 20 homers and 55 RBIs. At the time of his injury, the American infielder is second in the KBO in homers, and tied for fourth in RBIs and on-base plus slugging. Twins manager Youm Kyoung-youb said Dean will serve as designated hitter for Tuesday and again Wednesday, before returning to first base Thursday. "With Austin back, I will be able to give some other players a breather," Youm said in his pregame media scrum. "Other regulars will get to sit out a couple of games down the road." To that end, veteran catcher Park Dong-won was held out of the starti

KBO All-Star pitcher suffers freak season-ending injury during minor league rehab

The Kiwoom Heroes announced Tuesday their All-Star pitcher An Woo-jin will miss the rest of the season after suffering a freak shoulder injury while rehabbing from an elbow surgery in the minor league. According to the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) club, An will undergo surgery to repair ligament damage in his right collarbone, a procedure that will require about a year of recovery. He sustained the injury in a fall while taking fungoes after an unofficial intrasquad game with the Heroes' minor league affiliate Saturday. An, who is fulfilling his mandatory military service in a noncombat capacity while recovering from his elbow operation in 2023, had pitched one inning in that game. An was targeting a September return to the KBO following the end of his military service. When healthy, the 25-year-old had been among the KBO's most dominant starting pitchers. In 2022, An went 15-8 in 30 starts with a 2.11 ERA over 196 innings and had 224 strikeouts, just one shy of the league's single-season record. An was limited to 24 starts in 2023, going 9-7 with a 2.39 ERA, along with 164 strikeouts

Right time for Premier League legend Son to leave

It was either going to be this summer or next, but it turned out to be this. Son Heung-min’s decade at Tottenham Hotspur and the English Premier League is coming to an end. It has been a glorious 10 years and, in truth, it couldn’t have ended better. First, there was the fact the captain lifted the club’s first trophy in 17 years in May — arguably their biggest triumph since 1991 — as Spurs won the Europa League in the Spanish city of Bilbao, beating Manchester United. It was a dreadful game but a magical evening for all fans of the North London club. It ended a poor season for both Tottenham, who finished, incredibly, 17th — just one place above the relegation zone — and for the player. Son struggled for form and fitness, scoring just seven goals in the league. Some thought he would stay for one more season to help the club in the UEFA Champions League. It was not to be. It is surely for the best. With new coach Thomas Frank coming in, it was uncertain how much time Son, now 33 and not as fast as he once was, would have had on the field. It is better to leave on a high, w

Led by 2 major champions, host Korea seeded 3rd at LPGA match-play event

The host country Korea will be seeded third at an LPGA match-play event scheduled for October, with a couple of former major champions leading the way. The LPGA finalized the field of 32 players representing eight nations for the International Crown on Monday (U.S. time). New Korea Country Club in Goyang, just northwest of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province, will host the four-day match-play competition from Oct. 23 to 26. Seven countries — Korea, the United States, Japan, Thailand, Sweden, Australia and China — and the brand-new Team World, made up of one player each from the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa and Oceania, will be in action. The lineups were determined based on world rankings as of Monday, following the conclusion of the AIG Women's Open. The four Korean representatives will be: Kim Hyo-joo (No. 8), Ryu Hae-ran (No. 9), Ko Jin-young (No. 16) and Choi Hye-jin (No. 23). Kim, Ko and Choi were teammates on the 2023 team that finished tied for fifth, while Ryu has never played at an International Crown. "I can't wait to represent Korea at this international event," Ryu said. "Sinc

Son Heung-min travels to US with LAFC move imminent

Korean football icon Son Heung-min departed for Los Angeles on Tuesday, apparently to finalize his transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Los Angeles FC (LAFC) of Major League Soccer (MLS). Son boarded an LA-bound flight out of Incheon International Airport, Tuesday evening, but not before signing autographs for hundreds of fans who had gathered to send off the superstar. Multiple reports have claimed this week Son has agreed to join LAFC, with only the signing and official announcement remaining. Earlier Tuesday, ESPN reported that the Korea national team captain is expected to be unveiled as a new member of LAFC as early as Wednesday. The reported transfer fee is approximately $26 million, according to ESPN. The BBC also cited a fee of about 20 million pounds, adding, "The final details of the transfer remain in discussion, but his move to LAFC is now considered subject just to the completion of paperwork and a medical." Son confirmed his departure from Tottenham on Saturday during a press conference in Seoul, calling it "one of the toughest decisions of my football career." He officially a

FC Barcelona thump Daegu FC in final Korea friendly

FC Barcelona wrapped up their Korean summer tour with a 5-0 victory over Daegu FC on Monday. Stars Robert Lewandowski, Marcus Rashford and Gavi were among the goal scorers for the Spanish giants in front of 45,183 fans at Daegu Stadium in Daegu, 235 kilometers southeast of Seoul. Last Thursday, Barca had defeated FC Seoul 7-3 in Seoul, behind braces by Lamine Yamal and Ferran Torres. Yamal, the 18-year-old sensation, got his second straight start in Korea, and assisted Gavi's opening goal of the match in the 21st minute. After drawing multiple defenders to himself on the right side of the box, Yamal found Gavi just outside the center of the box. The midfielder then fired a left-footed shot into the bottom right corner for a 1-0 lead. The goal came moments after Daegu FC had blown a chance to grab the lead. When Jeong Chi-in rolled a pass from the left wing, Barca goalkeeper Joan Garcia mistimed his dive to catch the ball. It landed on Geovani's feet with nothing but a wide-open net in front of him and Garcia down and out, but the forward airmailed the shot. Robert Lewandowski doubled Barca
