What about Park Ji-sung or Lee Young-pyo as head coach?

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Son Heung-min shrugs off nat'l team coach's comments on captaincy

Son Heung-min, longtime captain of the South Korean men's national football team, isn't putting much stock into recent comments by his head coach suggesting a role change for the superstar. Son has been South Korea's skipper since 2018. But head coach Hong Myung-bo, in announcing his squad for two upcoming friendlies in the United States, said Aug. 25, he may or may not name a new captain before next year's FIFA World Cup. Hong did not offer Son his full support when given a chance before departing for America, Monday, saying he only wanted to bring up the possibility of changes for the team in the months leading up to the World Cup. Addressing the issue for the first time, Son told reporters at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, Friday (local time), that he had no issues with Hong's words. "There's no reason for me to feel uncomfortable. I don't really have anything to say to that," Son said on the eve of South Korea's match against the U.S. at the same venue Saturday. "It's important for us players to do the best they can in their current positions. I will always do my

S. Korea coach chasing both result, process in friendly vs. US

South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo is chasing two rabbits as the Taegeuk Warriors gear up for an away friendly match against the United States this weekend, hoping his players stick to a proper process and also come away with a good result. "It's important to get the result we want playing the way we want," Hong told reporters at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, Friday (local time), the same venue where South Korea and the U.S. will square off Saturday evening. "It's also crucial for us to execute the tactics we've been working on against a strong opponent. The best-case scenario for us will be to accomplish both of those elements." Hong's South Korea are ranked 23rd in the FIFA rankings, eight spots below the U.S., coached by Mauricio Pochettino. This will be South Korea's first match since qualifying for next year's FIFA World Cup that Hong will have the services of stars from foreign leagues. In July, South Korea hosted and competed at the East Asian Football Federation E-1 Football Championship only with players from the domestic and Japanese leagues. One player

Korea set to take on World Cup co-host US with Korean German midfielder waiting in wings

Korea will face the United States on the weekend in the first of their two friendly matches scheduled for September in America, as they look to ratchet up their preparations for the FIFA World Cup next summer. Ranked 23rd in the world, Korea will face 15th-ranked U.S. at Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, at 5 p.m. Saturday (local time), or 6 a.m. Sunday (Korean time). The Taegeuk Warriors will then face world No. 13 Mexico in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday (local time). Korea's two opponents this month will also be co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, along with Canada. Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo has said he sees the two-match trip as an opportunity to test his team's mettle against strong opponents while also getting an early peek into playing conditions on U.S. soil. Korea have five wins, three draws and three losses all time against the U.S., though the last win came in a friendly match in December 2001. Korea lost the two teams' most recent match, a friendly in Los Angeles in February 2014, by 2-0. Hong's 26-man squad features a mix of usual suspects and youngsters

Nat'l football team forward shakes off disappointment over failed Germany move

With his potential transfer to the top German league foiled, South Korea international forward Oh Hyeon-gyu has already moved on and is ready to stay locked in for the national team's upcoming friendly matches in the United States. Oh, who has been playing for the Belgian outfit KRC Genk since last year, was reportedly on his way to VfB Stuttgart in the Bundesliga during the German transfer window last month. However, VfB Stuttgart reportedly balked at Oh's medical history, and the two sides failed to reach an agreement. Speaking to South Korean reporters at the national team camp in New York, Oh acknowledged that negotiations had not gone as smoothly as he would have liked. "I was disappointed, because physically and mentally, I was ready," Oh said before a training session at Icahn Stadium, where he and his South Korea teammates are preparing for friendlies against the United States on Saturday in New Jersey and Mexico on Tuesday in Tennessee. "But I put it all behind me when I left Stuttgart for the U.S. I think it wouldn't be professional for me to stay down on myself and wallow in

Court upholds suspended jail term for footballer Hwang Ui-jo for illegal filming

A Seoul court on Thursday upheld a suspended one-year prison term against footballer Hwang Ui-jo for illegally filming his sexual encounters with a woman without her consent. An appellate panel of the Seoul Central District Court affirmed the earlier ruling suspended for two years against the striker for the Turkish professional football club Alanyaspor. The 33-year-old was earlier indicted on charges of filming two women without their consent on four occasions between June and September 2022. The court convicted him of charges related to one woman but acquitted him of charges of secretly filming the other when they were on a video call, just as the earlier ruling did. "The victims experienced extreme mental distress," the court said. "While the act of dissemination was done by someone else, it was based on the defendant's filming." After the ruling, Hwang released a statement apologizing to the victims and vowed to focus on football to regain trust from his fans.

K League players aim to make country proud at continental tournaments

Players set to participate in Asian club football tournaments starting this month said Thursday they will try to make Korea and the domestic league proud. Ulsan HD FC, Gangwon FC and FC Seoul of the K League 1 will play in the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Elite, the continent's top club event. Pohang Steelers, also representing the K League 1, will play in the second-tier AFC Champions League Two. The opening phases for both tournaments start in two weeks, and the champions will be crowned next spring. At the players' joint press conference in Seoul, Ulsan defender Kim Young-gwon said he considers a chance to play at the AFC tournament "a privilege." "We haven't been playing well in the league, and so we want to try to turn things around there," Kim said, with Ulsan, three-time defending K League 1 champions, stuck in eighth place this season with 10 matches remaining. "But that doesn't mean we will not take the AFC Champions League seriously. We know the importance of the tournament, and since we had a disappointing showing last year, we want to do much better thi

K League coaches call for looser foreign player quota ahead of continental tournaments

Head coaches for the four South Korean clubs competing at upcoming Asian tournaments called for a rule change Thursday that will allow them to deploy more foreign players at continental competitions. Starting later in September, Ulsan HD FC, Gangwon FC and FC Seoul of the K League 1 will play at the top-tier Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Champions League Elite, while Pohang Steelers, another K League 1 side, will compete at the AFC Champions League Two. Currently, K League 1 clubs can sign up to six foreign-born players but can only play four of them at the same time. Other Asian clubs have much looser quota systems, and Johor Darul Ta'zim of Malaysia, for instance, have more than a dozen players from other countries, including Spain, England, Brazil, France and Argentina. This discrepancy can hurt South Korean clubs' competitiveness at AFC events, the coaches said at their joint press conference Thursday. "I absolutely think we have to loosen our foreign player quotas if we want to give any meaning to even playing at the AFC Champions League," Ulsan head coach Shin Tae-yong said. "

Kim Ha-seong belts 1st home run for Braves

Kim Ha-seong has gone deep for the first time as a member of the Atlanta Braves. Kim launched a go-ahead, three-run home run in the top of the seventh inning, helping the Braves beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1 at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Wednesday (local time). With the Braves down 1-0, Kim came up with two outs and runners at the corners in the seventh against reliever Drew Pomeranz. Kim promptly drilled a first-pitch fastball into the seats in left field to put the Braves up 3-1. They added another run in the seventh and scored once in the eighth to complete the come-from-behind win. It was Kim's third home run of the season. The ball left Kim's bat at 108.5 miles per hour and traveled 391 feet at a launch angle of 22 degrees. This was Kim's second game for the Braves, who claimed him off the waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday. Kim went 2-for-4 in his Braves debut Tuesday and then added his first homer with the new team the next day. The homer was Kim's only hit in four at-bats from the No. 7 spot in the lineup. He is batting .228 for the season. Slowed by assorted injuries, Kim only

World Cup tickets initially to cost $60-$6,730 but could fluctuate with dynamic pricing

MIAMI — Ticket prices for next year’s World Cup will range initially from $60 for group-stage matches to $6,730 for the final, but could change as soccer’s top event adopts dynamic pricing for the first time. The prices are up from a range of $25 to $475 for the 1994 tournament in the United States and for the U.S. dollar equivalent $69 to $1,607 when ticket details were announced for the 2022 tournament in Qatar. “I think the message is ‘Get your tickets early,’ especially if you know where you will be, because you live in that city, or you’re a fan of the three hosting nations, and then you know already when and where they will play,” said Heimo Schirgi, the World Cup’s chief operating officer. “So that’s the message: ‘Get your tickets early,’ because anything could happen.” Next year’s tournament runs from June 11 to July 19 and will be played at 11 sites in the U.S., three in Mexico and two in Canada. The tournament expanded from 32 nations to 48 and from 64 games to 104. The initial draw period will be limited to Visa card holders and will run from 11 a

Half-Korean nat'l football team player says his heart told him to pick Korea

Born in Germany to a Korean mother and a German father, midfielder Jens Castrop grew up representing his birth country as a junior, from under-16 to under-21 levels. Now 22, Castrop says he has chosen to play for Korea because he listened to what his heart told him. The midfielder for Borussia Monchengladbach switched his footballing allegiance to Korea in August and then earned his first selection for the Korean senior national team later that same month. It made Castrop the first foreign-born player of mixed heritage to be chosen for the Korean men's squad. In New York to prepare for upcoming friendly matches against the United States and Mexico, Castrop told Korean reporters Wednesday (local time) that the decision to choose Korea over Germany was entirely his own. "It was a very tough decision. And I think, with this kind of decision in your life, you have to listen to your heart," Castrop said before a training session at Icahn Stadium in the Big Apple. "And my heart said I want to play for Korea, and that's why I'm very proud that I'm here now." Castrop said his Korean-born mother
