What about Park Ji-sung or Lee Young-pyo as head coach?

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Choi Yong-hee takes bronze in compound for host Korea's 1st medal at archery worlds

Choi Yong-hee grabbed a bronze medal in the men's individual compound event for the host Korea's first medal at the World Archery Championships on Monday. Choi defeated Curtis Broadnax of the United States 146-145 in the bronze medal match at the May 18 Democracy Plaza in Gwangju, 270 kilometers south of Seoul. The world championships began Saturday with the men's, women's and mixed team events in compound, and Korea was shut out of medals in all three. In individual competitions, Choi was the only Korean archer, male or female, to even get past the round of 32. In individual compound matches, archers each take 15 arrows, three arrows across five ends. Cumulative points determine the winner, with the maximum score being 150. In case of a tie after five ends, archers go to a shoot-off, with the one hitting closer to the center of the target earning the victory. Choi held off James Lutz of the United States 147-146 in the round of 16, and then beat Yagiz Sezgin of Turkey 148-147 in the quarterfinals. Choi then lost to Nicolas Girard of France in the shoot-off in the semifinals, after the tw

In August, Song led all players with 42 hits, 28 runs scored and a .726 slugging percentage, while ranking second with a .396 batting average and third with a .463 on-base percentage. He was fourth with eight home runs and fifth with 22 RBIs, while tying for fifth with six steals. On Aug. 15, Song launched his 20th home run of the season to become the first member of the 20-20 club in 2025. He has 24 homers and 23 steals through Sunday. Fading Lotte Giants seeking 1st win of September in KBO

Having lost their grip on a postseason berth in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), the Lotte Giants will try to win their first game of September in a crucial, four-game week. The Giants will enter the new week ranked sixth in the 10-team league standings, at 62-62-6 (wins-losses-ties). They opened August comfortably in third place, with a decent chance to move up to second place, but posted the league's worst record that month at 7-16-3. With three consecutive losses to begin September, the Giants are the only team without a win this month. They are only a half game back of the KT Wiz (63-62-4) for the fifth and final playoff spot, but the Wiz have a game in hand. The NC Dinos (58-62-6) are two games behind the Giants in seventh place and have four games in hand on the Giants. Among the six teams vying for the final three postseason spots — with the LG Twins (78-47-3) and the Hanwha Eagles (73-52-3) having pulled away as the two best clubs — the Giants have the fewest games left with 14. They will play four of those this week -- two against the Eagles at home, Sajik Baseball Sta

Korea taking on Mexico in pursuit of 2nd straight friendly win in US

After enjoying a tidy win over the United States over the weekend, Korea will seek another victory on American soil when they face Mexico in their second friendly match there this month. Coached by Hong Myung-bo, Korea, world No. 23, will play 13th-ranked Mexico at Geodis Park in Nashville, Tennessee, at 8 p.m. Tuesday (local time), or 10 a.m. Wednesday (Korean time). The Taegeuk Warriors are fresh off a 2-0 defeat of the home team U.S. in New Jersey on Saturday, thanks to a goal and an assist by their captain Son Heung-min. Head coach Hong Myung-bo praised efforts by Son and the rest of his team, and called the win a "compact match," the likes of which Korea hadn't played in a long time. Hong's continued experiment with the back-three formation, with Bayern Munich's Kim Min-jae anchoring the line, had its finest moment in that U.S. victory. After overcoming some shaky early moments, Kim served as the steady presence on defense and also helped generate opportunities at the other end with sharp passes. Son was his vintage self while playing as the striker. He also earned his 135th cap in

Carlos Alcaraz beats rival Jannik Sinner at US Open for 6th Slam title and No. 1 ranking

NEW YORK — So maybe the first U.S. Open final between young, elite rivals Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner wasn’t as long, riveting and dramatic as their matchup to decide the championship at the French Open. Perhaps it wasn’t as seemingly meaningful and plot-driven as their showdown for the Wimbledon trophy. Still, what the No. 2-seeded Alcaraz’s 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over No. 1 Sinner on Sunday did do was significant. Alcaraz reasserted his superiority over the defending champion , wrested away the top spot in the ATP rankings and left tennis fans eager for whenever their next clash will come. They are the first two men in the sport’s history to face each other in three consecutive Grand Slam finals within a single season. “I’m seeing you more than my family,” Alcaraz joked during the trophy ceremony, eliciting a grin from Sinner. “It’s great to share the court, to share the locker rooms, everything.” This 2-hour, 42-minute win gave Alcaraz, a 22-year-old from Spain, leads over Sinner, a 24-year-old from Italy, of 10-5 in their head-to-head series, 6-4 in tot

Coventry sets up panels to reshape Olympics, including one on women

LAUSANNE, Switzerland — Kirsty Coventry, the new International Olympic Committee (IOC) president, is following up on her promise "to protect the female category" by setting up a working group on women's sport. The group was one of four panels announced to discuss the evolution of the Olympic program, the future of the Youth Olympic Games, and the organization's commercial partnerships and marketing. While the members of those three panels were named, those in the "The Protection of the Female Category" group were withheld. "The names of the members of the working group will remain confidential for now to protect the integrity of the group and their work," the IOC said in the announcement of the group on Friday. The group "will look at how we can best protect the female category. The group will consist of experts and IFs (international federations)," said the IOC. Coventry, the Olympic body's first woman president, signalled the creation of the group when she took up the role on June 23. Son scores and assists to lead Korea over host US 2-0

NEW YORK — Son Heung-min scored one goal and set up another to spark Korea's 2-0 victory over the United States in an international football friendly on Saturday. The matchup between two clubs bound for the 2026 World Cup was played at Harrison, New Jersey, in the home stadium of MLS's New York Red Bulls. The Koreans advanced through Asian qualifying to next year's World Cup, to be co-hosted by the Americans, Canada and Mexico. Son, a striker for LAFC of MLS, scored in the 18th minute and Lee Dong-gyeong added another in the 43rd to secure Korea's triumph. Son had previously played for U.S. coach Mauricio Pochettino at Tottenham Hotspur, where Pochettino called Son one of his most important players. Korea improved to 4-2 with two drawn in the all-time rivalry against the U.S. men, winning their first meeting since a U.S. home triumph in 2014. The Americans, coming off a 2-1 loss to Mexico in July's CONCACAF Gold Cup final, welcomed back Christian Pulisic after he missed the U.S. run to the Gold Cup final. "It's a team that's coming together," U.S. midfielder Sebastian Berhalter said. "We

Sabalenka beats Anisimova to win second straight US Open title

NEW YORK — Aryna Sabalenka retained her U.S. Open crown with a 6-3 7-6(3) win over American eighth seed Amanda Anisimova in the U.S. Open women's final on Saturday, underlining her claim as the modern queen of the hardcourt. The Belarusian has not missed a hardcourt major final since 2022 and her latest trophy brings her Grand Slam haul to four, as she became the first woman to win back-to-back U.S. Opens since Serena Williams claimed three straight from 2012 to 2014. The battle between two of tennis' hardest-hitting, biggest-serving women boiled down to unforced errors as Sabalenka kept them down to 15 compared to 29 from the racket of her opponent. "I want to thank everyone who came here, who flew in to be there in my box," said Sabalenka, who fell to her knees after clinching it with an unreturnable serve and jumped up and down with her coaches in the stands in a scene of utter joy. "I'm going to reach a lot more finals and I don't care where you are in the world I want you in my box." Playing in only her second major final, New Jersey-born Anisimova had the partisan fans at the fame

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo has 2nd career 4-hit game; Kim Ha-seong knocks in run in Atlanta home debut

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants recorded his second career four-hit game in a road win. Lee batted 4-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored, helping the Giants beat the St. Louis Cardinals 8-2 at Busch Stadium in St. Louis on Friday (local time). Lee, who is now batting .267 with a .744 on-base plus slugging, had his first four-hit effort on Aug. 3 against the New York Mets. The South Korean center fielder has hit safely in all three games in September, with seven hits in 11 at-bats. Batting sixth, Lee flied out to center in the top of the first inning, and then picked up four hits in his next four trips to the plate. He led off the fourth inning with a single to spark a four-run rally. After a single in the fifth, Lee hit his 11th triple of the season in the seventh. He is now alone in second place in the National League in that category, behind only Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks with 16 triples. Lee completed his four-hit night with an infield single to shortstop Masyn Winn. Elsewhere in the majors Friday, Kim Ha-seong of the Atlanta Braves hit a sacrifice fly in his

The Samsung Lions have broken the single-season attendance record in South Korean baseball. The Lions said Saturday their overall home attendance reached 1,401,262 after they defeated the Kiwoom Heroes 8-3 before a sellout crowd of 24,000 the previous night at Daegu Samsung Lions Park in Daegu, 235 kilometers southeast of Seoul. The previous record in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) was 1,397,499 set by the LG Twins in 2024. The Lions have 10 more home games left this regular season, which is scheduled to end Sept. 30. They are leading the KBO this year with an average of 22,972 fans per game and have the second-most sellouts with 47, eight behind the Hanwha Eagles. The Lions are in the thick of a battle for a postseason spot. After Friday's win, they are in fourth place at 64-61-2 (wins-losses-ties) but are only one game ahead of fifth-place KT Wiz and 1 1/2 games better than sixth-ranked Lotte Giants.
