Student's offered 'A' for illegal sports study

Korea National Sport UniversityA research team at Korea National Sport University in Seoul carried out tests on students for over a decade without a proper license, and awarded them with “A’s” in their classes.According to a report by the Korea Center for Investigative Journalism, the study looked at the impact of sports on the body and involved extracting muscles and fats from the subjects.The team consisted of six professors, graduate school students and outside researchers. However, one of professors who conducted the extractions did so without a medical license. More than a half of 218 volunteers were the university’s students, who were told they would be given an “A” in classes if they participated.One student who volunteered in the experiment reportedly cannot play his sport anymore due to side effects from the extraction.

Korea's pop diva Ailee returns

K-pop diva Ailee will drop her third mini-album next week, titled “Magazine,” her agency YMC Entertainment said this week. The agency tweeted a teaser image for the album ­ which features the singer posing as a clown. The album will be released next Thursday (Sept. 25). A launch event will be held the same day at Chungdam-dong’s Ilzee Art Hall.“Fans can expect to see a new side of Ailee, a new attractiveness,” YMC said in a release. It’s the singer’s first new release since being embroiled in a scandal, in which an unauthorized nude photo was released. However, she has stayed active, performing live and making television appearances.YMC will give tickets to 100 fans who answer the question, “Why I need to be at Ailee’s showcase,” at the website www.bugs.co.kr.Two fans will be chosen to take a photo with the singer.Also referred to as Korea’s Beyonce, Ailee has become well-known for her performances on the show, “Immortal Song”, where Korean singers perform cover songs on stage. Korea ranks 75th on 'well-being' survey

South Koreans are not satisfied with the quality of their lives compared to other Asian nations, a poll showed.According to the Gallup-Healthways Global Well-Being Index 2013, only 14 percent of Koreans report that they are “thriving” in three out of five elements of “well-being.” Overall, Korea ranked 75 out of 135 countries on the survey.The five elements put forward by the survey were purpose in life, social relationships, financial management, community and physical health.Forty-six percent of Koreans reported that they were “struggling” when it came to life purpose; 40 percent said they were “suffering” in the same category.For social relationships, 47 percent expressed “struggling.” Less than half that number gave a positive response.Sixty-three percent stated that they were struggling to find security within their communities, and 65 struggling with physical health.The factor with most positive responses was financial management, in which 37 percent expressed that they were “thriving.”The top countries on

Old Korean film returns to movie fans

A scene from "Tuition"The first Korean children’s film, released nearly a quarter-century ago, has been restored into digital format, the Korean Film Archive announced this week.The organization said it had found a copy of the 1940 film “Sueup-ryo,” or Tuition, in China and that it had completed the restoration project.  The movie, directed by Choi In-kyu and Bang Han-joon, is about a boy who becomes troubled due to his school tuition. It was Korea’s first film with a child in a leading role. It is also one of only 15 Korean films produced before 1945 known to remain today.The movie was filmed and takes place in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, so it has high value as a historic record for the region.The archive will hold screenings on October 25 and 30. For more information, visit http://www.koreafilm.or.kr or call 02-3153-2001

'Panty thief' busted in Seoul

A 47-year old burglar arrested by Seoul police has drawn attention because of his obsession with women’s panties.  The man identified as Lee robbed 17 residences in the Gwanak and Yeongdeungpo districts between January to September, stealing 10 million won ($96,000) worth household goods. He also took 39 pairs of panties, 14 bras and 15 pairs of stockings. The lingerie collection was revealed along with a pipe cutter when police inspected Lee’s backpack late Friday night.   The police questioned Lee, suspecting he might have committed rape. But Lee apparently said he simply took the items because they are “less sweaty and more comfortable to wear.” Lee said that since his divorce in 2005, he has resorted to wearing women’s underwear while he masturbates.

Naked couple's 'love fight' caught on tape

A naked couple was spotted chasing each other near a waste-processing factory in Yongin, Gyeonngi Province this week. Police said the scene, captured on CCTV, did not appear to be a case of harassment, but a “love fight.”In incident occurred late Monday night. The video show that the couple’s car was parked for around 40 minutes. At one point, the woman burst out of the vehicle, naked, followed by the man. After a chase, the two embrace and return to the car.Police arrived shortly after a bus driver reported the incident. However, the couple had already left.  “Considering all the potential factors, it is hard to say that the woman was under sexual harassment. It seems rather like a love fight,” said a police official.“The woman didn’t send any signs of help to the bus driver even though she saw the bus. The car was also stopped at a sobriety check point and she didn’t make any signal for help.”

Police busted two Palestinian national football players participating in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games for sexually harassing a Korean staffer, Incheon police said Wednesday.According to the police, the footballers approached the 25-year-old woman in a laundry room inside the Athlete’s Village on Monday around noon and asked to take a picture together. The police say they used to the opportunity to touch her waist and breast areas.The Palestinians admitted their misconduct during the police investigation. The police said they were sent back to the village after the initial investigation but will be transferred to prosecutors.A similar incident occurred Tuesday when the police busted a 38-year-old Iranian equipment manager for sexually harassing a 21-year-old female Korean volunteer.

'Breast-enhancement' supplements seized

Print ad for an unknown breast enhancement supplement manufactured in Asian region Prosecutors took into custody a woman and four accomplices for selling illegal Thai supplements that claim to enlarge breasts but are harmful to the body, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said Wednesday. The criminals, one of them known by surname Choi, 28, were charged with breaking food safety laws. The supplements contain “pueraria mirifica,” a Thai kudzu root that the ministry confirmed may cause hormonal side effects as a trade-in for larger breasts. An investigation revealed that Choi and the others managed to smuggle in the supplements from foreign online markets and resold them in domestic markets through an online blog and second-hand trading websites from April to July.  Prosecutors also arrested a woman known as Kim, 34, for illegally selling her own concoctions that she claimed were breast-enhancement supplements.
