Old Korean film returns to movie fans

Listen

A scene from "Tuition"

The first Korean children’s film, released nearly a quarter-century ago, has been restored into digital format, the Korean Film Archive announced this week.

The organization said it had found a copy of the 1940 film “Sueup-ryo,” or Tuition, in China and that it had completed the restoration project.

The movie, directed by Choi In-kyu and Bang Han-joon, is about a boy who becomes troubled due to his school tuition. It was Korea’s first film with a child in a leading role. It is also one of only 15 Korean films produced before 1945 known to remain today.

The movie was filmed and takes place in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, so it has high value as a historic record for the region.

The archive will hold screenings on October 25 and 30.
