'Breast-enhancement' supplements seized

Print ad for an unknown breast enhancement supplement manufactured in Asian region Prosecutors took into custody a woman and four accomplices for selling illegal Thai supplements that claim to enlarge breasts but are harmful to the body, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety said Wednesday. The criminals, one of them known by surname Choi, 28, were charged with breaking food safety laws. The supplements contain “pueraria mirifica,” a Thai kudzu root that the ministry confirmed may cause hormonal side effects as a trade-in for larger breasts. An investigation revealed that Choi and the others managed to smuggle in the supplements from foreign online markets and resold them in domestic markets through an online blog and second-hand trading websites from April to July.  Prosecutors also arrested a woman known as Kim, 34, for illegally selling her own concoctions that she claimed were breast-enhancement supplements. She made chewable pills with domestic kudzu root powders. An investigation revealed that Kim made some seven million won ($6,700) from Dec

The first thrown egg hit the mayor’s right shoulder, while the second one crashed against the wall behind him.The stadium, being held to house the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) expansion team NC Dinos, has been a controversial issue.  Originally, it was supposed to be built in Jinhae, but the team, as well as the KBO, argued that the location would not be accessible enough.Changwon is a combination of three municipalities: Changwon, Jinhae and Masan, with the latter two becoming districts within what is now a unified city. The stadium is being built on the ground currently occupied by Masan Stadium, which the Ahn says will be more accessible for all residents.Jihae politicians have protested since Ahn announced the new site earlier this month.Ah

Job recruiters look at resume photo first

For Korean job recruiters, the most important factor in finding employment is the applicant’s resume photograph, a survey found. According to the poll conducted by Job Korea, an online portal for recruitment, 34.3 percent of 446 recruiters voted that a good photo at the top of the resume is the most important factor they consider.  “We seek new workers that we feel will be sincere, passionate, and have a professional mind,” Choi Chang-ho, Job Korea’s Employment Institute deputy department head said. “A resume should emphasize talent in whatever form, through the resume.” Unlike many other countries, it is common practice to include a photograph with a resume.  While the practice in some cases leads to discrimination, one cosmetic surgeon argued that in most cases, it’s more about a professional “image.”   “People don’t necessary look for pretty faces, but rather try to leave out people that set off a negative image that could hurt for the organization,” Kang Jin-han, a cosmetic chin

Quitting smoking for vacation

The government recently moved to reduce Korea’s soaring smoking rate by announcing plans to raise the price of cigarettes. The Gangwon Provincial Police Agency (GPPA), however, has an alternative plan: reward those who kick the habit with vacation time. The GPPA has devised an incentive program to encourage its conscripted officers (those who are serving as law enforcement officers during their mandatory military service period) to quit smoking. Under the plan, officers who smoke are given three days if they go smoke-free for 90 days.Participating officers will be medically tested to ensure that they haven’t smoked. After quitting smoking for six months, additional days will be given."We want to plant a determination to quit smoking, which is why we have come up with the incentive of offering vacations," an official was quoted as saying. The recent announcement by the government to raise cigarette prices has affected many smokers, including soldiers and policemen. The campaign started last month in August and will continue until the end of October.Fifty-nine percent of all s

'Roaring Currents' sued for portrayal of general

Descendents of Bae Seol, a 16th century military general, on Monday filed a defamation suit against the record-shattering domestic film “Roaring Currents” and its director Kim Han-min.The descendents said that four scenes inaccurately depicted Bae Seol, who fought in battles against Japan. The film depicts Bae as setting fire to a “turtle ship” – a warship used during the Joseon period (1392-1910) – and attempting to assassinate Admiral Yi Sun-sin, the hero on which “Roaring Currents” is based.  The character is shot to death as he attempt to flee.According to historical records, Bae left the front lines after getting approval from Admiral Yi. He was supposed to return to fighting, but instead fled. Though he was caught and executed two years later, the Joseon Dynasty recognized his contributions in battle.  The Bae family said it was bringing the case to court because it had not received an apology from anyone associated with the film.

TV stations battle to land Seo Tae-ji interview

With iconic rock star Seo Tae-ji set to make a comeback next month, national television networks are competing for an exclusive interview.  Major broadcasters including MBC, SBS and KBS have reportedly been working to secure an appearance by the 43-year-old singer, who rose to fame in the 1990s and has remained popular since.  Anticipation is high for the new album, which is his first since 2008’s “Atomos Part Moai.” Since he has kept a low profile in recent years, fans are curious both about his music and life. There will be plenty for Seo to discuss: his divorce with actress Lee Ji-ah, his second marriage to actress Lee Eun-seong, and the birth of his first child in August.  Seo recently announced that he will hold a comeback performance, titled “Christmalowin,” at Jamsil Olympic Park on October 18.
