Singer Kim Jang-hoon / Korea Times fileIn the latest instance of people behaving badly on airplanes, singer-activist Kim Jang-hoon was caught smoking on a Korean Air flight from France to Incheon last week.The 49-year-old singer smoked in the airplane’s restroom during the flight of Thursday, prosecutors said Tuesday.He was fined one million won ($910) for violating the Aviation Safety and Security Act, Incheon District Prosecutor’s Office said.When he was under police investigation, Kim said he was stressed over a cancelled concert. “I was also nervous due to a panic disorder, so I smoked,” he was quoted as saying.“It was his first offense, and he immediately apologized when the cabin crew prevented him from smoking. So we didn’t put him on trial,” a prosecution official said.Kim has been known for his philanthropy as well as his efforts to promote the Dokdo Islets as Korean territory.Kim has reportedly donated more than 10 billion won ($9.2 million) to the poor, including a monthly donation of 15 million won to low-income students and

/ Courtesy of Interpark Booksellers are apparently reaping the benefits of the country’s new tax code, which takes effect this year, as citizens scramble to buy self-help tax books.Since changes in the rules were applied for the first time this year, more wage earners have looked for guidance on how to get the most money back, or how to pay the least amount of income tax.According to online shopping mall Interpark, sales of tax preparation books have increased by 4.5 percent in January, on a year-on-year basis.Such books cover changes to the tax law, provide instructions for preparing tax returns, and offer valuable tips for planning one’s finances. “People are more interested in spending less rather than earning more especially when the country is in the midst of an economic downturn,” Park Jun-pyo, a merchandiser at Interpark, said. “Once you understand the concept of this year-end tax adjustment, you will be able to map out this year’s spending plans more easily.”The Ministry of Strategy and Finance revised the tax code in September 2

/ screen capture from YouTubeAn angry driver in Incheon blocked the path of an ambulance for 10 critical minutes on Monday, after the medical vehicle rear-ended his car while rushing a child to the hospital. According to SBS, the ambulance was transporting a four-year-old child in critical condition to the hospital. The child suffers from a brain disorder. The driver, who was in front of the ambulance, made a sudden stop and was hit from behind. Footage taken from the ambulance’s dashboard camera shows the driver refuse to move his car. The driver is seen taking a photo of the ambulance.  The driver ― whose face was blurred in the news report ― reportedly demanded compensation.  The mother of the child was seen pleading with the driver to let the ambulance pass, even attempting to show the child to the driver. Oh Seung-hwan / YonhapPitcher Oh Seung-hwan, who plays for the Hanshin Tigers in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league, has astonished teammates and Japanese media with his strict dietary habits. Oh’s teammate Kazuyuki Kaneda told Japanese daily sports newspaper Sankei Sports about his 34-year-old Korean compatriot’s health-food obsession. Kaneda, who trained with Oh in Guam from Jan. 5 to 16, said the Korean cooks everything he eats. When he cooks eggs, he removes the yolk and only eats the whites.  He never uses salt, Kaneda said. When he goes out, he only drinks a glass of wine. Nicknamed “Stone Buddha” by Korean media, Oh joined his former club, the Samsung Lions, to train in Guam on Saturday.  He will join the Tigers’ training camp in Okinawa next month.

Those interested are required to download Moncast’s app from their smartphones and describe why they want to go on a date with the singer. Moncast will accept applicants until Wednesday and announce the winner on Thursday. Moncast made a short video promoting the event, depicting what it might be like to date Woo-hee.
