Taxi drivers arrested over alleged tourist rip-offs

A Seoul city official cracks down on overcharging taxi drivers at Intcheon International Airport on September 15, 2014. / YonhapBy Lee Min-hyungEight taxi drivers have been arrested for allegedly ripping off foreign passengers.The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency said Thursday that the drivers allegedly had overcharged foreign tourists a total of 7.35 million won ($6,500) since July last year. Police said the drivers had inflated fares at famous tourism spots such as Myeongdong and Dongdaemun.One of the drivers, surnamed Jeon, 50, is suspected of charging a Singaporean tourist 400,000 won ($355) for a 41-kilometer ride from Gimpo International Airport to Incheon International Airport. The sum is 10 times the normal fare.Another driver, surnamed Sung, 34, made 2.36 million won extra by ripping off passengers from Seoul city to Incheon International Airport, according to police.“We will expand our investigation to tourism attractions to prevent a recurrence of similar cases,” a police official said. “We are legally punishing those drivers after creating a tourist poli

/ Courtesy of GmarketBy Rachel LeeForget the great outdoors, more people are camping at home.According to retailer Gmarket, sales of small camping equipment doubled between May 23 and June 22 compared with the same time last year.“‘Veranda camping’ is simple and doesn't cost much, which is the major reason for its rising popularity," Kim Yoon-sang, a company spokesman, said.Sales of mini side tables, parasols and camp beds were up 177, 56 and 35 percent, respectively.Home gardening was also becoming popular, the company said.Sales of garden furniture, outdoor benches and tables have risen 58, 273 and 34 percent, respectively.

Only 49 victims are alive.

A man has been arrested after allegedly driving off while a policeman held a door handle on the car.Busan Jin police said the man, surnamed Yoo, 57, cursed the police officer when he stopped Yoo’s car for an alleged traffic violation on Monday afternoon. Yoo is suspected of driving 20 meters with the policeman holding the handle. The officer suffered facial injuries.Another policeman caught Yoo at the scene.“I did not attempt to escape,” Yoo told police. “I accelerated because I just wanted to get out of the situation.”

Actor-entrepreneur Hong Seok-cheon / Korea Times fileGay celebrity Hong Seok-cheon has disclosed the sales figures of his restaurants.The actor-entrepreneur, 44, appeared on cable network tvN talk show “Taxi” on Tuesday. He said he runs nine restaurants in Itaewon, home to a large expat community in Seoul.“Annual sales of the restaurants are 5 to 7 billion won,” he said. “Monthly sales of some stores reach more than 100 million won.” He said sales varied by season.Hong also said his business was not initially successful.“When I started a restaurant, daily sales were only 38,000 won,” he said. “At that time, I paid my staff with the money I earned as a nightclub DJ.”

He grabs a coffee and heads off in his car.  “I am already in so much pain,” he tells the camera. “It's astounding.”In the clip, he expresses relief when he sits down.“I am getting the impression that my co-workers aren't respecting me much,” he says. “It sucks.
