V-Day to host art auction

By John Redmond V-Day Seoul, a global movement, will host an art auction featuring local and international artists at The Alley, a new gallery and restaurant in Itaewon on Feb. 26 beginning at 9 p.m. In addition to the female genitalia-inspired art works up for silent auction, talented artists will deliver their own rendition of a play, “The Vagina Monologues.” And a DJ will set the mood for good times. V-Day got their name from the play. Guests are encouraged to bring cash for wine, beer and/or auction items. V-Day is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls. It is a catalyst that promotes creative events to increase awareness, raise money and revitalize the spirit of existing anti-violence organizations. The movement generates broader attention for the fight to stop violence against women and girls, including rape, battery, incest, female genital mutilation (FGM) and sexual slavery. Proceeds from the Saturday evening will benefit Korean Unwed Mothers & Families Association (KUMFA) ― the only non-governmental organization that supports unwed mothe

Wine lovers gather to taste exciting wines

By Kariem Hamed Eight wine importers and distributors offered a sample of 30 different specially selected wines at an event held to kick off a new Wine Club meeting monthly at the Grand Hyatt in Seoul. Guests toured the several wine tables in a room overlooking the Han River and the southern Seoul Skyline while nibbling on an appetizing buffet of finger food provided by the hotel. The setup was casual, with a variety of wines presented in an informal atmosphere without the snobbishness usually associated with these types of tastings. The entrance fee of 75,000 won per person (65,000 won for Dine@Hyatt members) may seem hefty, but if you do the math this is actually the best deal you can get for a few hours of wine tasting and food, anywhere in Korea. As a result, this initial event was a complete sellout and an undeniable success. This indicates that interest in wine is once again growing, just like the way the Korean traditional drink of “makgeolli” is experiencing a renaissance. Young professional career men and women alike want to gain more knowledge and try mo

AWB presents Shakespeare works

By John Redmond Actors Without Bard’ers (AWB) will present an evening of classic monologues and sonnets by William Shakespeare entitled “A Search for Truth” at Roofers in Itaewon on Feb. 12. The show begins at 8 p.m. The evening will feature pieces from “Hamlet,” “Richard III,” “Twelfth Night,” “ A Winter's Tale,” and a Valentines treat of a sonnet set to an original musical interpretation. A sonnet is one of several forms of poetry originating in Europe derived from the Occitan word sonet and the Italian word sonetto, both meaning "little song" or "little sound.” The AWB first took to the stage in December 2009, performing a diverse collection of Shakespeare scenes at Roofers bar in Itaewon, Seoul, and has since presented many of the Bard of Avon’s greatest works. The company formed with a mission to address the dearth of English-language Shakespeare performances in the country and it has taken a leading role in bringing more of the playwright's work to audiences. It is an established part of the expat theater community along with such names as BH Productions, Seoul
