Cha Seung-won Connie TalbotBy Kwon Ji-younCelebrities and sports stars continue their efforts to aid the victims of the ferry accident as search-and-rescue operations entered into their eighth day Wednesday in waters off the southwestern island of Jindo.The 6,825-ton ferry Sewol capsized and sank on April 16, taking the lives of about 150 passengers, mostly high school students.Actor Cha Seung-won donated 100 million won to the families of the missing people, Tuesday, through the Community Chest of Korea.The Community Chest stated that it would use the money to send down provisions to the families of the missing who are camped out at a gymnasium in Jindo. Part of the donation will be used to aid search operations.Golfer Choi Kyung-joo, who plays on the PGA tour, also donated 100 million won to Danwon High School in Ansan, which many of the victims attended. A total of 325 students from the school were on their way to Jeju Island for a field trip when the accident occurred.Kim Tae-kyun and Jung Geun-woo of the Hanhwa Eagles donated 50 million won and 10 million won, respectively.

SNU professor becomes editor-in-chief of int'l journal

Dr. Ahn Sung-hoonBy Kwon Ji-younDr. Ahn Sung-hoon, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Seoul National University (SNU), was named editor-in-chief of the International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing-Green Technology (IJPEM-GT), the school said Tuesday. “The IJPEM-GT provides the public with research findings saving energy and eco-environmental manufacturing,” Ahn said. “It will play a role in helping our country lead in green productivity engineering.” Ahn studied aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor until 1992 before going on to earn his master’s and doctoral degrees in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University in 1994 and 1997, respectively. He began teaching at SNU in 2003. Actress Ha Ji-won and actor Jung Il-woo donated 100 million won and 30 million won, respectively, to the families of those who are still missing in the tragic accident that occurred on April 16, when the ferry Sewol capsized and sank off the southwestern island of Jindo. Ha, who is currently shooting the final scenes of the MBC drama “Empress Ki,” has always been exceptionally fond of children, according to her agency. She has in the past donated scholarships to art, music and physical education school students through the KJ Foundation, and sponsored the treatment of visually impaired children at the Severance Hospital. Sanofi appoints new clinical research director

Song Yun-jeongSanofi, a global healthcare leader, has appointed Song Yun-jeong, a former clinical science team leader at the Samsung Institute of Advanced Technology (SIAT), as clinical research director of its Asia Pacific Therapeutic Strategic Unit. “I am pleased to join Sanofi, which actively invests in preclinical research in the Asia Pacific region,” Song said. “I will work to make sure preclinical trials will be carried out for all biopharmaceuticals in Korea and in the Asia Pacific region.” Song studied medicine at Seoul National University from 1995 to 2001 and served as a research scholar at the Washington University School of Medicine until 2003 and as clinical fellow of rheumatology at the U.S. National Institute of Health (NIH) until 2009. She then served as a Henry Metzger scholar in rheumatology at the NIH until 2011 before joining SIAT affiliated with Samsung Electronics.

Female researcher to lead national arboretum

Lee Yu-miBy Kwon Ji-younLee Yu-mi, a researcher at the Korea National Arboretum (KNA), has become the first woman to lead the organization since its establishment in 1967. The Korea Forest Service (KFS), which operates the arboretum, said Sunday that it had appointed Lee as director general of the KNA. “I will work to make sure the KNA becomes a place where people can come to relax, to increase research on biodiversity and to follow through with the preservation and restoration of indigenous plants,” she said. Lee studied forestry at Seoul National University and joined the KFS as a researcher in 1994. She played a significant role in the establishment of the KNA and is an acknowledged expert in systematic botany. The KNA is involved in collecting and searching for domestic and foreign resources to preserve the biodiversity of the Gwangneung Forest in Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province. It also focuses on exchange and cooperation with other organizations within and outside the KFS.

Dr. Choi Han-yongBy Kwon Ji-younDr. Choi Han-yong, a professor of physics at Sungkyunkwan University, was inaugurated president of the Asia Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics, Friday.Choi, an expert in solid state physics, is currently a member of the Korean Superconductivity Society’s board of directors. He has served as dean of the physics department at Sungkyunkwan and on the general council of the APCTP. The APCTP was founded in 1994, and serves the science community in Korea and the Asia-Pacific region with in-house research programs that attract talented young scientists and helps them pursue their own research goals. The center also brings together researchers in the Asia-Pacific area by holding workshops and symposiums, where experts exchange ideas and hold discussions.
