Young ballerino promoted to KNB's principal dancer

Lee Jae-wooBy Kwon Ji-younKang Sue-jin, director of the Korean National Ballet (KNB), has promoted Lee Jae-woo, a soloist ballerino, or soloist, to principal dancer, the highest rank within a professional ballet company. The decision is unprecedented in a number of ways. Kang made the announcement right after the season’s “Swan Lake” performance, with the audience still seated. This is the first time a promotion has been made public on stage. It is also unconventional to promote a soloist to principal dancer without promoting him or her to grand soloist first. “It’s like a dream come true,” said Lee, 24. “I’ve got to try harder now.” Lee, who studied at the Korea National University of Arts, is the tallest ballerino in the company, standing 195 centimeters tall. According to a KNB official, Lee’s technique is close to perfect, and his acting is remarkable. While relatively short, his resume has been marked by impressive achievements. From 2009 to 2011, he won two silvers and a gold at the Dong-A Dance Competition, and in 201

Herb expert raising interests in greens

Oh Heon-sik, editor of the Farmers NewspaperBy Ko Dong-hwanA journalist is gaining fame as an herb expert. He recently wrote a book, “Mountain Herbs, Ground Herbs,” a colorful short encyclopedia about herbs targeting young readers.“Many illustrated plant books are already out there in stores, but most of them scare away readers with textbook-style rigidness,” said Oh Heon-sik, an editor of the Farmers Newspaper.Published by Non Jang, which specializes in children’s content, the book is well-balanced between illustrations, photographs and text written in an easy, storytelling style.Oh’s book is easy to read and fun to flip through. But publishing a non-challenging, visually attractive book wasn’t his primary goal.He said since children’s eating habits often determine their diets for the rest of their lives, they should be introduced to healthier foods like herbs.“My children don’t know much about herbs,” said Oh in an interview with The Korea Times on Tuesday. He is the father of two sons in middle school.“They pro

'Keep your life rolling'

Lee Hyun-aBy Park Si-sooBringing retirees back to work is one of the primary goals of President Park Geun-hye, who is a firm believer of the adage, “A job is the best form of welfare.”In this vein, the government is pressing the public and private sectors to rehire experienced retirees, including women who quit their job for childcare.Yet this policy seems unlikely to benefit skilled housewives who have no working experiences but want to become economically productive. If so, how will their skills be used? Lee Hyun-a may have an answer.‘Do what you can do well’Lee seemed to be full of confidence. Styled with a figure-hugging ivory shirt and faded jeans, she was sitting upright with legs crossed at a coffee shop in Yeoksam, Seoul, while gazing out through a glass wall. Her clear eyes, flawless facial skin and, above all, coke bottle-shaped body line well demonstrated her physical healthiness.By appearance, it’s not an exaggeration to assume she is in her late 30s or early 40s.Let’s check her profile to avoid being fooled further by her “misleadi
