WWF-Korea head pledges to support environmental challenges

Former Foreign Minister Hong Soon-youngBy Kang Hyun-kyungFormer Foreign Minister Hong Soon-young died of natural causes, Wednesday. He was 77. Hong served as foreign minister from 1998 to 2000 during the Kim Dae-jung administration.He later served as unification minister and as ambassador to China, Russia, Germany, Pakistan and Malaysia. He began his career as a diplomat in 1961 when he joined the foreign ministry after passing the state civil service exam.He leaves behind two sons. Plastic surgery society has new chief

Kim Woo-seobDr. Kim Woo-seob, a professor of plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Chung-Ang University School of Medicine, was appointed president of the Korean Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (KSAPS), Sunday. He will take office in May for a two-year term. Kim studied medicine at Chung-Ang, and has served as a research fellow at Harvard Medical School. He is currently chairman of the Korean Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons’ public relations committee, and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons. The KSAPS, founded in 1985, is an organization of some 1,700 experts who have been certified by the Korean Board of Plastic Surgery.

Lyn, left, and Lee SuSingers Lyn and Lee Su, of the rock band MC the Max, will tie the knot in September, according to their agency, Music & New, Tuesday. Lee Su confirmed the news through Twitter soon after. The two have been dating since 2012 and made public their relationship a year ago. The 33-year-olds will be wed at a hotel in Yeouido on Sept. 19. They reportedly have known each other for some 10 years, and started dating when Lee Su signed a contract with Lyn’s agency in 2012. Lyn debuted in 2001 and has since become a recognized vocalist. She has dedicated one of her songs to Lee Su. Lee Su made his debut as a member of the rock band Moon Child in 2000, and then released his first album with MC the Max in 2002.

A Malaysia-based illustrator used a playful scribbling technique to produce his black and white portraits of celebrities and fictional characters, photo entertainment website the Chive said Monday.Vince Low first discovered his lively process while doodling in his sketchbook. He realized that his notes were actually making their ways to worthwhile final products.Low said, “I knew that it would be a challenge for me to scribble out and capture the souls and characters of those people in the portraits. Neuroradiology society has new chief

Kim Bum-sooDr. Kim Bum-soo, an associate professor of radiology at the Catholic University of Korea (CUK) Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, was appointed president of the Korean Society of Interventional Neuroradiology (KSIN), the university announced Monday. He will serve a two-year term. “I will work to increase exchange with related organizations,” he pledged. Kim studied medicine at CUK and in 1992 became a specialist in diagnostic radiology. In 1997, he served as a visiting fellow at the University of Hamburg in Germany, and in 2001, as a research fellow at the University of Toronto in Canada. He is a member of the Korean Society of Radiology, the Korean Society of Magnetic Resonance in Medicine and the European Society of Radiology. The KSIN was established in 1994 and has as its members some 200 experts in interventional neuroradiology.

Professor to serve on int'l competition jury

Kim Dae-jinKim Dae-jin, a professor of instrumental music at the Korea National University of Arts (K-arts), has become the first Korean to serve on the jury of the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition, according to K-arts, Monday. Kim studied piano at the Juilliard School, and has since won a number of awards, including the Artist of the Year Award, conferred by the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Sports in 2005; the Nanpa music award in 1987; the Kumho Teacher’s Award in 2005 and 2007; and first prize in the Robert Casadesus International Competition. He has also served as director of the Kumho Chamber Music Society. The Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition was established in 1974 and has held some 13 competitions, where 600 pianists have competed and 43 have won prizes. It is an international piano competition that specializes in music championed by Arthur Rubinstein, a Polish-American classical pianist.
