(242) Fortune lines in your palms

By Janet Shin According to those that believe it, our palms reveal various aspects of our lives. Just as perhaps we can read a person’s destiny by their face, we can also read our palms to get certain answers about our fate. It is because of the significant activities we perform with our hands ― studying, writing, working, praying and so on. They are not only routine deeds but acts of the mind and soul. We read a book, write a letter, make handiwork and play musical instruments with all our heart. We also hold others hands sharing our affection, shake hands with each other, pinkie-swear, avow. In the moments of these activities, our mind and soul convey meaningful energy through our hands. What can be read by our palm lines? Instead of consulting a fortune teller, you might want to know about your destiny immediately. You might be diffident for fear of knowing a portent. You want to credit yourself that either it will be a success or a failure, rather than letting the fortune teller read your life. Spread your palms to read how the lines are wrinkled. Many people are c

Couples prefer simpler weddings

A bride and groom exchange a wedding vow during the ceremony held without an officiator. Some young couples have their fathers preside over the ceremony for a simpler wedding. / Korea Times fileBy Kwon Ji-youn, Yoon Sung-won, Park Jin-hai Although many Korean couples still prefer the traditional extravagant wedding attended by several hundred guests, more Koreans have become open to holding a simpler ceremony. This gradual shift suggests younger generations are placing more importance on the meaning of marriage rather than to the vanity and formality. The continuing economic slump and a changing view about marriage among young Koreans have played their parts. The simpler, the better According to a survey conducted earlier this year by the Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Institute for Health and Social Affairs, 40.4 percent of men and 19.4 percent of women replied that economic instability was holding them back from tying the knot. And when couples do get married, they have opted for custom weddings that are simpler and less expensive. They try to minimize cos

Dental advice for moms

By Hong Kee-sang In my previous columns, I attempted to provide a better understanding of how children’s teeth develop decay. In today’s column, I outline practical steps parents can take to protect their children’s teeth. 1. Oral hygiene Children need to brush their teeth three times a day. When brushing after breakfast and after lunch, the quality of the brushing isn’t very important — just the fact that the children are brushing their teeth is sufficient. When brushing before bed time, however, meticulous cleaning is essential. Parents of younger children such as infants and toddlers should both floss and brush their children’s teeth. On the other hand, parents of slightly older children such as those in kindergarten or elementary school should floss their children’s teeth and then let the children brush on their own. However, parents should check the quality of their children’s brushing by having the children lie down on the floor, and then, sitting behind their children’s heads (as dentists do at the clinic), lo

Is morning sickness fuss during pregnancy?

By Lee Hye-junLate one night in the snowy winter, a pregnant woman had a sudden craving for strawberries. She told her husband she had to have some RIGHT NOW. Her husband wondered around in the freezing cold looking for strawberries. After hours, he miraculously found a fruit seller. He bought a big basket of strawberries and hurried back home. His wife took a small bite and said “That was good. Now put it away, the smell is disgusting me.”Sounds familiar? It is commonly used to describe an agony of a poor husband who has a particularly difficult pregnant wife.Nearly 70 to 80 percent of pregnant women suffer from morning sickness. Morning sickness is not an accurate term since nausea and vomiting usually continue throughout the day, although they tend to be worse in the morning. It mostly begins within four weeks after the last menstrual period and peaks at approximately nine weeks. For half of women it ends by 14 weeks and 90 percent by 22 weeks.I was quite shocked talking to one of my friends. She was a lucky lady who experienced no morning sickness during two pregnanci

Overactive bladder syndrome seriously degrading quality of life

By Lee Sung-hun There are an unfortunately large number of people who are inconvenienced by frequent urination. Some of them are overly concerned about where toilets are when they have to conduct a meeting away from their normal surroundings. Others have experienced wetting their underwear to a varying degree because they urinated just before pulling their pants down in the toilet. Others even worry about drinking water or soda while they are outside, fearing that they might need to look for a place to relieve their needs. Such people may be suffering from overactive bladder (OAB) syndrome.OAB generally designates the conditions where even a small amount of urine forces the patient to urinate due to over-sensitivity. The name may be unfamiliar to the general public, but it is estimated that approximately 6 million Koreans are suffering from OAB syndrome, about 12.2 percent of the entire population. When this is compared to diabetes, which affects 9.8 percent of the population, this is certainly not a rare illness.OAB syndrome is denoted by urinary urgency (sudden and abrupt need

Changing wisdom on wisdom teeth

By Yoon Ja-youngWisdom teeth have been regarded as useless, if not bothersome, as people generally think they only cause cavities and pain. According to dentists, however, the tooth can work as good substitute for a dental implant usually made of titanium. The wisdom tooth usually appears at around 20 years of age. It is called “Sarangni,” or love tooth in Korea, meaning that the tooth appears when people are around the age to know about love. They are often angled forward, causing pain. According to a research by Noreen von Cramon-Taubadel, an anthropologist at the University of Kent in England, it has to do with evolution. Our ancestors used to have longer jawbones as they ate raw and unprocessed, hard items. As people came to have cooked and softer food, however, our jawbones became shorter, not enough to accommodate the many teeth we previously needed.Wisdom teeth are usually taken out, over concerns about cavities or gum disease, especially when the tooth is angled. In an era where many people lose teeth due to sweets, however, these wisdom teeth can be useful, accord

Healing recipes Mini eggplant pizza

/ Courtesy of Media WillIn summer, we have plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Eggplants are of especially good quality during this season and they are also cheap.Eggplant is composed of 93 percent water, protein, carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus, vitamin A and vitamin C. Eggplants are also effective in suppressing cancer, especially when they are cooked. They lower cholesterol in blood, and limit cholesterol levels from rising when taken with greasy food. The pigments in eggplants clean blood because they absorb fat and melt the residues in blood vessels. “Anthocyanin,” which is in eggplants, grapes, and blueberries purple, relieves the fatigue of the eyes and is thus helpful for people who work on computers for a long time.In Korean Oriental medicine, eggplants are considered to be good for the digestive organs, kidneys and and helpful in preventing colon cancer. As eggplant is considered to have a cooling effect on the body in Oriental medicine, it is recommended for people who have high body temperatures. By using vegetable oil when cooking eggplants, one can take

Prostatic hyperplasia patients up

By Yoon Ja-youngBenign prostatic hyperplasia, or the enlargement of the gland surrounding the urethra, is increasingly affecting men in the country. The Korean Prostate Society announced that it has noticed steep surge in patients after analyzing data from Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service and the National Health Insurance Service. The prostate, which is found only in men, is essential for procreation because it secretes fluid essential for the protection of sperm. However, many go through benign enlargement of the prostate, which makes it hard to urinate. These symptoms are very common, especially among elderly men, according to the Korean Prostate Society, which says that it is found in around 50 percent of those in their 50s, 60 percent of those in their 60s, and 80 percent of those in their 80s or older.“As the average age in Korea is rapidly advancing and people come to value quality of life, prostatic hyperplasia will rise as one of the most important health issues,” said Prof. Lee Kyung-seop of Dongguk University College of Medicine, who is president o

Kwang Dong launches osteoporosis injection

Kwang Dong Pharmaceutical announced the availability of “Ibanpos,” an osteoporosis treatment injection for menopausal women. After menopause, many women experience a decrease of minerals in their bones due to the lack of estrogen, a female hormone. This leads to osteoporosis, or porous bone, which makes them prone to fractures. The company said Ibanpos prevents and treats osteoporosis by stopping calcium loss and increasing mineral adsorption in the bones. “Unlike oral medicines, Ibanpos needs only four injections a year,” a company spokesperson said.
