VIDEO A day of a Korean psychiatrist living in a country that won't admit it needs one

South Korea has held the highest suicide rate in the OECD for years — more than double the global average. It also has one of the lowest doctor-to-patient ratios in the developed world. The math is grim, and well-documented. What it doesn't explain is why so many Koreans who need help still won't walk through a psychiatrist's door. The reason often comes down to two letters and a number. In Korea's national health insurance system, every psychiatric visit is logged under an "F code" — the classification used for mental and behavioral disorders. F32 for depression. F41 for anxiety. F90 for ADHD. The codes are protected by medical confidentiality law and cannot be shared without the patient's consent. And yet the fear of the F code is one of the most persistent reasons Koreans avoid psychiatric care. Patients worry the code will resurface — in a future insurance application, a background check, some unspecified moment where a single record might cost them something. VIDEO Road collapse in Seoul's Gangnam District causes chaos

By Kim Kang-minRepairs are underway after part of a roadway collapsed leaving a 3-meter-deep hole with a diameter of 1 meter in the middle of Bongeunsa-ro, Gangnam District, Seoul, Sept. 12. According to the police and Gangnam District Office, the incident occurred at around 10:45 a.m. on the road in front of exit 8 of Eonju Station on Seoul Subway Line 9. A removalist truck traveling on the road partially fell into the hole. There were no casualties. It is reported that the hole formed due to road weakening caused by damage to a nearby water pipe.

VIDEO Monsoon rains to soak entire nation until Monday

By Kim Kang-minThe state weather agency issued a heavy rain watch for Seoul, central, and southern parts of the country on Sunday, with authorities on high alert for potential additional damage from torrential rains. The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) forecasted up to 100 millimeters of rain for the Seoul metropolitan area and issued a heavy rain watch for Incheon since Saturday. The KMA expanded the advisory to six more areas in South Chungcheong and issued it for Cheorwon, Hwacheon in Gangwon Province, and Gunsan in North Jeolla Province.Heavy rain advisories are triggered by expected precipitation of over 60 mm in three hours or 110 mm in 12 hours. The government raised the disaster readiness alert to level 2 on Saturday due to concerns about damage from heavy downpours. The country has been affected by torrential rains since early this month, leading to floods, landslides, and 47 fatalities, with three still missing.
