Impressive Korea starts World Cup with a bang

Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 on Thursday evening (local time) in Guadalajara to start the 2026 World Cup with a deserved win, even if it was touch and go for a while. Some missed chances meant that for a while, it looked like the points were slipping away, but in the end it was a fine performance from coach Hong Myung-bo’s men. The Taegeuk Warriors' first opening win at the World Cup since 2010 sets them up nicely to get out Group A and into the knockout stages. The three points are welcome, but so is the fact that Korea played some exciting and attractive soccer, in contrast to the physical Czechs who mostly threatened from set pieces. Hwang In-beom was the star; the midfielder scored a fine equalizer and then assisted Oh Hyeon-gyu for the winning goal. After all the pretournament criticism and uncertainty, there were big smiles on the faces of the Korean players and their army of fans in Mexico. The first half belonged to the 2002 semifinalists. Lee Kang-in was pulling the strings going forward, picking out passes and finding space. Son Heung-min is still th

IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

By T.J. Tomasi The trauma caused by torque, or the sheering force of a golf swing on the back and neck, builds up over time. It's like a stopped-up sink ― drip, drip, drip with no problem, but then comes that last drip and the overflow starts. You've seen the effect a bad back can have on great players like Tiger Woods and Jason Day, and these are golfers who have access to the best trainers and physical therapists in the business. So what chance do you, of limited budget, have? The problem is that without doing specific exercises, it's hard to keep the muscles responsible for stabilizing the spine and core in shape. Sitting for long periods is bad enough, but if you don't have an exercise program, the disadvantages multiply until the damaged system shuts itself, and your golf game, down ― sometimes for good.Low back pain is the No. 1 injury sustained by golfers, according to the journal Sports Health, accounting for up to 35 percent of all injuries. And here's a stunner ― “The direct annual costs of back pain, as related to physician services, medical devices, medications,

Is MLB discriminating against Korean players?

Criticism mounting over plan to cap posting feeBy Baek Byung-yeulWith the highest number of Korean players playing for Major League Baseball (MLB) teams this season, criticism is mounting over the move to put a posting fee cap of $8 million on Korean players, about 40 percent of that for Japanese players.According to the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), the MLB Commissioner’s Office suggested the posting fee cap for Korean players. The governing body of the MLB said that nothing has been decided yet and it will further discuss the issue with the KBO teams and the KBO players’ union. The KBO must respond to the MLB by May 15.Since 2001, MLB teams have had four days to submit their bids to win 30-day-long exclusive rights to negotiate with a KBO player. The MLB and Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB) agreed on a posting cap of $20 million in 2013. The first case of the limit was applied to Masahiro Tanaka’s transfer when the New York Yankees paid the $20 million posting fee to the Japanese pitcherformer team, the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles.Though there

Swing your hands and club in a circle

By Kim Jeong-kyooThe golf swing is a circle. You need to rotate your body and swing your arms up while hinging your wrists. Your body motion is incorrect if your clubhead does not travel in a circle. You first need to grip the club so your hands hinge up and down, not sideways. You need to hinge your wrists the way you would to swing a mini-sledgehammer. The most natural way for your wrists to hinge is “straight up and down.” You need to avoid hinging your wrists sideways. That places too much strain on your hands, restricting your wrist hinge. To hinge your wrists freely or strongly, you need to cock your wrists up and down. That allows you to hit your ball more powerfully.Typically, you’d better have a strong left hand grip. Let the V created by your thumb and forefinger point toward your right shoulder, or a touch below it. Grip your club with your left hand so the V between your thumb and forefinger points toward your chin. But experiment with whatever grip helps you hinge your club correctly. Usually, your left hand rotates your club, your right hand taking care
