Impressive Korea starts World Cup with a bang

Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 on Thursday evening (local time) in Guadalajara to start the 2026 World Cup with a deserved win, even if it was touch and go for a while. Some missed chances meant that for a while, it looked like the points were slipping away, but in the end it was a fine performance from coach Hong Myung-bo’s men. The Taegeuk Warriors' first opening win at the World Cup since 2010 sets them up nicely to get out Group A and into the knockout stages. The three points are welcome, but so is the fact that Korea played some exciting and attractive soccer, in contrast to the physical Czechs who mostly threatened from set pieces. Hwang In-beom was the star; the midfielder scored a fine equalizer and then assisted Oh Hyeon-gyu for the winning goal. After all the pretournament criticism and uncertainty, there were big smiles on the faces of the Korean players and their army of fans in Mexico. The first half belonged to the 2002 semifinalists. Lee Kang-in was pulling the strings going forward, picking out passes and finding space. Son Heung-min is still th

Feel your club shaft bend to hit powerful shots

By Kim Jeong-kyooYour setup is critical to solid ball-strikes. There is no way you can enjoy powerful shots unless you set up properly. Typically, you need to keep your right foot square, with your left toe flared out about 30 to 45 degrees. A square right foot allows you to keep your lower body remaining passive during the swing. However, if you want to turn more on the backswing, you’d better flare your right foot. That allows you to turn freely and fully. Flaring your left foot helps you better clear your lower body through impact.Flex your knees only slightly to create a balanced, athletic posture. If you want to make a soft draw your workhorse, you’d better adopt a touch strong grip. Your Vs formed between your thumbs and forefingers need to stay parallel and point to your right shoulder. You need to grip your club so your right-forefinger is under the handle of your club. That helps you square your clubface easily through your ball.Keep your left arm straight and your right arm soft for a smooth takeaway. You need to tilt your spine to the right away from the target.

No decision yet on S. Korea's hosting of WBC games: MLB

No decision has been reached on whether South Korea will host World Baseball Classic (WBC) games next year, despite a recent statement by an American broadcaster, a senior Major League Baseball (MLB) official said Wednesday.During the Fox Sports telecast of the game between the Minnesota Twins and the Milwaukee Brewers on Monday (local time), Dick Bremer, the Twins' play-by-play man, declared, "The WBC, we're heading to Korea. That is our first stop in the WBC (in 2017)." He made the comment while discussing the Twins' South Korean designated hitter/first baseman, Park Byung-ho.Responding to an email inquiry by Yonhap News Agency, Chris Park, MLB's senior vice president of growth, strategy and international, wrote, "It sounds like the broadcaster got ahead of himself."We have not made any announcements on WBC venues," added Park, who is responsible for overseeing MLB's international business initiatives, including the WBC. "We are certainly giving the KBO bid serious consideration but have not made any decisions (at) this point."Park was referring to the Korea Baseball Organization,

Kim Nam-il gets new job at national football body

Kim Nam-il, an integral member of the semifinalist South Korean team at the 2002 FIFA World Cup, will join a task force for the nation's football industry, the Korea Football Association (KFA) said on Tuesday. The KFA said that Kim, who recently decided to end his playing career, will be a member of its Strategic Planning for Future Task Force that rolls out productive plans for South Korean football. The KFA technical committee chief Lee Yong-soo is the leader of the task force."Kim's abundant experience in various football leagues will help us design future plans for South Korean football," Lee said. "We have big expectations for Kim who was on the pitch until recently."Kim recently told Yonhap News Agency via phone that he decided to hang up his boots. He had been searching for a club since January after his contract with Kyoto Sanga FC in the second-tier Japanese league expired last year, but couldn't find any suitors. Struggling Eagles continue losing streak

The Hanwha Eagles players walk from the dugout after losing to the LG Twins at the Hanwha Life Eagles Park in Daejeon, Sunday.  / Yonhap By Baek Byung-yeul The games last weekend apparently weren’t what the Hanwha Eagles fans wanted to see.Three weeks into the new baseball season and the Eagles are last among the ten KBO teams, winning only two games while losing 11.Last week was probably the beginning of the worst season for the Daejeon-based team. The Eagles hosted two Seoul-based teams ― the Doosan Bears during the week and the LG Twins on the weekend ― but couldn’t pick up a win in the five games. The Eagles allowed 56 runs in the last five games and they might have extended their losing streak to six if the Saturday game against the Twins hadn’t been canceled due to rain. What is worse is that the team suffered a huge margin of defeat after several coaches were shuffled around Wednesday ― the team took a 17-2 drubbing from the Bears, Thursday, and an 18-2 loss against the Twins, n Friday.Team manager Kim Sung-keun said the Eagle

KBO's Hanwha Eagles in complete disarray

The Hanwha Eagles have gone back to being their old selves in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), and it's not a good thing, if you know the recent history of this club. The Eagles have lost five straight games to drop to 2-11 in the young season, easily the worst record in the 10-team league. They lost the first two games of the season in extra innings and had a four-game slide earlier this month before dropping five in a row over the past week.To their faithful, the Eagles' woes early this season serve as a painful reminder of some awful seasons of the recent past. They posted the KBO's worst record in 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014, winning more than 50 games just once out of those four seasons. This year, only four games separate the first-place Doosan Bears and the ninth-place Kia Tigers. The Eagles are sitting 7.5 games back of the Bears.Their counting stats have been predictably dismal. No team has scored fewer runs (47) and given up more runs (103) in 2016. They've allowed 10 or more runs in three games already, including the back-to-back losses to the Bears and the LG Twins last

Stielike warns it won't be easy for Euro-stars

Tottenham Hotspur’s Son Heung-min, center, takes on Manchester United’s Chris Smalling, right, during the English Premier League football match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United at White Hart Lane in London, Britain, Sunday.  / EPA-YonhapBy John DuerdenThe dust has settled on the draw for the 2018 World Cup for South Korea. Coach Uli Stielike knows exactly which teams they will face ― China, Iran, Qatar, Uzbekistan and Syria ― and when: it all starts on September 1, 2016, and ends September 5, 2017. Now he has to start thinking about his team. His mission is simple: to finish in the top two in the group and as this is the World Cup, the boss will want to field his strongest team in every game. Some of the team's best are in Europe. There is the English Premier League trio of captain Ki Sung-yueng at Swansea City, Lee Chung-yong at Crystal Palace and Son Heung-min at Tottenham Hotpsur. There are more in Germany: Park Joo-ho at Borussia Dortmund, Hong Jeong-ho, Koo Ja-cheol and Ji Dong-won at Augsburg and Kim Jin-soo with Hoffenheim. Most of t
