Impressive Korea starts World Cup with a bang

Korea came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 on Thursday evening (local time) in Guadalajara to start the 2026 World Cup with a deserved win, even if it was touch and go for a while. Some missed chances meant that for a while, it looked like the points were slipping away, but in the end it was a fine performance from coach Hong Myung-bo’s men. The Taegeuk Warriors' first opening win at the World Cup since 2010 sets them up nicely to get out Group A and into the knockout stages. The three points are welcome, but so is the fact that Korea played some exciting and attractive soccer, in contrast to the physical Czechs who mostly threatened from set pieces. Hwang In-beom was the star; the midfielder scored a fine equalizer and then assisted Oh Hyeon-gyu for the winning goal. After all the pretournament criticism and uncertainty, there were big smiles on the faces of the Korean players and their army of fans in Mexico. The first half belonged to the 2002 semifinalists. Lee Kang-in was pulling the strings going forward, picking out passes and finding space. Son Heung-min is still th

Rio just around corner for football stars

The Korean national football team’s Son Heung-min celebrates after scoring a goal in the Asian Cup quarterfinal match against Uzbekistan at the Rectangular Stadium, Melbourne, Australia, Jan. 22, 2015.The 23-year-old football star is likely to be included on the country’s Olympic football team, as three overage players are being allowed to compete. / YonhapBy John Duerden On Wednesday, we will be just 100 days from the start of the 2016 Rio Olympics. For those of a football persuasion, it is time to start thinking seriously about the chances of South Korea’s men ― the women did not manage to qualify ― and whether they can match the heroics of the 2012 vintage.Four years earlier in London, the young Taegeuk Warriors thrilled the nation by winning bronze. The fact it came courtesy of a 2-0 win over Japan was a bonus. It also gave the roster an exemption from mandatory military service. This time, the head coach is Shin Tae-yon, not Hong Myong-bo. Shin led Seongnam to the 2010 Asian Champions League but a medal in Brazil would be another fine addition to

An official at her agency, Sportizen, said since the JTBC Founders Cup tournament in mid-March, Jang had been suffering from blurred vision, dizziness and vomiting, and had also experienced trouble sleeping."She was treated at a U.S. hospital but made no progress," the official added. "We're considering having her visit a Korean hospital. We'll have to monitor her condition before deciding on her next event."Jang has reportedly been under a great deal of stress since a bizarre off-field incident involving a fellow South Korean LPGA player Chun In-gee in early March. When both golfers were traveling to Singapore for the HSBC Women's Champions, a bag belonging to Jang's father tumbled down an escalator at Changi Airport and hit Chun in the lower back.Chun was forced to miss a month of action with back problems,

Scoreless innings streak snapped for Cardinals' Oh Seung-hwan

Oh Seung-hwan of the St. Louis Cardinals gave up his first two runs of the season Wednesday against the Chicago Cubs. The South Korean right-hander saw his scoreless innings streak snapped at eight innings, after allowing two runs in the top of the eighth inning on a rainy day at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.Oh hadn't given up a run in 7 2/3 innings in seven appearances prior to this game.Oh relieved starter Carlos Martinez to start the eighth, with the Cardinals ahead 4-1. The game was delayed by more than three hours after the top of the seventh, and Oh looked shaky out of the gate.He gave up an infield hit to Dexter Fowler, the first batter of the inning, and then walked Jason Heyward on seven pitches.Ben Zobrist lined out to right field, with Fowler moving to third on the play.Anthony Rizzo then singled to right to drive in a run, the first earned run given up by Oh this season. With runners still at the corners with one out, Oh got Kris Bryant to hit a grounder to second, but the Cards' infield could only get the force at second, allowing Heyward to score the second run of the innin
