Korean midfielder happy to draw attention from opponents

ZAPOPAN, Mexico — After being named the Player of the Match in a 2-1 victory over Czechia last week by recording a goal and an assist, Korean midfielder Hwang In-beom is expected to draw plenty of attention from Mexico in their upcoming match. And it suits Hwang just fine. "I hope they pay a lot of attention to me," Hwang said Wednesday at the prematch press conference at Estadio Guadalajara in Zapopan, western Mexico, the site of the Group A match showdown between the two countries at 7 p.m. Thursday (local time), or 10 a.m. Friday (Korean time). "We have many players that are better than I am, and they will end up getting opportunities if the focus is on me," Hwang added. "I have faith that our attackers will capitalize on their chances. The important thing for us is to execute our plans to the best of our abilities." Korea went down in the second half against Czechia before Hwang netted the equalizer and then set up the go-ahead goal. But Hwang said he isn't content with just winning the first match. "I tried to forget about the first win as quickly as possible and instead focus on t

Partial Rio Olympics ban on Russia to have little impact on Korea

A recent decision by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) not to issue a complete ban on Russia from the Rio de Janeiro Summer Games will likely have little impact on Korea's medal race. The IOC on Sunday defied growing calls from the anti-doping community to exclude the whole Russian delegation from Rio amid allegations of state-sponsored doping, and instead passed the ball to individual sports federations. Thomas Bach, the IOC president, said those international governing bodies will have the authority to exclude Russian athletes as they see fit.The track and field team has already been banned by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) for rampant doping, while the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) imposed a one-year suspension on Russia in June.Korea, though, isn't expected to contend for medals in those events, and it will only compete with Russia for medals in sports that likely won't be banned, thus limiting the impact of the IOC's decision.A complete ban would have affected rhythmic gymnastics a great deal, where Korea's Son Yeon-jae will g

Park Chu-young is back into his groove

FC Seoul’s Park Chu-young, second from left, celebrates after scoring a goal in a K League football match against Incheon United, July 17. / YonhapBy John DuerdenWhen Park Chu-young let the ball fly from about 25 meters on July 17 and scored one of the goals of the 2016 K-League Classic season, surely it made fans of teams other than FC Seoul smile. The striker has had a tough few years in football and as he celebrated at the home of Incheon United with his Seoul teammates (not with his usual kneeling prayer ceremony but with a football up the shirt to celebrate the new arrivals to the families of teammates Osmar Barba and Shim Woo-yeon), he looked happier on the pitch than he has done for some time. He is finally back in his groove.Park turned 31 earlier this month and has the maturity and experience to enjoy what is turning into a good season ― a good season without the need to make it into anything more.If anyone knows the perils and pitfalls of hype then it is the Daegu native who was hailed as a star by the time he started his professional career in 2005. By Baek Byung-yeulSamsung Lions’ pitcher An Ji-man, 32, has been investigated for his alleged involvement in opening an illegal gambling site, prosecutors said, Wednesday. The Daegu District Prosecutors’ Office said the pro baseball pitcher of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) was recently summoned for questioning over allegations that he financed the operation of an illegal online gambling site run by his acquaintance. According to the local prosecutors’ office, An denied the accusations, saying he lent some money to his friend in order to help him open a restaurant.Besides being involved in opening an illegal gambling site, An faces another investigation. IT'S GOOD FOR YOUR GAME

Adjust your iron swing for true value By T.J. Tomasi Most good iron players use a three-quarter swing to make the solid, clean contact that produces the distance and direction built into the club at the factory. It’s termed the “true value of the club,” and each of your irons has a different true value because the length varies (usually by a half-inch), as does the clubface loft (usually by 4 degrees). Thus, depending on your swing speed, the true value of your 5-iron might be 170 yards, give or take, while your 8-iron flies about 140 yards.Since most iron sets have 4 degrees of loft between each club, and each degree equates to roughly 2 1/2 yards, there is about a 10-yard difference between each of your irons. To determine the true value of each iron, simply measure how far your normal swing sends an 8-iron, then add or subtract 10 yards. If your 8 flies 140 yards (pace it off or use a range finder), then the 9-iron flies 130 and your 7 goes 150.These differences in length and loft allow you to cover adequately most of the distances you face during a rou
