Heroes, Bears make changes with foreign players

Two Korean baseball clubs made changes with their foreign players Monday, with a former league home run leader switching teams midseason. The Kiwoom Heroes said they will pick up former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) home run king Matt Davidson, who was released by another KBO team, NC Dinos, over the weekend. To make room for Davidson, the Heroes released their American starting pitcher Nathan Wiles. KBO teams are each allowed to carry three non-Asian foreign players, with a maximum two pitchers. Clubs typically sign two starting pitchers and one position player from overseas, but the Heroes have elected to go with two hitters and one pitcher, as Davidson joins Keston Hiura in the lineup while Raul Alcantara will be the lone non-Asian pitcher. The Heroes previously bucked the trend at the start of last season, when they had outfielders Yasiel Puig and Ruben Cardenas, along with pitcher Kenny Rosenberg. Davidson led the KBO with 46 home runs in 131 games in 2024, his first campaign in Korea. He followed that up with 36 home runs last year in 112 games. Davidson had eight homers in 63 ga

Lee Il-hee falls short of 1st LPGA title in 12 years

Korean veteran Lee Il-hee has come up just short of ending her 12-year LPGA title drought. Lee finished as the runner-up to Jennifer Kupcho of the United States by one stroke at the ShopRite LPGA Classic at Seaview Golf Club's Bay Course in Galloway, New Jersey, on Sunday (local time). A birdie-birdie finish on the par-71 course was not enough as Lee ended at 14-under 199, with Kupcho draining a clutch birdie putt on the closing hole to finish at 15-under 198 and claim her first win in three years. Lee had six birdies — five of them on the back nine — and three bogeys for a 68 in the final round. The 36-year-old is winless since earning her first career win at the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic in May 2013. She earned US$162,834 for her effort, her first paycheck on the LPGA Tour since 2023. Lee came into this tournament ranked No. 1,426 in the world rankings. At 11-under through 36 holes, Lee took a one-stroke lead into the final round over four players, including three major champions: Kupcho, the 2022 Chevron Championship winner; Mao Saigo of Japan, who won the 2025 Chevron Champi

This win is for Americans who look like me, says French Open champion Gauff

PARIS — Newly-crowned French Open champion Coco Gauff, the first Black American to win the title in a decade, said on Saturday her victory in Paris was for people back home who looked like her and struggled amid ongoing political turmoil. Gauff battled from a set down to beat Aryna Sabalenka 6-7(5) 6-2 6-4 and lift her first French Open crown and her second Grand Slam title after the 2023 U.S. Open. She is the first Black American to win the French Open since Serena Williams in 2015. "It means a lot (to win the title), and obviously there's a lot going on in our country right now with things -- like, everything, yeah. I'm sure you guys know," she said, smiling but without elaborating further. "But just to be able to be a representation of that and a representation of, I guess, people that look like me in America who maybe don't feel as supported during this time period, and so just being that reflection of hope and light for those people." There has been ongoing political turmoil in the United States following the election of President Donald Trump last year. Trump's first few months in

What Trump travel ban means for 2026 World Cup, 2028 Olympics

GENEVA — U.S. President Donald Trump often says the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Los Angeles Olympics are among the events he is most excited about in his second term. Yet there is significant uncertainty regarding visa policies for foreign visitors planning trips to the U.S. for the two biggest events in sports. Trump’s latest travel ban on citizens from 12 countries added new questions about the impact on the World Cup and the Summer Olympics, which depend on hosts opening their doors to the world. Here’s a look at the potential effects of the travel ban on those events. When Sunday ticks over to Monday, citizens of 12 countries will be banned from entering the U.S. They are Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, the Republic of Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen. Tighter restrictions will apply to visitors from seven more: Burundi, Cuba, Laos, Sierra Leone, Togo, Turkmenistan and Venezuela. Trump said some countries had “deficient” screening and vetting processes or have historically refused to take back their own citizens. Iran, a soccer power in As

S. Korea coach looking to test young players ahead of World Cup

With South Korea having locked down their World Cup berth early, head coach Hong Myung-bo said Friday he will use the team's one final qualifying match to test young and unproven players. Hong and the rest of the team received a hero's welcome home at Incheon International Airport, just west of Seoul, on Friday evening, some 12 hours after securing their 2026 World Cup ticket by beating Iraq 2-0 in Basra, southern Iraq, in their latest qualifying match. South Korea will compete in their 11th consecutive World Cup, a streak bettered by only Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy and Spain. South Korea will host Kuwait in Seoul on Tuesday to wrap up Group B play in the third round of the Asian qualifiers. After grabbing their World Cup spot in a hostile environment, the South Korean players will likely be in for a celebratory night in front of home fans in an otherwise inconsequential match. To Hong, though, the match will still be an important occasion as he hopes to get a closer look at some inexperienced players in a national team setting. "We will try our best in that match. And it's an oppo

Eagles starter Ryu Hyun-jin out with adductor discomfort

Hanwha Eagles starting pitcher Ryu Hyun-jin has been ruled out for at least 10 days with discomfort in his left adductor. The Eagles removed Ryu from their active roster Friday, a day after the left-hander made his 13th start of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season. Ryu lasted only 3 2/3 innings while allowing four runs on eight hits — both totals tied for his season high — in a 7-0 loss to the KT Wiz. He also served up his first home run since April 30. Per KBO rules, a player taken off an active roster must be away for a minimum of 10 days. The Eagles said Ryu will likely skip two turns in the rotation before rejoining the team. For the season, Ryu is 5-3 with a 3.46 ERA. Ryu, 38, is in his second season back with the Eagles after pitching in Major League Baseball from 2013 to 2023. His first tour of duty with the Eagles went from 2006 to 2012. Last year, Ryu went 10-8 with a 3.87 ERA. The Eagles are also without right-handed starter Moon Dong-ju, who was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 26. He wasn't experiencing any physical issues, but the Eagles wanted to give the

After early qualification, S. Korea coach shifts focus to World Cup preparation

With his team having clinched an early berth in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, South Korea head coach Hong Myung-bo said he is now ready to turn his attention to preparing for the big tournament. South Korea defeated Iraq 2-0 for their latest Group B victory in the third round of the Asian qualifiers at Basra International Stadium in Basra, Iraq, on Thursday (local time). The victory gave South Korea one of two World Cup tickets out of their group with one more match to go in the current phase. South Korea will close out the third round by hosting Kuwait at Seoul World Cup Stadium next Tuesday but Hong has already begun looking beyond that otherwise inconsequential match. "Since we have qualified for the World Cup after today's match, everything we do from now on will be done with a focus on the World Cup," Hong said at his postmatch press conference, according to a video clip released to the South Korean media by the Korea Football Association. "There are a lot of things to do, and we will handle one thing at a time to prepare for the tournament." South Korea struggled to generate chances ear

Super subs lift S. Korea to early World Cup berth

After the starters couldn't get anything going, super subs stepped up for South Korea and helped the country grab an early berth for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. South Korea blanked Iraq 2-0 for their latest Group B victory in the third round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers at Basra International Stadium in Basra, Iraq, on Thursday (local time). South Korea are tops in Group B with 19 points, three more than Jordan, and those two countries have qualified for the World Cup as the top two seeds in their group with one match remaining next week. South Korea had virtually nothing working offensively early on, with Iraq applying aggressive pressing and giving the visitors precious little space. The match took an unexpected turn when Iraqi forward Ali Al-Hamadi was sent off with a direct red card in the 26th minute for fouling Cho Yu-min in their battle for a loose ball. Things began opening up for South Korea, though the best they managed was hitting the crossbar twice — first by Lee Jae-sung with a header in the 36th minute followed by Lee Kang-in during the late minutes of the first half w

S. Korea headed to World Cup after months of turmoil, uninspired play

Following a long stretch of uninspired play on the heels of a controversial coaching hire, South Korea will compete at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after all. South Korea booked their spot in the big tournament after beating Iraq 2-0 in their second-to-last Group B match in the third round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers in Basra, southern Iraq, Thursday night. The top two nations from each of the three groups in this phase will grab their tickets to the 2026 World Cup, to be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Thursday's result assured South Korea of one of the two spots available out of their group, regardless of how they fare against Kuwait in the final qualifying match in Seoul on Tuesday. South Korea will play in their 11th consecutive World Cup, a streak topped by only five countries — Brazil, Germany, Argentina, Italy and Spain. However, the third round was anything but smooth sailing for South Korea, and they didn't quite capture the fans' imagination the way some of their predecessors did. Toward the end of the second round, South Korea went through two temporary h

Changwon creates new task force in response to KBO team's relocation threat

The municipal government of Changwon announced Thursday it has created a new task force in response to a threat by its local baseball club to move if a better support system is not put in place. Changwon said its four-person task force, which will begin operations Monday, will be in charge of addressing demands made by the NC Dinos of the Korea Baseball Organization. The announcement came six days after Dinos CEO Lee Jin-man said at a press conference he was exploring the possibility of relocating the team to another city. Lee claimed the Dinos had been "treated unreasonably" by Changwon, and it put the Dinos' existence in danger, despite the team's best efforts to "put down roots in the local community." The Dinos spent nearly two months on the road after a tragic incident at their home, Changwon NC Park, claimed the life of a fan during a game March 29. It prompted extensive safety inspections and maintenance work at the stadium, which opened in 2019. Changwon faced criticism for shunning responsibility for running the stadium even though it owns the facility. Later on, baseball fans h

Heroes sign ex-MLB player Garrett as temporary injury replacement

The Kiwoom Heroes announced Thursday they have signed former major leaguer Stone Garrett as a temporary injury replacement. Garrett, 29, will make $35,000 as a fill-in for Ruben Cardenas, who will be out for about six weeks due to a flexor injury in his right arm. Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) teams are allowed to acquire foreign players on temporary contracts to step in for players sidelined for at least six weeks. Earlier this year, the LG Twins made a use of that rule by signing Australian pitcher Coen Wynne to take a rotation spot for injured Elieser Hernandez. Garrett has played in 118 major league games, most recently two games for the Washington Nationals in 2024. This season, he played 15 games for the Nationals' Triple-A affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings. The Heroes said Garrett was preparing for a move to the Mexican league before signing with them. Garrett enjoyed his best big league season in 2023, when he had nine homers and 40 RBIs with a .269/.343/.457 in 89 games for the Nationals. The Heroes said Garrett is just the type of right-handed power hitter they needed, addi
