Padres' Song Sung-mun hits 1st MLB home run in loss

Song Sung-mun has hit his first home run in Major League Baseball. Song hit a solo shot off Chicago Cubs starter Colin Rea to lead off the top of the fifth inning at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Wednesday (local time). Song drilled a middle-middle fastball from Rea and sent it 385 feet into the stands in right field. The line drive shot left Song's bat at 107.7 miles per hour, with a launch angle of 20 degrees. Song had hit a double in his first trip to the plate in the third inning. The former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) All-Star flied out in the sixth and grounded out in the eighth. The Korean is batting .233 in 33 games in his first major league campaign, and has a home run, nine RBIs and six steals. Song's home run cut the Padres' deficit to 9-1 and they went on to lose by 23-3. San Diego starter Walker Buehler served up three home runs and reliever Kyle Hart, a former starting pitcher in the KBO, also surrendered three dingers. Catcher Rodolfo Duran, who pitched the final two innings of the blowout, gave up two more long balls, as the Padres suffered their fifth consecutive loss.

Giants' Lee Jung-hoo ties MLB triple record by Asian player

Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants has tied a major league record for triples by an Asian-born player in a season. Lee went 3-for-4 with his 12th triple of the year as the Giants defeated the Colorado Rockies 6-3 at Oracle Park in San Francisco on Friday (local time). He smoked the three-bagger off the bottom of the right-center field wall in the bottom of the second inning. The ball traveled 387 feet at 22 degrees of launch angle, and would have been a home run at 22 of 30 stadiums in Major League Baseball (MLB). Lee broke a tie with two other players to grab the sole possession of third place in MLB in that category, behind only Corbin Carroll of the Arizona Diamondbacks (17) and Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox (13). Lee also tied Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki for the most triples by an Asian player in a season. Ichiro, as he is widely known, had a dozen triples in 2005. He wears Ichiro's old number, 51, in honor of the retired Japanese superstar. Lee flied out in the third inning but then singled in the sixth and again in the seventh. He has now hit safely in three straight games

Lee Do-hyun soars to men's lead title at climbing worlds in Seoul

Lee Do-hyun captured his first career world title in the men's lead event at the sport climbing world championships in Seoul on Friday. Lee scored 43+ points in the men's lead final of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Climbing World Championships at KSPO Dome inside Olympic Park in southeastern Seoul. He is the first South Korean male climber to win a world title in any discipline. Satone Yoshida of Japan also finished with 43+ points but Lee got the upper hand after outscoring Yoshida in the semifinals, 48+ to 46+. Taisei Homma of Japan got the bronze medal with 42+ points. Jakob Schubert of Austria, a four-time world champion, finished seventh with 34 points. Lee is fourth in the world lead rankings and won a World Cup title in that discipline in Madrid two months ago. He is also No. 2 in the boulder rankings and the 2023 world boulder bronze medalist. "Definitely, the feeling is amazing. My dream came true," Lee said. "I'm so happy to compete here because this is my hometown and my parents and friends came. It means a lot." Asked if he thought he could also win a me

Ryder Cup begins in electric atmosphere at Bethpage Black

FARMINGDALE, United States (AFP) - Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau blasted the opening tee shots as the 45th Ryder Cup between the United States and Europe began Friday in an electric atmosphere at Bethpage Black. US President Donald Trump was among 50,000 spectators expected for the opening day as the Americans and Europeans renewed golf hostilities for the 45th time in the biennial rivalry. Rahm's first shot went well into the right rough while DeChambeau smashed his ball into the fairway 10 yards shy of the green at the first hole, to the delight of the crowd. Trophy holders Europe seek the first road triumph by either side since their 2012 "Miracle at Medinah" while the Americans try to win back the Cup after losing two years ago in Rome. US fans chanted "We want Bryson" in the high-pressure crucible of the first tee, with 5,000 fans watching from the largest grandstand in Ryder Cup history, creating an intense scene from the start. "The first tee, first match, wherever you play home or away, it's intense and pure energy," Europe captain Luke Donald said. Americans DeChambeau and Justin

Seo Chae-hyun grabs bronze in women's lead at climbing worlds in Seoul

Seo Chae-hyun captured bronze in the women's lead event at the sport climbing world championships in Seoul on Friday for her third career medal at the competition. Seo scored 44+ points in the women's lead final of the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) Climbing World Championships at KSPO Dome inside Olympic Park in southeastern Seoul. Janja Garnbret of Slovenia won her third world title with a score of "top" for completing her climb, followed by her fellow Slovenian, Rosa Rekar, with 45 points. Seo, 21, earlier won gold at the 2021 worlds and picked up bronze two years later. In lead, the objective for climbers is to ascend as high as possible on a route set on a 15-meter wall within six minutes. Climbers each earn 25 points for reaching and controlling the final top hold of a boulder problem and 10 points for reaching a designated zone hold and making a movement to stabilize or advance the climb. The "+" sign is added to their score if they move toward the next hold but fail to secure it. Climbers also lose 0.1 point for each unsuccessful attempt.

American League East race between Yankees and Blue Jays comes down to final weekend of season

NEW YORK (AP) — All even atop the AL East with three games to go. That means the division title will be determined this weekend by how the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees handle a pair of also-rans. After both teams won at home Thursday night, the Yankees and Blue Jays remain tied for first place — and the best record in the American League — at 91-68. New York hosts last-place Baltimore beginning Friday night, while Toronto welcomes fourth-place Tampa Bay north of the border. “I think everyone's very locked in the way they need to be right now,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “Hopefully we can keep this going.” Regardless of results over the next three days, the Yankees and Blue Jays are both headed to the playoffs. One will have home-field advantage throughout a best-of-three Wild Card Series starting Tuesday — very possibly against another AL East foe, the Boston Red Sox. The other will win the division and earn a first-round bye before opening the postseason at home Oct. 4 in Game 1 of a best-of-five Division Series. “I'll take the bye all day long,” Boone

2024 Paris Olympic champion in women's badminton An Se-young advances to semifinals at Korea Open

World No. 1 An Se-young reached the semifinals of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour event in South Korea on Friday, moving within two wins of claiming her eighth international title of the season. An defeated Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan 2-0 (21-7, 21-17) in 41 minutes in the women's singles quarterfinals at the Korea Open at Suwon Gymnasium in Suwon, 30 kilometers south of Seoul. An was hardly challenged in the first game. Things were closer in the next game, when Miyazaki battled back from a 15-11 deficit to draw even at 15 apiece. From there, An pulled away with four consecutive points and closed out the 10th-ranked player. Without a trio of Chinese players Wang Zhiyi (world No. 2), Han Yue (No. 3) and Chen Yufei (No. 5) in action, An is considered a heavy favorite to win her third career Korea Open title. She previously won the BWF event on home soil in 2022 and 2023. In the semifinals, An will play world No. 6 Pornpawee Chochuwong. An has won all 11 meetings against the Thai player over their careers. In the men's doubles Friday, the world No. 1 tandem of Seo Seung-jae and

Defending KBO champions Tigers eliminated from postseason contention

The Kia Tigers will not have a chance to defend their title in South Korean baseball this fall, absorbing one final gut punch in what has been a frustrating, injury-ravaged season. The Tigers were eliminated from the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) postseason contention Wednesday night while they were idle. The fifth-place KT Wiz hammered the SSG Landers 10-1 to improve to 70-66-4 (wins-losses-ties) with four games to play. With that result, the Tigers fell six games behind the Wiz in eighth place at 63-71-4 with six games to go. Even if the Tigers win out and the Wiz lose all four of their remaining games, the Tigers will not catch the Wiz. In that scenario, the Wiz will finish right at .500, 70-70-4, while the Tigers will still be two games below the break-even mark at 69-71-4. The Tigers will now try to avoid becoming only the second team to finish in eighth place or lower a year after winning the Korean Series. The Tigers won the 2024 Korean Series with relative ease, and after they retained most of their core and added some pieces, the Tigers were the trendy preseason pick among m

An Se-young reaches quarterfinals at Korea Open

World No. 1 An Se-young advanced to the quarterfinals of the ongoing Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour event at home Thursday. The top-seeded An knocked off Chiu Pin-Chian of Chinese Taipei 2-0 (21-13, 21-8) in the round of 16 of the Korea Open at Suwon Gymnasium in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province. An went up 12-6 before allowing Chiu to cut it to 13-11. From there, An claimed seven straight points to regain control of the match. The Korean star then won the first seven points of the second game en route to an easy victory. In the quarterfinals, An will take on Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan. An is going for her eighth BWF World Tour victory of this season and her third career Korea Open title, following her back-to-back wins in 2022 and 2023. An is regarded as the favorite this week, in the absence of other high-ranked players, including a trio of Chinese players in Wang Zhiyi (No. 2), Han Yue (No. 3) and Chen Yufei (No. 5). Akane Yamaguchi of Japan, world No. 4, is the second seed in Suwon and is on the opposite side of the bracket from An. An and Yamaguchi have split their 28 head-to-head ma

With 1st place in sight, Eagles manager not looking past game at hand

With the top seed in the Korean baseball postseason suddenly within reach for his team, Hanwha Eagles manager Kim Kyung-moon said Thursday he will try to stay in the moment and not look past the immediate task at hand. That will be trying to beat the Doosan Bears at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Thursday, as the Eagles are trying to chase down the LG Twins for first place in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). At 80-54-3 (wins-losses-ties), the Eagles are 2 1/2 games back of the Twins (83-52-3) with seven games to play. And three of those games will be against the Twins in a three-game series starting Friday in the Eagles' home of Daejeon. The Eagles were 5 1/2 games out at the start of September but have since made things closer than expected. The upcoming series has been billed as the biggest one of this KBO season for either team, but Kim insisted he will only worry about Thursday's game. "Every remaining game is important for us," Kim said in his pregame media availability. "But we have to take it one game at a time. We have to focus on trying to win today's game and not wo

Out of postseason contention, Bears not about to play out string: manager

Even with his club long out of postseason contention in South Korean baseball, Doosan Bears interim manager Cho Sung-hwan said Thursday he won't have his team just play out the string over the final stretch. Cho said he doesn't want opponents to think the Bears are trying to help some teams but not others as jostling for postseason berths continues in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). With five games left before hosting the Hanwha Eagles at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul on Thursday, the Bears found themselves in ninth place at 58-75-6 (wins-losses-ties), 10 games out of the final postseason spot. But the Bears will still have a lot of say in how the postseason seeding will be determined. Their five remaining games will all be against either teams that are already in the postseason and are looking to move up in the standings, or teams that are trying to crack the top five. "I absolutely do not want other teams to have any misunderstanding. We are going to stick to our normal starting rotation and not change anything at this point in the season," Cho said. "Given the disappointing
