What about Park Ji-sung or Lee Young-pyo as head coach?

Now that Hong Myung-bo has resigned, there will be a debate as to who is next to take the national team hot seat, one of the most pressured jobs in Asia. In the past this used to be a fun ritual. First, the media would throw lots of names around — both foreign and domestic. Then there would be a short list revealed and the excitement would move up a level with rumors, reports and all the rest. Outgoing Korea Football Association (KFA) chief Chung Mung-gyu spoiled it all of late by going outside the normal practices to ensure Jurgen Klinsmann got the job in 2023 and Hong in 2024. Indeed, this is part of the reason for the current anger. Now, though, there is going to be a new boss and while it is best not to rush, the question will soon start to be asked: Who? Despite all the criticism at Hong, he is actually one of the most successful Korean coaches. He led Ulsan HD to two successive K-League titles in 2022 and 2023 and also won bronze with the U-23 team at the 2012 London Olympics. Two years ago, there weren’t a lot of choices in terms of quality local coaches and that is still an i

Braves' Kim Ha-seong back in hit column; Giants' Lee Jung-hoo smacks 1st double of September

Kim Ha-seong of the Atlanta Braves resumed his hitting ways a day after his season-best streak ended. Kim went 1-for-4 in a 4-3 loss to the Washington Nationals at Truist Park in Atlanta on Wednesday (local time). He is batting .250 for the season and .289 in 21 games since joining the Braves at the start of September. Kim saw his 10-game hitting streak snapped Tuesday but returned to the hit column in his first trip to the plate in the bottom of the second inning Wednesday, with a single deflected into center field by the glove of second baseman Luis Garcia Jr. Kim was held hitless over his next three plate appearances. He lined out to left fielder Daylen Lile in the fourth and flied out to right fielder Dylan Crews in the sixth, before grounding out to Garcia in the eighth. Also in the majors Wednesday, Lee Jung-hoo of the San Francisco Giants went 1-for-4 with his first double of September, as his team defeated the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 at Oracle Park in San Francisco. Batting sixth, Lee lined a double to center in the bottom of the second inning to score Casey Schmitt, who'd doubled

Blue Jays sign Korean teenage pitcher Moon Seo-jun

The Toronto Blue Jays have finalized the signing of Korean pitching prospect Moon Seo-jun. The Blue Jays announced their deal with the 18-year-old right-hander Wednesday (local time). The team did not disclose financial details, but Moon's Seoul-based agency, Leeco Sports Agency, said he had signed for a $1.5 million bonus. The Los Angeles Dodgers and the New York Mets are also believed to have been interested in the pitcher listed at 196 centimeters. Moon, a product of Jangchung High School in Seoul, is the first Korean international amateur signing in Blue Jays history. Over his three-year high school career here, Moon went 6-2 with a 2.18 ERA, along with 93 strikeouts and 38 walks in 66 innings. He did not surrender a home run. His fastball has sat around 150 kph, and he also throws a slider, a curveball, a changeup and a two-seam fastball. Moon was expected to be a top-three selection at the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) draft held earlier this month but chose to make his professional debut overseas instead. "I've always dreamed of pitching in Major League Baseball, and it's an hon

An Se-young eased into the second round at the latest Badminton World Federation (BWF) World Tour event on home soil Wednesday. An, the reigning Olympic women's singles champion, defeated Karupathevan Letshanaa of Malaysia 2-0 (21-14, 21-9) to begin her Korea Open at Suwon Gymnasium in Suwon, 30 kilometers south of Seoul. An needed just 36 minutes to win her round of 32 match. She found herself down 8-6 in the first game before grabbing six straight points and had an even easier time in the second game. In the round of 16, An will face Chiu Pin-Chian of Chinese Taipei. An has won seven tournaments on the BWF World Tour so far this season, including the prestigious All England Open. The South Korean star settled for the bronze medal in her title defense at the world championships in Paris in August, but bounced back to capture her second straight China Masters title last week. The world No. 1 will be the favorite to claim her third career Korea Open title, following back-to-back wins in 2022 and 2023. Afghan women's refugee football team set for October debut

DUBAI — The Afghan women's refugee team will make their international debut next month at a tournament in the United Arab Emirates, FIFA said on Wednesday. The FIFA Council of football's world governing body approved the creation of the refugee team in May as part of efforts to support women players inside and outside the country. The Afghan side will feature in a competition in Dubai on Oct. 23-29 that also includes the women's teams of hosts the United Arab Emirates, Chad and Libya. "Ensuring that all women have access to football is a priority for FIFA and a key element in shaping the future of our sport," FIFA president Gianni Infantino said. The Taliban authorities have been back in power for four years in Afghanistan after ousting a U.S.-backed government and have drawn international criticism for their human rights record, particularly the treatment of women. Women and girls are banned from most education and work, and also barred from parks and gyms. Under Scottish coach Pauline Hamill the Afghan team have conducted talent ID camps, including in England and Sydney, to pick out pl

KBO to introduce salary floor in 2027

The Korean baseball league said it will introduce a salary floor in 2027 to ensure more competitive balance and require teams to spend a certain amount of money on player wages. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced the change Wednesday, a day after the meeting of its board of directors, made up of club presidents. The floor has been set at 6.06 billion won ($4.3 million), which is the average salary for the team with the lowest payroll over the past two years. The floor will be raised by 5 percent every year. A first-time violator will be required to pay 30 percent of the amount below the floor. The second violation will result in a fine of 50 percent of the money below the floor. A team that fails to meet the floor for the third time must pay 100 percent of that shortage. These penalties will go toward the KBO's youth development fund. In addition, the KBO will raise the salary cap by 5 percent annually from 2026 to 2028. The cap for this season is 13.7 billion won and it will be raised to 14.4 billion won for 2026, 15.1 billion won for 2027 and 15.9 billion won for 2028. Teams

KBO postseason picture getting clearer with teams reaching brink of elimination

With each passing day in the final stretch of the regular season, the postseason picture is becoming clearer in Korean baseball, with more teams reaching the brink of elimination. The LG Twins and the Hanwha Eagles are locked into the top two spots in the 10-team Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), while the three remaining postseason tickets remain up for grabs. The SSG Landers, at 70-62-4 (wins-losses-ties) through Tuesday, hold a two-game lead over the Samsung Lions (70-66-2) in third place. The Lions are up a half game on the KT Wiz (69-66-4). The Lotte Giants (65-67-6) trail the Wiz by 2 1/2 games, while the NC Dinos (64-67-6) are another half game back in seventh place. The Kia Tigers, the 2024 Korean Series champions, are a loss or a Wiz victory away from being eliminated from the postseason race at 62-71-4, which puts them six games behind the Wiz with seven games to play. The Landers have cut their magic number to clinch a postseason spot to three. For both the Lions and the Wiz, the magic number to get into the October tournament is four. Hitting streak snapped at 10 games for Braves' Kim Ha-seong

Kim Ha-seong of the Atlanta Braves has seen his season-long hitting streak come to an end at 10 games. Kim went 0-for-4 with three groundouts and a flyout, as the Braves edged out the Washington Nationals 3-2 at Truist Park in Atlanta on Tuesday (local time). During his 10-game streak, Kim batted 14-for-37 (.378) with two home runs, eight RBIs and 10 runs. His batting average for the season had gone up from .217 to .257 during that span, but it came down to .250 after his hitless day. Facing starter Brad Lord out of the No. 5 spot in the lineup, Kim grounded out to second baseman Nasim Nunez in the bottom of the second inning and then to shortstop CJ Abrams in the fifth. In the bottom of the sixth, Kim flied out to left fielder James Wood. With reliever Julian Fernandez on the mound, Kim bounced out to third baseman Brady House in the eighth. Kim is batting .309 in September after joining the Braves off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays at the start of this month. With Kim having turned his season around after a short, injury-plagued stint with the Rays, it bears watching whether the Gold Gl

Battle for KBO strikeout title going down to wire

Hanwha Eagles ace Cody Ponce broke the single-season strikeout record in Korean baseball on Sept. 3. However, he may not finish the season as the league leader in that category. That's because Drew Anderson of the SSG Landers has made up serious ground this month to move within striking distance of his fellow American hurler. Through Monday's action, Ponce was still leading the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with 242 strikeouts. But Anderson, after striking out seven batters Monday, is now up to 240. The previous single-season record had been 225, set by Ariel Miranda of the Doosan Bears in 2021. After surpassing Miranda's mark on Sept. 3, Ponce stood at 228 strikeouts, 14 ahead of Anderson. Since then, Anderson has added 26 strikeouts over his next three starts, while Ponce has made only two starts and struck out 14. Ponce has thrown more innings than Anderson, 174 2/3 to 164 1/3, but Anderson has struck out 13.04 batters per nine innings, better than Ponce's rate of 12.47 per nine frames. Both pitchers have one more start left this month and may get another nod in a makeup game in earl

Hitting streak reaches 10 games for Braves' Kim Ha-seong

Kim Ha-seong of the Atlanta Braves has now hit safely in 10 consecutive games. Kim batted 1-for-4 as the Braves defeated the Washington Nationals 11-5 at Truist Park in Atlanta on Monday (local time). After batting sixth in four consecutive games, Kim hit fifth in the lineup for the first time since Sept. 15. And Kim wasted no time keeping his streak alive, as he led off the bottom of the second inning with a single. Kim battled starter MacKenzie Gore for nine pitches, fouling off six pitches, before hitting a line drive to left field. Kim moved to second on a walk to Drake Baldwin and then to third on a double play hit by Marcell Ozuna. Michael Harris II then brought Kim home with a double that gave the Braves a 2-1 lead. Kim was also in the middle of the action during the Braves' five-run third inning. With two men aboard, Kim drew a walk to load the bases. Baldwin singled home two runners while Kim advanced to third, and then Kim came home on a follow-up single by Ozuna. With one out in the bottom of the fifth, Kim lined out sharply to center fielder Jacob Young, who had the ball pop out

KBO-worst Heroes mull promoting interim manager to full-time role: sources

In their search for a new manager, the Kiwoom Heroes may end up promoting interim skipper Seol Jong-jin to the full-time role for the new season, sources said Tuesday. The Heroes are high on Seol's success in stabilizing the club in the second half of the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) season after a dismal first half cost former manager Hong Won-ki his job in July, according to the sources. The Heroes are still in last place in the 10-team KBO with a 47-88-4 (wins-losses-ties) record with five games to play. They were the league-worst 27-61-3 entering the All-Star break, a winning percentage of .307. On Seol's watch, the Heroes have gone 20-27-1, good for eighth in the league since the midseason break. They also have the third-highest winning percentage in September at 7-5-0 and have played the role of spoiler against clubs vying for postseason berths. Since the start of August, the Heroes have the highest batting average with runners in scoring position at .299 — an impressive turnaround for a team that ranked last in that department through the end of July at .240. And they have d
