Padres' Song Sung-mun hits 1st MLB home run in loss

Song Sung-mun has hit his first home run in Major League Baseball. Song hit a solo shot off Chicago Cubs starter Colin Rea to lead off the top of the fifth inning at Wrigley Field in Chicago on Wednesday (local time). Song drilled a middle-middle fastball from Rea and sent it 385 feet into the stands in right field. The line drive shot left Song's bat at 107.7 miles per hour, with a launch angle of 20 degrees. Song had hit a double in his first trip to the plate in the third inning. The former Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) All-Star flied out in the sixth and grounded out in the eighth. The Korean is batting .233 in 33 games in his first major league campaign, and has a home run, nine RBIs and six steals. Song's home run cut the Padres' deficit to 9-1 and they went on to lose by 23-3. San Diego starter Walker Buehler served up three home runs and reliever Kyle Hart, a former starting pitcher in the KBO, also surrendered three dingers. Catcher Rodolfo Duran, who pitched the final two innings of the blowout, gave up two more long balls, as the Padres suffered their fifth consecutive loss.

Hwang You-min captures maiden LPGA title

Hwang You-min has captured her first LPGA title in Hawaii with a late birdie barrage in the final round. Hwang won the Lotte Championship at Hoakalei Country Club in Ewa Beach, Hawaii, Saturday (local time), with a four-round total of 17-under 271. Hwang recorded birdies on five of her last six holes, including the last four straight, en route to a five-under 67 in the final round. Hwang's fellow South Korean Kim Hyo-joo finished alone in second place at 16-under after carding a 68 in the final round. Her birdie on the final hole wasn't enough to catch Hwang, who grabbed $450,000 in the winner's check. Hwang, 22, has been playing on the Korea LPGA Tour since 2023. She was the runner-up for the Rookie of the Year award in 2023 and has won two tournaments on the domestic circuit. By winning an LPGA tournament as a nonmember, Hwang has an option of accepting her LPGA membership immediately or deferring it to the start of the 2026 season. Hwang has said earlier this year that she would enter the LPGA qualifying tournament, the Q-Series, later this year to realize her dream of playing statesid

S. Korea reach knockout stage at FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile

South Korea have advanced to the knockout phase at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile. The team will play in the round of 16 for the fourth consecutive U-20 tournament, after punching their ticket as one of the four best third-place teams from the group stage, while the top two teams from six groups earned automatic spots. Coached by Lee Chang-won, South Korea lost to Ukraine 2-1 to open Group B play last Saturday, and then had a goalless draw against Paraguay three days later. On Friday, South Korea defeated Panama 2-1 to finish the group stage with four points. Ukraine won the group with seven points and Paraguay, who also had four points, beat out South Korea on tiebreakers. South Korea had to wait for other results to see if they would snatch one of four knockout spots awarded to third-place teams. And Spain's 1-0 win over Brazil in Group C, Saturday, pushed South Korea to the top of the rankings among No. 3 seeds on goal difference, and it ensured that the young Taegeuk Warriors would finish no lower than fourth among No. 3 seeds regardless of results in remaining group matches. Kim Hye-seong benched in Dodgers' opening MLB postseason win

Korean utility player Kim Hye-seong remained on the bench as his Los Angeles Dodgers enjoyed a home victory to begin their World Series title defense. The Dodgers defeated the Cincinnati Reds 10-5 in Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series at Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles on Tuesday (local time). Game 2 is back in Los Angeles on Wednesday. Kim made the Dodgers' 26-man roster for the Wild Card Series, after batting .280 with three homers, 17 RBIs and 13 steals in 71 games during his first regular season in Major League Baseball (MLB). Kim played three different positions during the regular season -- as second baseman, shortstop and center fielder -- and could serve as a late-inning defensive replacement or a pinch runner in the postseason. Kim is also the only Korean whose MLB team reached the postseason. Lee Jung-hoo and the San Francisco Giants and Kim Ha-seong and his Atlanta Braves both missed out on the party. Shohei Ohtani blasted two home runs to lift the Dodgers to the victory, as they try to become the first team since the 1998-2000 New York Yankees to win consecutive Worl

Bears ruin Twins' bid to clinch KBO pennant at home

The Doosan Bears ruined their Seoul rival LG Twins' bid to grab the South Korean baseball pennant at home Tuesday night with a convincing 6-0 victory. In order to clinch the best regular-season record in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO), the Twins, who entered the game leading the Hanwha Eagles by 2 1/2 games in first place, either needed a win or a loss or a tie by the Eagles against the Lotte Giants on Tuesday. They didn't get any of that in their favor, as they managed only three hits at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul, and the Eagles beat the Giants 1-0 in 10 innings at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon, 140 kilometers south of the capital. The Twins, now 85-54-3 (wins-losses-ties), will take another crack in their season finale Wednesday night against the NC Dinos. The Eagles, 1 1/2 games back of the Twins at 83-56-3, play the SSG Landers on Wednesday and then finish their regular season against the KT Wiz on Friday. The Bears finished the season in ninth place at 61-77-6. Former Twin Yang Suk-hwan smacked a two-run home run to put the Bears on the board in the top of the

Lions slugger Diaz becomes 1st foreign player to hit 50 home runs in KBO

Lewin Diaz of the Samsung Lions became the first foreign-born player to hit 50 home runs in a season in South Korean baseball. Diaz belted a three-run shot off Kim Tae-hyeong of the Kia Tigers during the bottom of the first inning of their Korea Baseball Organization regular-season game at Daegu Samsung Lions Park in Daegu, 235 kilometers southeast of Seoul. With his 50th homer, the Dominican Republic-born first baseman joined three others, all South Korean-born players, to reach the half-century mark in the KBO's 43-year history. Former Lions slugger Lee Seung-yuop owns the single-season record with 56 home runs from the 2003 season, and he also had 54 homers in 1999. During Lee's home run case in 2003, Shim Chong-soo of the Hyundai Unicorns smoked 53 homers. Diaz's current Lions teammate, Park Byung-ho, had 52 and then 53 homers in 2014 and 2015 for the Nexen Heroes. The three-run shot gave Diaz 156 RBIs, already a league record. Park held the previous mark of 146 set in 2015.

KBO saves leader Oh Seung-hwan not regretting decision to retire

Samsung Lions reliever Oh Seung-hwan, the all-time saves leader in Korean baseball, said Tuesday he has no regrets about his decision to hang up his spikes. Oh, 43, will wrap up his 21-year professional career after this season, having recorded 427 saves to sit atop the career leaderboard in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO). Widely considered the finest closer in the KBO's 43-year history, Oh has spent his entire 15-year KBO career with the Lions, who selected him fifth overall out of college in the first round of the 2004 draft. After not having pitched since July 8, Oh was added to the Lions' roster prior to their final home game of the season against the Kia Tigers at Daegu Samsung Lions Park in Daegu, 235 kilometers southeast of Seoul. In his pregame press conference, Oh said he had worked hard to be ready to pitch one last time at home. "Knowing I wouldn't have to take care of my body after this, I pushed myself really hard for this opportunity," Oh said. "I feel great and I will prepare for it like it's another game. It's a really important game for us." Oh announced his decisi

Big month and year coming up for Hwang Hee-chan

September was a decent month for the Korean national team, with a win over the United States stateside and a draw with a tough Mexican team. Over the next few weeks, there is more action in the Americas as Chile hosts the Under-20 World Cup. The young Taeguk Warriors open against Ukraine, the team it lost to in the 2019 final, on Sunday (Seoul time), and then take on Paraguay and Panama. With the top two from each of the six groups going through, along with the four best third-placed teams, the Koreans should make it to the knockout stages. The senior World Cup is never far from mind however, and it will certainly be on the mind of Hwang Hee-chan. With Son Heung-min departing Tottenham Hotspur for Los Angeles FC this summer, Hwang is the only Korean forward with experience in the English Premier League. The new season is not going well for Hwang and his club Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 29-year-old has played over 100 league games for the Wolves since joining the club in 2021. Injuries and not being selected have limited his appearances. In the first five games this season so far, he pl

Twins manager hoping to lock down KBO pennant before finale

After his LG Twins opened September holding a 5 1/2-game lead over the Hanwha Eagles for first place in Korean baseball, manager Youm Kyoung-youb felt his club would have clinched the top spot by now, with two games left on the season. Instead, following a loss to the Eagles on Monday, the Twins still have not secured the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) pennant. Now leading the Eagles by 2 1/2 games, the Twins can lock down the top seed either with a win over the Doosan Bears on Tuesday or with a loss by the Eagles against the Lotte Giants. If the Twins don't get their way Tuesday at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul, then they will take another shot Wednesday in a home game against the NC Dinos. "We tried so hard not to get to this point, but here we are," Youm said with a wry grin in his pregame media availability. "Now, our biggest goal is not to have this pushed to tomorrow's game." As good as the Twins have been in many aspects this season, their bullpen has had an adventurous year. For September, they have the league's third-worst ERA with 6.87. They received some much-needed reinf

Hanwha Eagles hold off LG Twins to stay alive in KBO pennant chase

The Hanwha Eagles defeated the LG Twins 7-3 at home Monday to keep their South Korean baseball pennant hopes alive. With the victory at Daejeon Hanwha Life Ballpark in Daejeon, the Eagles improved to 82-56-3 (wins-losses-ties), now 2 1/2 games behind the Twins (85-54-3) for the top spot in the Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) with three games to go. The Twins would have clinched the best record in the regular season with either a win or a tie Monday, but their magic number stayed at one after the Eagles made sure their rivals wouldn't uncork champagne in Daejeon. The Twins, who have two home games remaining, will take another crack at winning the pennant Tuesday against the Doosan Bears at Jamsil Baseball Stadium in Seoul. The Eagles have no margin for error. To climb to first place, they must win out and hope the Twins will lose all of their remaining games. In that case, the Eagles and the Twins will play a tiebreaker game to determine the top seed. The top seed in the KBO will earn a bye to the Korean Series and enjoy an extended break after the end of the regular season. The Twins fi
