At RIMPAC, Korea’s newest warships signal Navy’s growing role

HONOLULU — “Possible enemy missile launch detected.” The announcement echoed through the combat information center aboard the ROKS Jeongjo the Great and conversations stopped instantly. Sailors fixed their eyes on rows of tactical displays as a simulated missile track appeared on the main screen. Another order came seconds later. “SM-2 interceptor launch in 10 seconds.” The countdown ended. Operators continued working quietly at their consoles while the missile icon closed on its target. A few moments later, another voice broke the silence. “Target disappeared from radar.” The engagement lasted only minutes. It was only a simulation ahead of the sea phase of the Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC), but inside the Republic of Korea Navy’s newest Aegis destroyer, there was little to distinguish the drill from combat. The scene aboard Jeongjo the Great captures how far the ROK Navy has come since sending two frigates to its first RIMPAC in 1990. This year, nearly all of the country's newest major naval assets have converged at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam — the 8,200-ton Ae

Acting budget minister says addressing demographic crisis top priority

Acting Budget Minister Lim Ki-geun said Friday that South Korea's plunging birthrate has become the nation's most urgent challenge, calling for swift and effective countermeasures. He made the remarks at a government expert forum on demographic challenges, describing the issue as the most urgent among the country's five major structural reform tasks. Lim cited recent remarks by Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who sarcastically underscored the severity of the country's demographic situation in an interview. Musk said, "North Korea won't need to invade. They can just walk across," warning that South Korea's population could shrink sharply within a few decades if current trends continue. Calling the criticism "painful but necessary," Lim reiterated that addressing the population crisis is the government's top reform priority. Other key reform areas include a large-scale transition to artificial intelligence (AI) and efforts to address widening social polarization. Based on discussions at the forum, Lim said the government plans to set clear goals and performance indicators for a mid- to long-term nation

Ex-president sentenced to 5 years in prison in first martial law-linked ruling

Former President Yoon Suk Yeol was sentenced to five years in prison on Friday on multiple charges related to his martial law declaration. The ruling, televised live, was the first judicial decision addressing Yoon’s responsibility linked to the imposition of military rule on Dec. 3, 2024. Judges at the Seoul Central District Court convicted Yoon on charges including infringement of ministers’ constitutional right to deliberate on the imposition of martial law, aggravated obstruction of the execution of a lawful warrant and the fabrication and destruction of official documents. The court stressed that emergency martial law is an “extremely exceptional” measure that may only be invoked when there is no other way to overcome a national crisis. “The fact that the Constitution specifically requires deliberation on a declaration of martial law is meant to prevent abuse of presidential power and to check unilateral decision-making. So the president must, even more than in ordinary Cabinet meetings, listen carefully to the views of all Cabinet members and act with great caution,” Ju

Court upholds life sentence for teacher over student's murder

A court of appeals on Friday upheld a lower court's life imprisonment for a teacher accused of murdering a 7-year-old student at their school in the central city of Daejeon about a year ago. The Daejeon High Court handed down the ruling to teacher Myeong Jae-wan, 49, after convicting her of stabbing the girl, Kim Ha-neul, to death. Myeong was indicted for luring the student to a classroom in the afternoon of Feb. 10, 2025, when the girl was leaving an afterschool care program, by offering her a book and then stabbing her there with a weapon she had prepared in advance. She was also charged with kicking and damaging a school computer and assaulting another teacher, several days before the murder. The appellate court also confirmed the lower court's order for the teacher to wear an electronic tracking device for 30 years.

USFK commander highlights 'centrality' of Korea in security of Indo-Pacific

U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) Commander Gen. Xavier Brunson has recognized the "centrality" of Korea in the U.S. security strategy in the Indo-Pacific, noting how it hosts "the only United States forces assigned to the Asian continent inside the First Island Chain." Brunson made the remarks during a closed-door discussion themed "Korea as Strategic Key Terrain During Competition, Crisis, and Conflict" held as part of the Honolulu Defense Forum, hosted by Pacific Forum, which took place in the namesake U.S. city from Monday through Tuesday, according to excerpts of the commander's remarks shared by the USFK on Friday. "I think that there's a recognition now of the centrality of Korea and of the peninsula," he said, when asked about views that assess the military commands in Korea as being isolated from other regional security issues. "When we moor ourselves to the peninsula, when that mythology is allowed to continue to exist, what we do is we present less dilemmas to the adversaries of the region," he said. "We show ourselves to be less able and less capable to project power from the peninsu

About 200 people displaced by fire in Seoul's last-remaining shanty town

About 200 people were displaced by a fire Friday that ravaged through a low-income town in southern Seoul, with firefighters putting out the blaze about eight hours after it began, officials said. The fire broke out at around 5 a.m. in the Guryong village, one of the last-remaining shanty towns in Seoul, before being extinguished at 1:28 p.m. No casualties have so far been reported. The fire had quickly spread to other parts of the village, prompting authorities to evacuate 258 people from the area. Some 180 residents are presumed to have lost their homes in the fire. The Seoul city government has set up a temporary shelter at a nearby middle school. Authorities deployed a total of 1,258 personnel and 106 pieces of firefighting equipment to the scene after receiving an initial report of a fire at an unoccupied house. They plan to investigate the exact cause of the blaze. Fire authorities suspect the flames spread quickly as the houses in the area are built with flammable materials, such as thermal cotton and plywood. The Guryong village is located on the fringes of Gangnam, known for the c

Nat'l Assembly passes new special probe bill against ex-President Yoon, wife

The National Assembly, led by the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), passed a bill Friday to launch a new special counsel probe into former President Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law imposition and its aftermath, as well as allegations surrounding his wife. Lawmakers voted 172 for and two against, at a plenary session as the opposition's filibuster to block the bill ended after reaching its 24-hour limit. The bill for the second round of the comprehensive special counsel probe would reopen investigations into alleged insurrection charges related to Yoon's failed martial law bid, along with corruption allegations tied to former first lady Kim Keon Hee and the 2023 death of a Marine, covering 17 allegations that were not fully addressed by the three previous counsels. The move is likely to deepen bipartisan tensions ahead of the local elections in June, with the PPP denouncing the DPK's push as politically motivated and the DPK calling for an end to the aftermath of Yoon's martial law. PPP leader Jang Dong-hyeok launched a hunger strike shortly after Thursday's plenary session began, deman
