'Debt triggers family suicide'

 / YonhapBy Lee Ji-hyeA family that committed suicide because of “living hardships” had considerable assets ― and debts, police say.The family of three was found dead in an apartment on October 30 in southern Incheon, along with a will written by the mother, 45, and her daughter, 12.Almost a week later, Incheon Nambu police said the family owned 15 apartments, each with a 900 million won ($830,000) mortgage. Eleven belonged to the husband, 51, and four to the woman.After they started buying real estate, “the economy started going down and the debt was becoming overwhelming for the family," a police officer told Yonhap News Agency. "We see this as a possible reason for choosing death, but an investigation…is expected to take about a month."The five-page will was written on a notepad by the mother and daughter, expressing the “family's financial difficulties leading to mental pressure,” police said.Police confirmed that the mother had quit her job a month before the family was found dead, and the father had earned 2.1 million won a month.T

JTBC sells song-quiz format - but is it the real one?

"Hidden Singer" host Jun hyun-moo / Courtesy of FacebookJTBC has sold the format for its popular quiz show “Hidden Singer” to U.S. television network giant NBC Universal, an online news service reports. The Korean network, which airs the show every Saturday, signed the deal with Universal Media Studios International, an affiliate of NBC Universal which has produced and distributed  such hit shows as “Top Chef,” “Law & Order” and “The Real Housewives.” NBC has been trying to buy the rights for the past year, according to the website OSEN.  Hidden Singer invites one singer and four impersonators to sing off-stage, and challenges audiences to choose who the actual singer is.The U.S. network is expected to invite international stars and their impersonators.First aired in December 2012, “Hidden Singer” has been a hit, surprising viewers with impersonators who are difficult to distinguish from the real singers.

A gang leader in Seongnam, Gyeonggi province was charged Monday with obstructing justice, after allegedly punching a policeman, MBC reports.The man, in his 40s, was in a police station in Seongnam Monday after getting into a fight while drinking.While he was writing a statement, he suddenly threw a chair.When police tried to handcuff him, he refused, saying, “I am the head of a crime gang, so treat me well.”The man, identified only as Kim, was found to be the head of the largest crime group in Gyeonggi Province.Kim later slapped a police officer's face who tried to stop him smoking in the police station.Kim was charged with obstructing justice.
