Korea's food-delivery app sees huge investments

/ Courtesy of Baedal MinjokA Korean startup specializing in food-delivery services has attracted over 40 billion won ($36.1 million) in investments in its latest round of funding led by Goldman Sachs, reports said.The startup, Woowa Brothers, is attracting attention for its popular online food ordering service called “Baedal Minjok,” which translates to “Delivery Nation.” Woowa’s services currently receive more than 4 million orders each month, the vast majority of which are carried out on its mobile app. Woowa has recently ramped up its efforts to reach out to global customers by starting a joint venture with Naver Corp’s messaging application Line, to offer a food delivery service in Japan. Goldman had not disclosed the amount of the stake it bought in Woowa, Reuters reported.

/ YonhapEducation minister Hwang Woo-yea got doused with water Wednesday when he mistakenly activated an emergency shower during a visit to a university in western Busan.The incident occurred when Hwang was inspecting a laboratory at the University of Erlangen-Nuremburg’s branch campus in the Busan-Jinhae Free Economic Zone. Hwang grabbed a red pull handle, which was part of a shower system intended to wash harmful substances from scientists.  / YonhapPhotos captured the scene as water burst from the showerhead, drenching Hwang.The wet surprise was the result of a misunderstanding, said Kang Sung-cheol, a public relations officer with the ministry. Hwang believed it would be air ― not water ― that would shoot from the nozzle.However, Kang said the minister laughed off the incident as a “special moment.”Netizens dubbed the incident an "unintended Ice Bucket Challenge" after the photographs were published.

Seoul ranks 11th in Facebook likes: report

/ Courtesy of the Korea Tourism OrganizationSeoul ranks 11th among the world’s cities when it comes to Facebook “likes,” according to travel company Travelbooking.com. The company compiled a list of the top 50 cities in terms of the number of likes on their Facebook “city” pages. Seoul has received over 2.1 million likes.Topping the list was New York, with 14.1 million likes, followed by Paris (9.1 million), London (8.5 million) and Los Angeles (7.1 million).Also on the list were Mumbai, which ranked 16th, Bangkok (18) and Indonesia's Bandung (21).

Man flashes dragon tattoos, ditches hospital bill

/ YonhapBusan police issued an arrest warrant Monday for a man who allegedly avoided paying a hospital bill by menacingly showing his dragon tattoo to staff members.The 52-year-old man surnamed Kim is being sought for the “threatening” act and for ditching his bills amounting to 3.5 million won ($3,150).Kim received treatment from the hospital over 21 times for diabetes and related conditions, Busan police said.The suspect is also facing charges for an Aug. 6 incident during which he allegedly assaulted a nurse who tried to hold him back from causing a scene at a dialysis unit.
