KJU's brows: Now you see them, now you don't

/ YonhapWhen North Korean leader Kim Jong-un delivered his New Year's Day speech this week, it wasn't just his apparent shift in attitude towards South Korea that was different.Half of his eyebrows seem to have disappeared. The South China Morning Post published a side-by-side comparison of a photo taken in 2011, and one taken Thursday to illustrate the North Korean leader’s vanishing brows. In the more recent picture, there are two short stubs of hair on Kim’s forehead, compared to what used to be natural-looking arches. "It is only by trawling the photo archives back to around 2011 that one can see the arches of a man who clearly shunned the tweezers," the report said.Outside of what appears to have been some very aggressive tweezing, Kim's posture and outfit were similar to those of his speech two years ago.

Snack companies cater to 'solo kids'

/Courtesy of Imok CommunicationsBy Rachel LeeAs the number of working parents in the country has soared to record levels, food manufacturers are launching various ready-made products for their children. According to Statistics Korea, out of 11.8 million households, 42.9 percent of parents were full-time workers in 2013. This indicates that the number of what the industry refers to as “solo kids,” has also increased. Solo kids are those who take care of themselves while staying home alone. In line with the trend, food makers have launched healthy snack products that can children can prepare on their own with minimum effort. For parents, such products are especially helpful during the winter holidays when kids spend longer hours on their own. For instance, Dole Korea has released a fat-free product called Fruit Ball, which contains 50 percent of recommended daily allowance of vitamin C. The fruit cups contain only fruit and their juices, and are available in three varieties: pineapple, peach and tropical. Binggrae, one of the top snack makers in Korea, introduced its Real Fr

Koreans go all-in on breakfast

/Courtesy of CUBy Rachel LeeMore Koreans appear to be eating breakfast as part of their daily routine.According to CU, the country’s biggest convenience store chain, sales of ready-made meals between 6:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. have been rising steadily over the last two years. Ready-made products include sandwiches and dried seaweed rolls. In 2012, sales in the morning time-slot made up about 18.3 percent of total sales. Last year, they jumped 2.7 percent.“More people are taking control of their health and have started to get into the habit of eating breakfast,” a company spokesman said. “Of our customers who eat breakfast, about 52.6 percent are male and the rest are female. Almost one-third are in their 20s, indicating that students and office workers have breakfast at a nearby store on the way to school and work. “Thanks to the health trend in this country, the ready-meal food market is worth up to 1 trillion won. So we are focusing on developing high-quality products at reasonable prices.”

Plush jackets heat up the winter

/ Courtesy of Acne StudiosBy Rachel LeeWith temperatures continuing to drop and snow already on the ground in Seoul, two jackets have emerged as the most popular items to help keep us toasty this winter.Despite the country’s unfavorable economic conditions, consumers are happily opening up their wallets for the “Velocite” jacket by Swedish fashion house Acne Studios; and a raccoon fur field jacket by Italian clothier Mr & Mrs Furs.Acne Studios, the fashion arm of the creative collective ACNE, has succeeded in bringing the mustang jacket back to the local fashion scene with the Velocite. Despite its high price _ around 3 to 4 million won ($2,700 to $3,600) _ the jacket has become one of the hottest retro items in the country. The Velocite has spawned similar designs by such brands as Jack & Jill and Plastic Island at more affordable prices, around 200,000 won. Kai-aakmann’s mustang jacket sold out thanks to actor Kim woo-bin, who appeared wearing the item frequently in the television drama series “The Inheritors.”  Acne Studios, founded
