Korea's easternmost islets of Dokdo / Korea Times file Seo Kyoung-duk / Korea Times fileSungshin Women’s University professor Seo Kyoung-duk, known for his efforts to promote Korean interests abroad, announced plans Tuesday to host a “hole-in-one” golf challenge on the country’s easternmost islets of Dokdo.Participants in the challenge, held to mark the 70th anniversary of the nation’s independence from Japan, will tee off from Dokdo’s main islet to the east; and shoot for the pin on the main islet to the west.  The distance will cover some 150 meters, making it possible to hole the shot in one stroke.Japan has long claimed ownership of the rocky islets, lying in waters between Korea and Japan, prompting controversy between the sides. “If the golf event is publicized…the world will know about the islets. I am now mapping out a specific plan to do so,” he added.Seo, a liberal arts professor, has made various efforts to counter Japan’s territorial claims. 'Red' video gets green light from Rolling Stone

Hyuna in a scene from her music video "Red" / Courtesy of YouTubeK-pop singer Hyuna from girl group “4Minute” has been praised in prominent pop culture magazine Rolling Stone for her music video “Red.”The magazine rated the music video fifth in its “10 Best Music Videos of 2014.”Rolling Stone’s short online description of “Red” emphasizes how the video adds life to the lyrics, with the words “monkey’s red butt” and “red lipstick” being morphed into a real monkey with a red rump and Hyuna, 24, lying on a giant red lipstick image as she sings. The magazine says the song’s style switches from “hip-hop” to “bubbly pop” to “slinky Middle Eastern electro,” and notes how the video that Korean TV regulators evaluated as “too hot” to broadcast might just fit for an “American crossover.”   Rolling Stone selected Sia’s "Chandelier" as the number one video, followed by DJ Snake’s "Turn Down for What" in second place and Beyonce

Protest against crackdown

Human rights activists protest a planned crackdown on illegal aliens by the local government of Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, in front of its City Hall, Monday. Following the “torso murder,” allegedly committed by illegally-staying Korean Chinese Park Chun-bong, the local government announced a package of anti-crime measures in late December, including a massive crackdown on illegal aliens. KCC Egis' player to avoid punishment after confronting heckler

Ha Seung-jin / Korea Times fileThe Korean Basketball League (KBL) said Monday that KCC Egis center Ha Seung-jin would likely receive a warning after he attempted to confront a female heckler during a game against the Samsung Thunders. The 30-year-old Ha was walking to the locker room after suffering a blow to the face during the game last Thursday. As he walked to the tunnel, an unnamed woman allegedly told Ha to “stop whining and get back on the floor.” Ha, after hearing the comment, attempted to confront the woman but was eventually ushered to the locker room by Thunder staffers. KBL officials were quoted as saying that because no physical contact was made, only a warning would be issued. Reports said that instead of criticizing Ha, many netizens went after the woman, attempting to find her identity and personal information.  Ha, who briefly played for the NBA’s Portland Trailblazers, reportedly broke his nose on the play and will be sidelined for two to three weeks.
