Crawford arrived in Korea to begin work at the Oriental Consolidated Mining Company (OCMC), an American-owned gold mining company, located north of Pyongyang. It wasn’t until late autumn 1904 that he was able to send for his wife, Bertha, and their small son, Rowland, to come to Korea to live with him. It is through Bertha’s letters that we gain some knowledge of what it was like to travel to and live in Korea during the Russo-Japanese War.Bertha and Rowland departed the United States in November 1904 and sailed to Japan and then from there sailed to Korea on a small Japanese steamship. Because of the war, they traveled at nights and anchored in ports during the daytime, although the Russian navy was not operating on the west coast of Korea. Han, who had been appointed on Jan. 2, had faced criticism and opposition from opera-related organizations even before she began her term. They claimed that she lacked professionalism and experience in the field. Seven opera-related organizations had formed an emergency committee to oppose her inauguration. Bukhan north of Seoul, Jan. 4. / Korea Times fileKoreans’ favorite activity is hiking and their most beloved pets are dogs, according to Gallup Korea.In Gallup’s survey of 1,700 Koreans aged 13 and above last October, 14 percent said hiking was their favorite pastime, followed by listening to music (6 percent), sports/working out (5 percent) and playing games (5 percent).Based on age groups, those 40 and above liked hiking but younger males preferred games. Their female counterparts favored listening to music.Soccer was the most popular sport (18 percent), followed by hiking (13 percent), baseball (10 percent) and swimming (8 percent).As for pets, Koreans by far like dogs best (64 percent), followed by cats (9 percent), birds, rabbits and hamsters (all 1 percent).Of breeds, poodles are the most favored (14 percent), followed by Jindo (13 percent), Maltese (12 percent) and shih tzu (10 percent).

Woman on ex-boyfriend bash charge

Police have arrested a woman for allegedly paying five men to beat her ex-boyfriend.According to the Daegu Sungseo Police Department, a man, 32, surnamed Park, and two other men were arrested for violence and causing injuries, along with a woman, 38, surnamed Jang, for contract violence.Jang was quoted as allegedly saying: "I had financial difficulties with my boyfriend, so I contacted a close friend that I frequently met and offered him 8 million won to beat up my ex-boyfriend."Park had allegedly contacted former fellow prisoners to help him beat the man.The five men allegedly assaulted the ex-boyfriend with baseball bats for two hours.
