Walking on overpass

People walk on an overpass connecting Malli-dong and Myeong-dong, central Seoul, Sunday. Cars were banned from traveling along the 400-meter-long overpass after it was opened to pedestrians and had artificial grass and yellow parasols installed. Seoul Mayor Park Won-soon plans to transform the overpass into a park. Skeletons found on attic in Incheon

Several skeletons were found in the attic of a villa in Incheon City on Saturday afternoon, Korean news agency Newsis reports.The landlord found more than 20 skeletons in a cardboard box in Okryun-dong.Incheon Metropolitan Police Agency confirmed that the box belonged to a man, 56, surnamed Choi, whose job was to care for the remains of people who had no family or friends. “Choi had not paid rent for a year, and then disappeared, which is why we were moving his belongings into the attic,” the landlord said.“That’s when one of the people moving his belongings found this box full of bones.”Police, who are looking for Choi, believe he kept the bones at home because of financial difficulties.

Weighty finding on Atkins diet

 / Courtesy of mid life rocks blog The popular Atkins diet may lead to weight gain, a study has found.According to the Rovira i Virgili University in Spain, high-protein diets have nothing to do with weight loss in the long run, and cause health problems.The diet regime encourages dieters to eat steak instead of bread and potatoes."Higher dietary protein intake is associated with long-term increased risk of body weight gain and overall death in a Mediterranean population at high cardiovascular risk," the Daily Mail quoted a researcher as saying."At the moment, no evidence supports the use of high-protein diets as a strategy to lose weight long-term. However, there is some evidence, including our study, showing the negative effect of a high-protein diet on other clinical outcomes."

Quarter of elderly people live alone

/ Yonhap By Rachel LeeAlmost a quarter of older people in Seoul live alone, a survey has found.According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG), 24 percent of those 60 and over live by themselves. The number of over-65s living alone reached 253,302 in 2013. In 2007, it was 158,424.“The figure is expected to grow as the number of married couples without children and single households has been increasing,” an SMG official said.The SMG said that the number of elderly living alone was expected to go up by 227,000 by 2030.More than 70 percent of the over 60s questioned in 2013 did not wish to live with their children, with 54.8 percent of them living alone, according to Statistics Korea.More than a third said they felt more comfortable living separately. Thirty-four percent said they chose to live alone because they could afford it, while 23 percent said they did not want to burden their children.“We are coming up with various plans to help people take part in social activities even after retirement and also with health-related issues like dementia,” the S

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare Friday, domestic and international adoptions totaled 1,172 last year, up 250 from 2013. Domestic adoptions fell by 49 to 637 while international adoptions were up 299 to 535.The increase in international adoptions comes from the implementation of the international adoption process, which began in the second quarter of 2013. About 40 percent of applications made in 2013 were approved in 2014.“The total adoption volume will either remain or decrease considering the number of parents who give up raising their children and adoptive parents,” a ministry official said. The ministry also said it planned to expand financial support for adopted children aged16 and under. Currently, children 15 and under receive the home care allowance.
