Quarter of elderly people live alone
/ Yonhap By Rachel LeeAlmost a quarter of older people in Seoul live alone, a survey has found.According to the Seoul Metropolitan Government (SMG), 24 percent of those 60 and over live by themselves. The number of over-65s living alone reached 253,302 in 2013. In 2007, it was 158,424.“The figure is expected to grow as the number of married couples without children and single households has been increasing,” an SMG official said.The SMG said that the number of elderly living alone was expected to go up by 227,000 by 2030.More than 70 percent of the over 60s questioned in 2013 did not wish to live with their children, with 54.8 percent of them living alone, according to Statistics Korea.More than a third said they felt more comfortable living separately.
