South Korean arrested on charge of murdering wife, son in Hong Kong

By Park Si-sooHong Kong police have arrested a South Korean man on suspicion of murdering his wife and seven-year-old son at the five-star Ritz-Carlton hotel, according to Reuters. The two were found dead in a room at 8:30 a.m. The man reportedly appeared drunk and injured. He was arrested at the scene and sent to hospital.Further details were not available immediately. The Ritz-Carlton is on the top 15 floors of Hong Kong’s tallest building, the International Commerce Center, and overlooks Victoria Harbor, according to Reuters.

One dead, five injured when taxi suddenly accelerates in Seoul

By Kang Aa-young, Park Si-sooA taxi suddenly accelerated out of an outdoor car-wash center in Seoul, Saturday, killing one person, injuring five and damaging 11 vehicles.Police are investigating the cause of the deadly sudden acceleration. The taxi driver, surnamed Ahn, 70, is said to have been sober. The accident happened in Gangseo-gu, Seoul, at around 4:40 p.m. The taxi was slowly moving out of an outdoor car-wash machine, when, according to the driver, the vehicle “suddenly galloped forward shortly after he turned the steering wheel left.” The car rammed six cars in the compound, five on the road and struck a man standing nearby. The man was rushed to hospital, but he died. Five passengers in the damaged cars were injured. “An investigation is under way,” said a police officer. “We are working to identify the cause (of the accident) with multiple sources of evidence, including footage from the taxi’s dash cam.”

Court orders to freeze assets of Park Geun-hye

By Kim Se-jeongA Seoul court on Friday accepted prosecutors’ request to freeze assets owned by ousted President Park Geun-hye who is on trial for corruption.The Seoul Central District Court issued its ruling on her assets worth at least 5.8 billion won ― her Seoul home worth 2.8 billion won, 3 billion won cash held by her lawyer Yoo Young-ha and an unknown amount in her savings account ― until her final verdict. The prosecution made the request for fear of her assets being sold off or transferred. Park faces 20 corruption charges, two of which involve allegations she received bribes from the National Intelligence Service between May 2013 and July 2016. According to the prosecution, she received at least 3.65 billion won ($3.43 million).She used that money to cover her medical expenses and buy personal mobile phones. She also gave part of that money as cash gifts to her close aides in Cheong Wa Dae. The prosecution continues to investigate whether her confidante Choi Soon-sil received any part of that money.

A quarrel over a trivial matter started the shocking violence. In the smoking room, Park mistakenly hit the hand of a stranger, surnamed Song. The two argued and exchanged blows.In anger, Park attacked another man, surnamed Jung, who had nothing to do with their fight. Park then attacked a waiter surnamed Choi, who tried to calm him down, and others in the bar randomly.During the trial, Park claimed he did not intend to kill anyone, but the court did not accept this because he repeatedly attacked the victims. Teacher sexually harassed five schoolgirls, police say

By Kang Aa-young Korea Times filePolice have arrested a male middle school teacher in Gwangju on charges of sexually harassing and beating his students.The teacher, 54, is suspected of having molested girls and beaten boys at the school from last July until September, according to Gwangju Bukbu police station Tuesday.The suspect allegedly tried to chastise a girl who wore red lipstick by touching her lips and feeling her hair and ears. He also is accused of punishing boys by physically abusing them. Five girls and two boys reported the alleged incidents to police. The teacher told police he had only tried to educate the boys using harsh methods. He said he had never sexually harassed the girls.“We investigated all the students in the school and found an additional nine students who were allegedly victimized by the teacher,” a police spokesman said.“But because the nine have not been identified, we will send the suspect’s case to prosecutors with charges for offences against the seven students for now.”

He appeared under alcoholic influence, the police said. The Russian, 44, is suspected of having made the unwanted advance, while the woman was helping him connect his mobile phone to wireless internet at the center, the police said. The Russian denied the charge. He was quoted as telling the police, “I kissed her as a token of my appreciation, and the charge is a misunderstanding stemming from cultural differences."The police secured video footage from the center’s surveillance camera. The sailor's behavior comes under the category of indecent assault in Russia, the police said.

Missing woman found dead

 By Park Si-sooA woman who had been missing for five on Jeju Island has been found dead, police said Monday.The body of Park Joo-sun, 28, was found at a beach in Tap-dong at around 2 p.m. An investigation is under way to find the cause of death.Park was last seen at a convenience store in Donam-dong, Jeju, at around 4 p.m. last Thursday, according to police. CCTV footage shows her wearing black pants, a blue T-shirt and a gray long-padded jacket.Police said she returned home drunk at around 2 p.m. on Thursday after having a meal with colleagues. She then left home after telling her mother that she was going to see her friends.
