Chief justice hints at continuing probe into blacklist of judges

The Supreme Court of KoreaBy Kim Se-jeongChief Justice Kim Myeong-su hinted Wednesday he would continue the search for a blacklist of judges, which a special committee failed to find.“I will complement the investigation results and will form a new body to discuss where to go from here,” Kim said in a statement. “As the court has done until now, we will work our way out of this mess on our own.” His statement came two days after the internal committee’s announcement of its investigation findings. Although it failed to confirm the alleged blacklist, it said the court’s administrative body had monitored judges who were critical of the two previous governments and their activities, for years. Drunken driving rules to get tough

By Kim Se-jeong The government will take tougher action against drunken driving by lowering the blood alcohol limit for suspending a person’s license to 0.03 percent from the current 0.05 percent to reduce the number of traffic accidents caused by drunken drivers.An average adult could be charged for drunken driving if they consume only a shot of soju, according to the officials.The government also plans to lower the inner city speed limit to 50 kilometers per hour from the current 60. “These measures are to protect pedestrians who are often victims of traffic accidents,” the government said Tuesday. “We’ll hold drivers more responsible.” With the new measures, the government is aiming to lower the number of accidents to below 2,000 per year.According to the Interior Ministry, 4,191 people were killed in traffic accidents in 2017 across the country, higher than the government’s goal of 3,000. Sailor kills captain over late wages payment

He is suspected of stabbing the captain to death in a back street in Gunsan, North Jeolla Province, at 10:15 p.m. Tuesday. The suspect admitted the crime, saying he stabbed the victim with a knife after the captain ignored repeated calls to pay wages of 7 million won ($6,540), police said.The suspect said he had received nothing for five months.

The blaze also damaged part of the eight-story building.The blaze was reported at 1:53 a.m. Firefighters rescued 34 guests and put out the fire in about 30 minutes. Three people were taken to hospital after inhaling toxic fumes. Officials are investigating what caused the blaze.
