VIDEO Korean Air chief's wife allegedly harassing employees

/ Captured from JTBCBy Park Si-soo A video clip showing a woman presumed to be Korean Air chairman Cho Yang-ho's wife harassing workers was revealed Monday in yet another setback to the company's “owner” family that has been in trouble after Cho's second daughter's abuse of power inside the company ignited a nationwide uproar. JTBC first showed the clip on its prime time news show. Cho's wife, Lee Myung-hee, is currently under a “preliminary” police investigation for alleged physical and verbal violence against workers hired to renovate her Seoul residence in Seoul in 2013. See the clip: https://bit.ly/2K9jkaoJTBC said the clip was recorded in May 2014 at a construction site for the Incheon Hyatt Hotel. The hotel belongs to Korean Air. If the woman in the film is proven to be Lee, it's more likely that the ongoing “preliminary” investigation could turn into a formal one.The airline said it is hard to discern if the woman is Lee.

Ewha Hospital withdraws application for highest medical facility status

A Seoul hospital responsible for the deaths of four newborns late last year said Monday that it has voluntarily withdrawn its application to be given the highest-ranking medical facility status. The infants died while being treated at the neonatal intensive care unit of Ewha Womans University Medical Center in Mokdong, Seoul. Forensic results confirmed that their deaths were all caused by a type of bacteria that can be fatal to immunocompromised patients.Following the incident, health authorities put on hold the evaluation process for giving the university medical center tertiary general hospital status, which can allow it to treat critically ill patients. The designation also benefits hospitals because they can get higher health insurance fees."The latest decision is in line with the hospital's stance to take full responsibility for the deaths and to share the pain of the affected family members," said Moon Byung-in, the hospital's chief administrator, in a press release.Police concluded that the hospital's neonatal intensive care unit had consistently violated anti-infection guideli

Prosecutors seek death penalty for motel arsonist

Police officials inspect a burned motel in the Jongno district of Seoul, on Jan. 21.  / YonhapBy Park Si-soo Prosecutors on Monday sought the death penalty for a middle-aged man accused of setting fire to a motel in Jongno-gu, Seoul, in January, killing seven people and injuring three. The alleged arsonist, 53, surnamed Yoo, pled guilty to the crime and begged for mercy. At a trial hearing in Seoul Central District Court, the prosecution asked the judge for capital punishment, saying his crime was “prepared with intention to kill people.”The suspect claimed the crime took place when he was “drunk” so he “couldn't make a right judgment” at that time. “All the evidence and testimonies show the accused, who was sober, poured gasoline on the floor (of the motel), set it on fire and checked if the fire was catching before leaving the building,” the prosecutor said. “It doesn't make sense that he committed the crime while he was drunk.”Court documents say Yoo committed the crime at 3 a.m. on Jan. 20 after a motel manager rejec

By Lee Kyung-min Hanjin Group Cho Yang-ho removed his two daughters from company management, in a move to limit blowback on the company over the fast-spreading controversy over their “anger management issues.” “I offer my deepest apology to the victims, company officials and the public at large on behalf of my daughters' misbehavior,” Cho said in a press statement. “I will have my daughters Cho Hyun-ah and Cho Hyun-min resign as KAL Hotel president and Korean Air senior executive, respectively.
