Military personnel jailed for battery

By Kim Hyun-binThe top court has upheld a lower court ruling that sentenced two members of the military to two years in prison, each, for habitually assaulting their subordinates, Thursday. “We found the suspects guilty after reviewing the evidence,” the Supreme Court said in the ruling. The two suspects, First Lieutenant Choi and Staff Sergeant Kim, were indicted for assault, intimidation and hazing of more than 10 soldiers stationed at a general outpost in Hwacheon, Gangwon Province, from 2016 to 2017. The two were violent and abusive toward their subordinates, including using an iron-cutting machine to break soldiers' fingernails as well as taping soldiers' hands to pull-up bars. Online broadcasters seek sexual content for more viewer attention

By Lee Kyung-min An online platform known for its adult content recently aired a piece in which a man, who identifies himself as broadcast jockey, a live streaming show host, asked a female Chinese tourist to have a drink with him near Hongik University in Seoul, commonly called Hongdae, late at night. It was apparent that the young woman was not able to fully communicate in Korean, but the man used all sorts of body language to entice her to go with him, and they ended up in a small bar together. What she might think as a fun, harmless instant date turned into sexual harassment after the man bombarded her with a slew of uncomfortable questions: “Do you know a Korean culture where people have one-night stands?” “Do Chinese people also have one-night stands?” “When was your first (sexual experience)?” Besides highly misleading remarks on what he claimed to be “Korean culture,” the show turned more salacious from then on. When the woman was about to kiss the man on his cheek after losing a “game,” the man turned his head and k

Park may face additional charge of meddling in court ruling

By Lee Kyung-min Former President Park Geun-hye, now in jail after being found guilty of corruption, will be questioned over an allegation that she was involved in an abuse of power scandal by the upper levels of the judiciary. The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office said Wednesday its investigators had searched the foreign ministry and found evidence of Park's involvement. In the scandal, former Supreme Court Chief Justice Yang Sung-tae sought to use politically sensitive trials as leverage to establish a de facto “Second Supreme Court.” The top court's administrative body, the National Court Administration (NCA) was mobilized to achieve this goal. Park allegedly ordered her chief of staff Kim Ki-choon to meet with top court officials under Yang to get them to delay or overturn an earlier verdict in a civil suit filed against a Japanese firm by a group of Koreans who were forced laborers during the 1910-45 Japanese occupation. The top court has been _ for unclear reasons _ delaying further deliberation on the case, which the Japanese firm appealed after the top co

You can get away with distributing nude selfies, says university group

Sending a voluntarily taken nude selfie to someone else necessitates risking not just its distribution to third parties but also a legal disclaimer that responsibility is on the sender, not the distributor, according to the sexual violence act in Korea. Korea Times fileBy Ko Dong-hwanDistributing nude selfies taken by someone else does not transgress Korea's sexual violence laws, according to a student body at Hanyang University. The anti-violence activist group came across a case involving a student of the school who distributed nude pictures of his girlfriend she had taken and sent to him.
