Filipinos hold festival in Incheon

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff reporter With the hot summer sun, colorful banners, stalls selling pancit noodles and puto (rice cakes) and the unmistakable chatter of Tagalog, it could have been like any other fiesta being held in the Philippines. Except this was a celebration for their home country’s 112th Independence Day and Migrant Worker’s Day being held in Korea. Hundreds of Filipinos, who are living and working in Korea, flocked to the fiesta at the Pupyeong Community Welfare Center, Incheon on Sunday. It was the first time for the celebrations to be held outside Seoul, much to the delight of Filipinos living in the area. ``It’s a good idea to have this event in Incheon so people can see our talents and how active we are in Incheon. Foreigners enjoy World Cup games

By John Redmond Contributing writer With World Cup fever hitting the peninsula, social gatherings with big screen TVs in public places are a must for watching games featuring South Korea. However, as in the case of last Saturday’s 3.30 a.m. England versus U.S. match, the choices of large screens with equally large gatherings become significantly reduced. Experiencing the World Cup back in 2002, all games were played at local time, and due to overwhelming support for the national team, even those unfortunate to be in the office or in a classroom during a South Korean game would soon find themselves rewarded with a much needed break. Most pubs in the expat neighborhood of Itaewon would screen most games as a means of attracting a surge in foreign nationals to the nation’s capital. The three main players at the time were Hollywood Bar and Grill, 3 Alley Pub and Seoul Pub. Put simply, back then they were the only big names, apart from Nashville, in town. During the 2006 World Cup, again, big screens in public places were the order of the day, however, due to the time

Dano festival cooking class In June, there is a traditional Korean festival day known as Dano. To celebrate this, the Itaewon-Hannam Global Village Center will be going to the Soodo Cooking Academy to learn how to make two dishes associated with this festival day. The first dish is a type rice cake called suritchit-ddeok. It has a circular shape and its green color comes from the suritchit leaves that are used when making it. The second is chogyetang or cold chicken and vegetable salad in water. This is a great dish to beat the early summer heat. The event will be at the Soodo Cooking Academy in Jongno, Seoul on June 18 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. To get there, take subway to Jongno 5-ga station (Line 1) and leave via exit 3. Walk straight about 50 meters. For a map visit: http://www.soodocooking.co.kr/intro01-06.asp The cost is 12,000won and anyone wishing to sign up must come to the center in person to register and pay the fee.
