Musical 'All That Jazz' to be staged in Yongsan Arts Center The musical All That Jazz will be performed at 8 p.m. on weekdays. On Saturdays, there are two performances at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m, and on Sundays, but at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. The only exceptions are on Feb. 9, where there is a performance at 3 p.m. and on Feb. 14 at 8 p.m. There are no performances Mondays. The cost for Section A is 15,000 won; Section S, 45,000 won and Section R, 55,000 won with a 30 percent discount for Yongsan-gu residents. SCI to perform at Roofers in Itaewon

By John Redmond Seoul City Improv comedy group will perform its first show for 2011 on Jan. 22 at Roofers Rooftop Restaurant in Itaewon from 8 to 10 p.m. The group will be doing a combination of short-form improvisation games in the style of “Who’s Line is it Anyway?” as well as long-form improvisation. Admission to the event is free. The year 2010 was good for SCI ― in addition to having many performances here in Seoul, SCI traveled internationally to perform improv in Taiwan and Japan. In 2011, the troupe plans to travel to Hong Kong, Beijing, and Canada to perform as well. The event is free and donations are encouraged. Seoul City Improv was founded in July 2007 by Margaret Whittum, an American actor/director working in Seoul. The first preview show was at the Big Electric Cat in Itaewon. Atlanta native English teacher wins award in Seoul

By John Redmond Atlanta native Stephen Campbell has been awarded the Native Speaking English Teacher (NSET) award for 2010 by the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education (SMOE) last December. Campbell, a teacher and champion soccer coach, who came to Seoul in August 2008 is from a semi-rural community outside Atlanta, Georgia where he lived for over 20 years. He spoke to The Korea Times of his adjustment to living in Seoul “I came to Seoul to teach for SMOE in August 2008. Before that, I lived in the same ZIP code in a semi-rural community outside Atlanta, Georgia for over 20 years. It was a big adjustment, as was going from a three bedroom house with a big lawn to living in a smallish officetel. “I began teaching in 1986, and coaching in 1990 ― I am a Georgia state champion soccer coach. Working in independent schools, you wear a lot of hats; while I began as a math and science teacher, I eventually taught computer, became school webmaster and photographer; I ran the summer camp program at my school for several years. Donation drive for food and school supplies The donation drive for food and school supplies ended on Dec. 28. The Itaewon-Hannam Global Village Center collected donations during the month of December for families in need and social welfare centers in the area. They accepted donations of non-perishable food items and school supplies for children. The food items were distributed to lowincome families in the area through the Yongsan Food Bank, and the school supplies will go to study rooms for children whose parents cannot afford to send them to expensive academies. We will have a “Global Village Tree” set up in the center where we will be collecting the items for the kids. Seongsan Sunrise Peak is a great place to celebrate New Year

By John Redmond As most expats have taken off back to their native countries to spend the festive season with family and friends many still remaining in Korea might feel a little out of sorts as to how to celebrate New Year’s Eve. For most westerners it is a time to spend with friends and loved ones and have that final party for the year before sticking to a New Year’s resolution. In such cases a night club, pub, or a very crowded outdoor public place is usually the venue of choice with many opting for the latter. Think fireworks on the Thames in London or Australia’s Sydney Harbour Bridge, or the very high profile celebrations at Times Square in New York. For others, the chance to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city is always an alternative worth pursuing. Jeju Island, home to the Natural World Heritage Site Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes, hosts an event called the Seongsan Sunrise Festival.
