Seoul Players to present ‘Streetcar‘ by Tennessee Williams

By John Redmond Seoul Players will present Tennessee Williams’ searing masterpiece, “A Streetcar Named Desire” at Club Moon Night in Itaewon. From March 17 through April 1, “Come experience the heat, passion, violence and madness of 1940's New Orleans!” “Streetcar” is a 1947 play written by American playwright Tennessee Williams for which he received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1948. Widely considered a landmark play, it deals with a culture clash between two characters, Blanche DuBois, a relic of the Old South, and Stanley Kowalski, a rising member of the industrial, urban working class. Seoul Players is an English-speaking community theater company based in Seoul. It was formed in late 2001 as a non-profit organization by Roman Zolnierczyk, an Australian business executive and keen thespian. The group of (mostly) ex-pats delights in bringing English-language theater to audiences here in Seoul. Bringing the art world closer

By Agnes Yu While visiting the enviable art galleries and museums in London many years ago my companion remarked how lucky young English schoolchildren were, to be able to see such impressive paintings and historical items on field trips and whenever they wanted actually. As an aspiring industrial designer, he commented that just having that kind of exposure to eclectic art and diverse motivating influences from early on automatically nurtured a better, more enlightened aesthetic. He compared it to his own childhood, growing up in a design desert, thirsty for more inspiration and creative nurturing. Indeed, despite the grander art exhibits these days, 25 years ago a childhood in Seoul would have been rather lacking in chances to see foreign artwork. Efforts have been made gradually to change this and one significant exhibit was the Keith Haring show held in 2010 at the SOMA Museum of Art in Seoul Olympic Park. St. Patrick‘s Day festival due

By John Redmond The Irish Association of Korea (IAK) is busy finalizing preparations for this year’s St. Patrick’s Day Festival as it has done for over 10 years and is in fact one of the largest annual expat events in Seoul. The IAK invites people from all nationalities to join them this year. Last year’s music and dance festival in Insadong saw over 10,000 people participating. As before visitors can enjoy traditional Irish music performed by well-known musicians in Seoul, more upbeat Irish rock music, and the ceili, a traditional Irish group dance. After the dancing troop performs a few sets, the public will be invited to join. Later, there are plans to host a musical hooley (a traditional Irish evening of music, song and dance). Guests can select from a range of Irish foods to sample, fun for kids (including face painting and balloon art) and sporting demonstrations by the Seoul Gaels. International Women’s Day reception due

By John Redmond Last year, people around the world marked the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day (IWD). In March 1911, more than 1 million women and men attended IWD rallies campaigning for women's rights to work, vote, be trained, to hold public office and end discrimination. “Connecting Girls, Inspiring Futures” is the theme of the 2012 International Women’s Day. With this in mind, the International Women’s Day Korea Organizing Committee, together with co-host, Seoul Foundation of Women & Family, will be holding a networking reception and panel discussion on March 9 at Seoul Women’s Plaza in Daebang-dong, Seoul. The event will focus on the present and future of girls/women in the sciences. Park Hyun-kyung, president of Seoul Foundation of Women & Family, will honor guests by officially opening the event. The panel includes three women educators with a wealth of experience and knowledge regarding women and girls in the sciences.
