Two Hotels With Many Different Charms

The Grand InterContinental Seoul and the COEX InterContinental Seoul in southern Seoul have long been loved by international businessmen. Their success is largely attributed to their superb location near the Korea World Trade Center, COEX Convention and Exhibition Center, Casino, City Air Terminal, duty free shop and COEX Mall with over 200 shops. More importantly, the success of the two deluxe hotels came from a strong commitment to offer the best service without maintaining the status quo. However, the two hotels have been attracting travelers, businessmen and diners with unique attractions. Since it opened its doors in 1988, the Grand InterContinental Seoul has maintained a reputation for both its state-of-the-art facilities and its distinctive Korean-style ambience. Of note is the hotel's lobby with soaring curves, marble pillars and a multi colored traditional ceiling, which greets guests with elements that serve to create a sophisticated yet traditional Korean ambiance. The chic Korean mood is complemented with furniture and window treatments inspired once

Relish Chic Urban Dishes at Fifty

By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Whether it's for a leisurely brunch or a quick bite, afternoon tea or a round of drinks at night, Fifty is the place to be. The restaurant-cafe defines urban chic with healthful bites of mean meals and savory desserts. Sitting out on the patio or inside the open space with its high ceiling and white-plastered brick wall, it's like being at a hip Meatpacking District eatery in New York, or a Parisian bistro with the French menu written across chalkboards. Tarines, a slice of crispy bread topped with various combinations of meats and veggies, are a must here. Meat-lovers, fancy the tartine carpaccio boeuf cuit (grilled beef), and vegetarians, relish leafy tartines with tomato and mozzarella cheese or les champignons avec le vin saladier (mushroom salad with wine dressing). You can see the owner and chef Chang Yong-han, 35, serve guests with a big smile. The former designer studied at the prestigious culinary school Cordon Bleu in France, where he specialized in both cuisine and patisseries. 50 Tresor pasta, with huge chunks of mozzarella ch

Counting Sheep? Flicking Channels?

Time to Seek Aid for Possible Sleeping Disorder By Bae Keun-min Staff Reporter Yoo Jin-sun, 34, often secretly snatches a 15- to 20-minute power nap in the afternoon at a restroom in his office, avoiding the gaze of his supervisor, to make up for a lack of good night sleep. Yoo works late into the night and comes to the office early in the morning. Even after office hours he has to meet with clients for dinner or often for drinking, resulting in irregular sleeping hours and a slackening in his otherwise tight performance. Yoo's lifestyle has prevented him from getting a full night's sleep at home during weekdays. His is a lifestyle not much different from those of most Korean men and women, prompting a case of a national epidemic of sleep disorders. ``I get stressed a lot from work in and out of the office. I feel so tired all day. Lately, I am even having a hard time in falling deep asleep as I am so worried about getting to the office on time in the morning,'' Yoo said. ``I think I need to get some help.'' Tree-Lined Street

Savor, Shop & Stroll in Style By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Seoul is no longer envious of Soho in New York City or the Marais in Paris. Lined with tall, green ginkgo trees and quirky little shops with an attitude, Garosu-gil (Tree-Lined Street) thrives with flair. This tiny strip of Sinsa-dong is the perfect place to window shop during the day and sip wine coolers after the sun goes down. The hotspot is thoroughly modern and chic, without the glitziness of Cheongdam-dong. Below is a selective guide to places where you can savor 'n' sip, see 'n' spend in style! Alley Antique Cafe: Relive the splendor of a 19th century French salon while enjoying Dallmayr espresso (served in the German royal court, 7,000 won) with cheesecake (4,000 won). If you fancy the armchair you're sitting in, you can strike a deal with the owner -- the cafe doubles as an antique furniture store. A friendly middle-aged couple runs the place, and the wife visits France every two months to import antiques. The place also boasts a fine wine list of over 20 kinds from all over the world (French Chatea

Jeongdongjin: Romantic Place on East Coast

By Oleg Kiriyanov Contributing writer It would probably be difficult to find a South Korean who does not know the Jeongdongjin Railway Station situated on the seashore of the East Sea. Some people think that this is the most romantic and beautiful place in the whole country. Well, that probably depends on the taste but it is not difficult to argue that Jeongdongjin is a really beautiful spot of the seashore: a big nice sand beach, beautiful rocks and mountains, and emerald seawater. At the same time you can easily find lots of similar beautiful spots on that seashore but they are not as well-known as Jeongdongjin. It became famous after a few touching scenes of a popular (at the time) Korean drama ``Hourglass'' were filmed there. That is why the souvenir shops of that area are full of various modifications of hourglasses. In the middle of the small but nice park situated near the Jeongdongjin beach, there is one very special hourglass, which became probably the main attraction and symbol of the area. Opened on the first day of 2000, that hourglass is more than eight m
