Korea's beaches are packed with people throughout the summer, but many places have special events to make one's experience at the beach more enjoyable. The 10th Boryeong Mud Festival, held at the Daecheon Beach, South Chungcheong Province, is one event where it's okay to get dirty. The mud festival runs from July 14 to 22. Since the mud on the beach has qualities that are good for the skin, it is highly recommended that visitors slather on as much mud as they can on their bodies. The mud contains mi

Taste of Austrian Dishes at Chef Meilis

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter In our search for authentic Austrian food in Seoul, several people recommended Chef Meili's, a new restaurant owned by former Hilton Hotel executive chef Christian Meilinger. Chef Meili's, located on the second floor of the building near Gecko's Terrace in Itaewon, may not seem like much from the outside. But once you enter the restaurant, there is a warm, down-to-earth atmosphere. We were pleasantly surprised to be led to the rooftop area, which was decorated with flowers and plants, and offers a refreshing view of Itaewon's streets. It was a good thing the weather not hot, so we didn't mind sitting outside at a wooden bench and table with red umbrellas. We decided to start with a sausage salad (12,500 won), a bright mix of fresh lettuce, yellow and red peppers, tomatoes, carrots, onions and tasty sausage slices in a light dressing. Chef Meili's menu has several meat and fish dishes to choose from, but we decided to order the daily special, a dish featuring different kinds of smoked fish and braised beef roulade with spaetzle.

Hotels Offer Business-Friendly Services

By Kim Tae-jong Staff Reporter Many local hotels have seen a decrease in room occupancy rates and now seek a niche market to make up for the loss. The decrease in the number of guests at hotels is largely attributed to the reduction of international travelers to resorts and tourist attractions here. But as the nation attracts businessmen from all around the world, hotels also start to see them as emerging target customers and try to come up with new services to attract them. ``We keep losing traveling guests coming here due to the strong performance of the won as well as many newly-opened hotels,'' Daniel Eo, director of sales at the InterContinental Hotel, said. ``But there seems to be an increasing number of businessmen, who seek better services at hotels.'' The solution is to attract international businessmen by offering them what they want _ various meeting rooms, facilities, services and devices to help facilitate their business, he said. The hotel has large-scale convention halls and big conference rooms as most other big hotels, but now it also offers more

Staying Healthy in Rainy Season

By Bae Keun-min Staff Reporter The onset of the monsoon season last weekend is providing some relief from the scorching summer weather. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), this year's rainy season will last until the end of July. ``It is forecast that this year's rainy season (June 21-July 30) will be normal in duration,'' KMA senior forecaster Kim Seung-bai told The Korea Times. South Korea sees an estimated annual precipitation of 1,400 mm, 40 percent of which falls during the monsoon season. ``In recent years, the localized torrential downpours were concentrated in short periods during this season, which is worrisome,'' Kim said. ``If there is not enough rain during this season, we could suffer water shortages in the winter and the following spring.'' However, seasonal weather conditions may give people a hard time in maintaining their health; a somewhat drastic difference in temperatures on a sunny day from a rainy one can make the immune system vulnerable. The high humidity may weaken the body's ability to emit heat and balance its

Diwan-i-Am Offers Quality Indian Cuisine

By Seo Dong-shin Staff Reporter Earlier this year, those who frequent the small alleys dotted with clubs, bars, and cafes near Hongik University would shoot curious glances at a particular building under construction. Located inside one of those alleys, across from the Design Museum, a white building was taking on an odd shape: what was looming inside? Last month, it turned out to be a brand-new Indian restaurant, named Diwan-i-Am, the building resembling a mosque or palace. The name of the restaurant derives from the Hall of Public Audiences presided over by rulers of the Mughal Empire in India. Diwan-i-Am is aiming to be a little different from existing Indian restaurants in Seoul. The interior is by far the neatest among its peers here. A two-story building with a yet unfinished terrace, the restaurant has a cozy yet exotic atmosphere at the same time. Four chefs in the kitchen are all from India, recruited from Marriott Hotels across India, a friendly and proud Korean manager tells us. Together with the Korean staff, an Indian chef attends to guests while we order,
