Marakech Offers Moroccan Taste

By April Choi Korea Times Intern Marakech Night II offers something new in Itaewon's international cuisine scene. It’s the place to go for those craving Moroccan food or a taste of the exotic. Rhiti Mostafa, the owner-operator, was once a chef for the Moroccan ambassador in Seoul. A polyglot, he speaks French, Arabic and English. The family-run restaurant is cozy with only a few tables. The restaurant is decorated mainly in red with tajine dishes and hand-made lamps scattered about. The national flag and pictures of Morocco are displayed on the wall while Moroccan music plays softly in the background. There is also a shisa (Moroccan tobacco) or what is better known as hookah room in the back. This is wildly popular with both Koreans and foreigners; some people come to the restaurant just for this. We ordered provincial kofta (meatballs with tomato sauce and spices), lamb kebab which came with rice and salad and pita bread. For those who don't favor lamb, alternatives include chicken, minced meat or a combo. Pita bread (1,000 won) is similar to naan except it is a

Sommeliers’ Tips to Select Summer Wines

By Kim Tae-jong Staff Reporter To many, beer may well be the best thirst-quencher for hot summer days. But sommeliers say there are also many ways to enjoy wine in the sultry weather. The following are some tips for wine lovers by famous sommeliers at local hotels _ Eun Dae-whan at Ritz-Carlton, Seoul, Seo Won-sun at Millennium Seoul Hilton and Eom Kyung-ja at the InterContinental Seoul. Ritz-Carlton, Seoul ``I think mild and soft white wines are better as strong ones can make you easily drunk in the hot weather. It may ruin your short vacation,'' Eun Dae-whan said. He recommended Kabinett, Spatlese and Auslese, which are available from 30,000 to 50,000 won. To enjoy ``cold'' wine, he said some ice with Icewein of Germany or Sauternes of France in a glass with a slice of lemon squeezed can bring a tasteful result. ``The two wines have a high sugar content, which may make it hard to enjoy them. But the strong wines can be mild and cold thanks to ices and they are quite tasty,'' he said. Millennium Seoul Hilton As the best summer wine, Seo Won-sun recomm

Renaissance of Hanbok

Tradition Wears Modern Edge On and Off the Screen By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Classics are timeless _ and fluid. Like a stream of water trickling down twisting new paths, they are open to modern interpretation with changing times, though retaining their essence. And in such fashionable style explodes the ``renaissance'' of hanbok, as TV dramas and movies spotlight the Korean traditional dress' fresh makeover. KBS TV series ``Hwang Jin Yi'' topped viewership when it aired last fall by celebrating the classic beauty of hanbok through the fictionalized story of the most illustrious 16th century gisaeng, or female entertainer and artist, of the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910). Designer Kim Hye-soon produced original looks with hints of modernity, and sizzled up the rather lukewarm public's interest in hanbok. ``Hanbok is regarded as an uncomfortable garment worn only for weddings or traditional festivals. I wanted to recreate hanbok as attire that can be worn like a party dress, something people would be willing to wear despite the hassle,'' Kim told The Korea Times. The

Chinese Restaurant Lives Up to Its Name

By Kim Tae-jong Staff Reporter At the Grand Hyatt Seoul, there is no chance of confusing which restaurant serves Chinese cuisine. The in-house Chinese restaurant is simply called ``The Chinese Restaurant.’’ The name may not be creative, but the restaurant’s chefs believe it represents the restaurant’s commitment to offering authentic Chinese food in an authentic manner _ no compromises or ``fusion’’ dishes here. ``Customers are able to taste dishes that have never been prepared before in Korea,’’ Sidney Hardy, executive chef of the hotel, said. ``The Chinese Restaurant’s main focus is inviting customers to experience Chinese dishes authentically.’’ To live up to its commitment, the restaurant has recently undergone a big change in menus and services. After two weeks of renewal, the restaurant re-opened on June 25. Jack Aw Yong, executive chef from Hyatt International, also joined the project with the association of Hardy and other chefs. Yong is in charge of Hyatt chains’ restaurant management in menus and services. The restaurant’s new theme is ``home-style servi
