`A Table Serves Tastes of Lavish French Cuisine

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter French cuisine is known as one of the world's most refined and lavish, requiring many hours in finishing its ``artistic'' meals. But anyone who wants to savor French dishes is welcomed at ``A Table'' located in Samcheong-dong, central Seoul, with exquisite flavors but relatively decent prices. The French restaurant is a hot spot among many bloggers and gourmands, as it offers a ``simple'' version of French luxury-course dishes. French cuisine's ingredients and dishes vary by region, and so the restaurant also offers many significant regional dishes. Cheese and wine are also a major part of cuisine, playing different roles with their many different styles and flavors. The exterior of the restaurant ironically bears the style of a traditional Korea house. The restaurant was remodeled from a ``hanok,'' the Korean traditional accommodation. There is no menu _ just a blackboard with today's lunch and dinner course which changes at the mercy of a chef in accordance with seasonal ingredients. When a customer arrives, the chef pers

Fall Travel Destinations With Ripening Fruits

By Kim Rahn Staff Reporter October is the season of harvest _ everything ripens. Along the theme of ``scenes of new fruits,'' the Korea Tourism Organization introduces four regions great for autumn trips _ Gongju for chestnuts, Miryang for persimmons, Euiseong for apples and Seogwipo for citruses. Jeongan chestnut village The nut that is the most representative of fall in Korea, is the chestnut. Chestnuts are grown across the peninsula, but Gongju in South Chungcheong Province has been famous for this particular nut for a long time, producing more than 12 percent of the nation's total chestnuts. In Gongju, the Jeongan village has the largest chestnut farms with the highest quality chestnuts. Every fall, a chestnut festival is held at several regions in Gongju. Farms in the Jeongan villages start gathering chestnuts in late August, and September and October are the main months of harvest. Visitors will be provided with a sack in which they can fill with about 3 kilograms of chestnuts for 10,000 won. For the chestnut picking experience, it is better

Fall in Love With Autumn

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Savor Stunning Fall Foliage in Korea’s Mountains ``Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower,'' French philosopher Albert Camus once said. While nature offers lush greens and fresh pastel hues during spring, autumn is a season of dramatic reds, oranges and yellows. Autumn always brings some of nature's most stunning scenery. Mountains are covered with brilliant crimson leaves, sharply contrasting with the clear blue skies. The beautiful fall foliage, coupled with the mild weather, is just one of the reasons why many choose to travel around the country during the autumn months. The best places to experience the exquisite colors of the changing autumn leaves are in the mountains. Many go on hiking trips to Korea's numerous mountains during mid-October to early November, when the autumn leaves are at the peak of their color transformations. According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) the peak of autumn leaves will be between mid-October to early November. The peak day is around the time that 80 percent o

Loco Loca: Latin Pizzeria

By Kim Ji-soo Staff Reporter The main street in Itaewon wears much of the same look, even though changes in its culinary scene have overtaken the neighborhood in the past several years or so. But if you take just one step deeper or go just one alley into the back street behind Hamilton Hotel, you can immediately see the changes. The latest addition to the scene is a Latin pizzeria and bistro named Loco Loca. Situated in the alley where Gecko’s and Le Saint-Ex are located, the brightly-walled restaurant offers Latin pizza and several other main dishes. The menu was not elaborate but the essentials were surely there: pizza, appetizers, main dishes and drinks. There was however a wide selection of pizzas and drinks, such as margarita, mojito as well as good old Budweiser. From the appetizer section, we tried the Loco Loca Tabla (14,000 won), a plate akin to the sampler dishes at family restaurants. Four different appetizers nicely occupied each corner of the rectangular tray; cheese-topped nachos, chicken, small calzone and fried cheeseballs. It can serve as a d

Ali Baba Middle Eastern Cuisine

By John Redmond Contributing Writer A rule of thumb when trying out a new restaurant is to look in the window and see how many people are dining there. If the place is crowded with lots of happy, smiling customers, chances are favorable the food is going to be great. This rule doesn’t apply to fast food outlets and the like. But what if the restaurant is located on a floor other than the ground level, which in Seoul is pretty much the norm? Then it’s a case of potluck. Ali Baba, a middle-eastern food restaurant situated on the main street of Itaewon, between the Itaewon Hotel and the Hamilton Hotel is located on the third floor. Specializing in middle-eastern cuisine, the decor is straight out what one would expect to see in a typical ’Indiana Jones’ type movie. Not exactly authentic, but enough dressing to create the illusion of not being in Seoul. In the far right corner, for example, is a large seating area that resembles a parlor, complete with Lebanese style drapes, perfect for larger private function’s. The rest of the dining arrangement consists of tables,

Maritime Epicurism in Autumn

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Autumn is called the season of ``cheongomabi'' in Korea, meaning ``the season of high skies and plump horses.'' But it's not only the appetite of horses that grows; people eat more as well. Autumn is the high time to indulge in the pleasures of seasonal foods, especially, delicacies of the sea. In Korea, autumn is the best season to have ``jeoneo'' (gizzard shads), ``daeha'' (king prawns) and blue crabs, which are most plump around this time of year. According to Taean County, South Chungcheong Province situated along the west sea, this year was a bumper year. Fishing boats were rushing out to sea when September set in after the closed seasons of July and August, and they returned home with their holds full to the brim. Why not hit the ports to enjoy fresh seasonal seafood? Nothing beats sharing and enjoying a seafood feast. Gizzard Shads (Jeoneo) There is an old saying in Korea that the aroma of gizzard shad is so appetizing that it brings back the daughter-in-law that ran away. Another old saying, ``a gizzard shad's head is equivalent to

Fresh Pasta at Rossini

By Sa Eun-young Staff Reporter When looking for a place to eat, a popular cuisine of choice regardless of time, location or company, would have to be Italian. Restaurants catering to Italian cuisine can be found around almost every corner across Seoul, but it’s not often that you find a restaurant that provides high quality dishes that Rossini offers. The picturesque restaurant, which has been serving people for over a decade, attracts pastalovers from near and far. The traditional Italian restaurant has a neat and sophisticated, yet comfortable atmosphere. The brick columns and wooden wine racks lined with wine bottles add the final European touch. If you want a warm-up appetizer before digging into you’re meal, a dish of grilled eggplants with fresh buffalo mozzarella cheese and tomatoes (13,000 won) might do the job. The artistically presented appetizer, with freshly sliced tomato topped with thinly shaved mozzarella cheese and seasoned grilled eggplants, was satisfying, but slightly pricey, considering that there were only five pieces. A must-have at the rest
