Rice Festival in Icheon

Icheon Rice Cultural Festival will be held in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, on Oct. 25 to 28. Icheon is the most famous rice-producing region, and it is said that during the Joseon Kingdom the rice from the region was good enough to be served to the king. Among the various programs available, the highlight is the making of a 600-meter-long ``garaeddok,'' a roll of rice cake, which is enough to serve every visitor. A contest to select the ``master of boiled rice'' will also be held. Judges will evaluate the contestants' rice cooking skills, the process, and finally the taste of the rice. As the name ``Icheon'' is a homonym for the Korean number 2,000, festival organizers will cook 2,000 portions of rice and sell each bowl of rice and other side dishes at 2,000 won. Wine for All Season

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter ``The day you open a '61 Cheval Blanc, that's the special occasion,'' says a woman in ``Sideways,'' a bittersweet comedy film about wine revolving around two guys journeying to the vineyards north of Santa Barbara. In the film, divorced Miles drinks his '61 Cheval Blanc, alone, in a fast-food cafeteria, hiding it wrapped with papers, as he eats a hamburger after hearing that his ex-wife is pregnant, by her new husband. He had hoped to drink it for a reunion with his ex-wife to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. In the film, the wine isn't a luxurious drink consumed in a high-priced restaurant where its vintage is as cherished as the family jewels. Wine becomes special when shared between loved ones, the film says. Wine is Korea's new lover, the love of which is heightened by the popularity of the Japanese comic book, ``Les Gouttes de Dieu'' (``Drops of God''). But its image, for many Koreans, still remains high-end. Several ``wine pojangmachas'' (wine cafes offering cheaper wines) have closed shop whereas trendy wine bar

Chef Emphasizes Originality and Passion

By Kim Tae-jong Staff Reporter Chef is a term simply used to refer to a person who cooks professionally in a kitchen. But the executive chef at the COEX InterContinental Hotel seems to add more characteristics to the traditional definition of his job. ``Presenting yourself is very important. Today, it is essential,'' Paul Schenk said during an interview with The Korea Times. ``If you want to have a successful restaurant or successful business for food and beverages, one of the key components obviously is marketing. A big part of it is marketing the chef and marketing the personality behind the person who cooks.'' He agreed that creativity in cooking is important along with quality meals in the restaurant business. But after reaching a certain level, it is more about selling the food differently, he said. ``With food, these days, it's really difficult to make anything new and different. (A good restaurant) can be creative and innovative, but at the end of the day, it's still food, working with same ingredients and working a little bit differently but selling them very d

Mignon Terrace Serves Belgian Cuisine

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter The first thing that comes to mind when you hear of Belgian cuisine is probably those yummy Belgian waffles and chocolates. Mignon Terrace, located in Itaewon, is a quaint restaurant serving dishes from Belgium and Southern France. The menu, which is written in English and French, features a fairly extensive array of Belgian and French dishes to choose from. The appetizer menu included goat cheese salad, smoked salmon salad, and several dishes featuring mussels. We opted for the mussels in Provencal sauce (14,000 won). While waiting for the dishes, we were served French fries and a basket of bread. When the pot of steaming hot mussels arrived at our table, we were surprised at how big the serving was. The mussels were fresh, and cooked in a light but flavorful tomato-based sauce. While we really liked the mussels, the serving seemed a bit too much for two people. As for the main dish, we decided to go with the house recommendations, Waterzooi of chicken with cream sauce and potatoes (19,000 won) and grilled scallops w
