Hotels present unique packages

By Kim Rahn Many hotels present similar packages ― vacation deals in summer, romantic stays on Valentine’s Day, beauty and spa treatments for women. But some offer a very unique package which other hotels cannot copy easily, taking advantage of their specific facilities or special connection with nearby cultural venues. For those planning small parties, the Novotel Ambassador Gangnam offers the Sweet Memory package. It can be used as a venue for any celebration, such as a proposal for couples, bridal showers or baby showers. The package features a spacious premier suite and party supplies, including colorful balloons, a bottle of rose wine, a cake and candles, and rental of a Polaroid camera for 10 photos. High-speed Internet access and premium Nespresso coffee are also included. The package is priced at 370,000 won excluding tax. For more information, call 02-567-1101. Foreign visitors wanting to experience traditional Korean culture are advised to stay at the Renaissance Seoul Hotel, which will present its Discover Korea Package from September. It features

Access Festa at the Banyan Tree

By Agnes Yu The European bistro and bar Festa is a dining facility within the Banyan Tree compound that has recently opened to the public. Previously only admitting club members or hotel guests, Festa now offers themed promotions to welcome everyone. Guests can enjoy a sophisticated dining experience in a setting that is contemporary with a colonial vibe. Newly appointed food and beverage director Justin Kim says the exquisite food, the impressive cityscape view and quaint architecture combine to create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Seoul. ``We hope to change the image of the Banyan Tree. Before it was too difficult to approach or seemed too exclusive. With the opening of Festa, we hope to invite young professionals, ex-pats and couples to come and appreciate the distinct ambiance,’’ Kim said. The elegant interior of Festa is decorated with cool marble geometric tiles, large block pillars with grooves carved up their length, and a fierce sculpture of a jaguar made of paper that greets guests as they enter. Templestay guide in Daegu

By Do Je-hae When the templestay program was first conceived, it was around the time when Korea co-hosted the 2002 FIFA World Cup with Japan as a way of providing affordable accommodation to foreign visitors. But more importantly, Korea wanted to improve its cultural image in the international community through providing a close experience into the world of Korean Buddhism. Heading into its 10th year, the program has emerged as one of the nation’s most successful tourism activities. At the time of the program’s inception, only 33 temples participated. Now, there are 118 temples around the nation that host templestay visitors, according to the Cultural Corps of Korean Buddhism, an affiliate of the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism. Last year, 20,000 foreign visitors were registered in the program. Since 2002, a total of 500,000 people have completed a templestay. Now, Korea is about to host another major global sporting event that is expected to generate numerous templestay visitors. The forthcoming World Championships in Athletics, to be held in Daegu Aug. 27 to Sept

Imperial Palace chef serves pasta soup

By Kim Rahn You had a heavy drinking session last night. You need something to chase away a hangover, something like a “jjigae” (soup) would be good. But, alas, your lunch appointment is at an Italian restaurant, and the selection of creamy pastas won’t help relieve your stomach. With these thoughts in mind, chef Hugh Lee at the Imperial Palace Hotel’s Italian restaurant Verona developed zuppa pasta. Zuppa means soup in Italian. “Some regular customers, usually the more elderly, wanted pasta with soup, especially when they drank a lot of alcohol the previous night. So I served them pasta with a seafood-based soup and they liked it,” the executive chef for banquets and the Italian restaurant said. Seafood zuppa pasta has a mild-spicy Vongole broth with seafood such as abalone, calamari, king prawn, scallops and clams, along with watercress and dropwort. It is served in a pot on a warmer which keeps the soup hot until the dish is finished. Lee also created beef zuppa pasta which is boiled with beef tenderloin, oyster mushrooms, button mushrooms and arugula. A sesame sa

It has been a real bummer particularly for those who waited all winter to put on swimsuits and enjoy the fun rides at water parks. As the country anticipates improved weather conditions for what’s left of the summer, water parks across the nation hope to attract larger numbers of vacationers to come and experience some of the new rides. By adding state-of-the-art rides and upgrading the quality of amenities, Ocean World at Daemyung Vivaldi Park, Caribbean Bay at Samsung Everland, Seorak Waterpia and Bluecanyon at Pheonix Park are eager to draw visitors. Ocean World The water recreation center, located inside Daemyung Vivaldi Park in Hongcheon, Gangwon Province, has been changing the industry paradigm by introducing a range of revolutionary rides that water park lovers here have never experienced before.
