Korea also has many traditional markets, but it is not easy for foreigners to know which one has the specialties and food they like, which ones have easy access, and which ones are close to other tourist attractions. The Korea Tourism Organization (KTO) has picked 16 markets nationwide, excluding Seoul, for foreigners through an evaluation by tourism experts.Sinpo International Market in Incheon is the first modern-style regular market in the port city. Due to the proximity from Incheon Port International Passenger Terminal, it has had many foreign tourists and merchants. The market holds the Jayu (freedom) Park festival in April, a nearby park with beautiful cherry blossoms in that season; the Sinpo Market festival in September; and the Chinese Day festival in October.Paldalmun (Paldal Gate) Market in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, is Korea’s only market

Everland in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, holds its 30th Everland Rose Festival through June 14, with various programs commemorating the three decades-long annual event. / Courtesy of EverlandEverland celebrates 30th anniversary of rose festivalBy Kim RahnFlower festivals have become ubiquitous in Korea, with almost all municipalities holding one in the spring. But who started such festivals here in the first place? Many believe it was Everland, a theme park in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province. The 30th edition of its annual Everland Rose Festival started last week and runs through June 14.Pioneer of flower festivalsIn 1976, when it opened, Everland planted 3,500 rose trees of 122 kinds. It picked the rose, as surveys showed it was the Koreans’ favorite flower. But the weather and soil in the region was not appropriate for growing roses, so Everland changed the soil in its rose garden and wrapped the rose trees with straws in the winter to prevent them from freezing. Through these efforts, it was finally able to grow 5,000 rose trees of 150 kinds and then launched the rose festival in June

Baristella stands out from coffee shop crowd

Baristella Coffe ShopBy Gemma WardleSeoul has more than its fair share of coffee shops; in fact the city is riddled with them. But most are boring chain stores that sell the same old drinks, which is why Baristella really sets itself apart from the crowd. This super-modern, trendy store is housed over four floors and overlooks the ultra-cool playground in Hongdae. What makes Baristella stand out is the fun dessert-style drinks it specializes in. The Triple Cheese smoothie is a thick, creamy shake that comes with a piece of cheesecake on top. The Cotton Candy Yogurt smoothie is a sweet, tangy blue drink topped with candy floss and sprinkles. For those who do not like dairy drinks, you are sure to enjoy the fresh citrus ade laced with gummy worms. It is a tasty sensation.Along with its cute and tasty drinks, Baristella also serves New Yorkers’ favourite food, bagels, which are baked in the store. It has a huge variety of flavours, including onion, jalapeno, and garlic, and more than 14 different kinds of cream cheese to smother them in. The jalapeno with scallion cream cheese
